Hip-hop hurray!
More and more people are learning dance forms like Salsa and hip-hop just to equip themselves for weddings
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Bollywood has already met English Waltz at various hi-profile weddings this season. And settling for nothing less than a personal choreographer, this wedding season, Salsa, ball room dance and even hip-hop adds new flavour to the Punjabi weddings.

Says Varun from Varun Dance Studio in Sector 6, Panchkula, "Dance has been an integral part of Punjabi weddings. Earlier it was just bhangra and giddha but now we have families who want to learn dance forms like Salsa, especially for a wedding in the family." And mind you, it's not the bride and the groom alone but papa, mummy, bua and mamiji who are equally interested! "We must have choreographed at least 100 weddings this year itself. People are interested to make weddings a colourful affair with a family dance especially the sangeet ceremony, which has a dance item by the whole family," adds Varun.

Is it Bollywood music all the time or do we see something different, "Bollywood is regular and an essential part, but these days there are families who want to try different dance forms. Families have learnt ball-room dancing and Salsa especially for a wedding."

This kind of entertainment doesn't come for free though, "We charge anywhere from Rs 25,000 to 1.5 lakh for choreographing a wedding," says Varun. And what all does it include? "Almost six hours a day of dance practice for six to seven days; background dancers if the family members are less." Well, all good things come at a price!

"The concept of the family-dance is interesting as it adds to the flavour of the moment and at the same time demonstrates the love as well as affection that family members have for each other," says Dr Karan Sud, who is learning Bollywood dancing for his marriage. "Weddings have always been a special occasion in Punjab, but through some spectacular choreography I feel we become stars in our own, small and personal world."

True in a sense, we guess that is why the trend is so popular these days! "A girl from Hyderabad is learning dance from me these days for her wedding," says Vikas, choreographer and proprietor of dance school Rock n Roll in Mohali and Sector 9, Chandigarh. He adds, "Choreography has become quite popular thanks to the television and hi-profile weddings. Middle class families want to make their wedding an affair to remember.”

And it's not only in the region that theme-based dance for a wedding has become a rage, smaller towns like Dehradun and Shimla too have caught up.

success mantra
Brand bargain
Jasmine Singh

From the first look, you wouldn't expect him to talk much. Darpan Kapoor, managing director and co-founder of Kapsons Ltd, Chandigarh, sits upright in the lounge area of the under-construction office in Mohali. Despite being the 'been-there-done-that' man in the business industry, Darpan has ideas that can make a Havard graduate wonder in amazement.

And yes, he begins to talk….the fight for survival that brought him to this pedestal, volley of innovative plans for the future, the daily walk at the Sukhna Lake that reinvigorates him and not to forget, the successful fundas to successful business!

A first-generation entrepreneur, he decided to give his family business of construction a miss. Darpan and his brother Vipin Kapoor gave Chandigarh an insight into fashion by launching garment retailing back in the '80s. From a single store in Sector-17, he has moved on to the franchise for popular international brands, which includes a special segment for youngsters and kids. It doesn't take much for Darpan Kapoor to dish out five mantras that reveal his successful story!

Foresight is important

Darpan firmly believes in a simple idea that everything sells. "You just have to know how to do that without compromising on quality and clientele. When we realised that we were not getting enough customers, we decided to bring in international brands - Puma, US Polo, Wrangler, Lee, Arrow, Indian Terrain, UCB, Tommy Hilfiger et al. Every place has something to say and offer. I go by my instinct and observation. So, if I have to open an outlet, I will study the area, how much is the advancement and what is the scope of fashion. If the place already has banks and an eatery like McDonalds then half of the work is already done. I am planning to open stores in Jammu, Dehradun, Karnal and focusing more on kids as well as footwear fashion. We can bring in a lot of fashion in this sphere as well."

Maintain consistency

Every business takes time to settle down. "I believe in giving it time before searching for results. One has to also know business needs properly. If marketing is the need of hour we do that; if client relationship is something that needs to be strengthened we focus on that. At the same time, I am honest to my customer and serve with consistency. From the time we brought in international brands, the effort has been to showcase latest designs and best brands that are part of global fashion."

Work hard

It is a universal law - there is no substitute for hardwork. "My day starts at 9.30 am and goes up till 9.30 at night with only half-an-hour break in between. I visit various websites, gather information and then go ahead with my inputs - right from dealing with the staff to upgrading the database with new technology. I don't believe in creating chaos at work; it should follow its pace, but diligently."

Take calculated risks

"I understand that every business has its shares of ups and downs. This, however, doesn't bog me down. Any failed effort has a lesson; I learn for the future rather than sulk over it. One has to take calculated risks in business. When we approached international brands, there was a bit of hesitance because these brands were only marketed in metros.”

All about teamwork

Successful business ventures are always a collective effort. In due course of time, I have created business heads in the company who are trained enough to handle customers as well as needs of the market. I trust my team completely and vice-versa. This creates a positive working environment and the end result is a successful venture.

The stage is set
Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts, Patiala, is ready to collaborate with University of West London and Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, UK, for promoting theatre in the region

Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts, Patiala, may be only a few days old but is already thinking ahead and afresh. For a start, it has made grand plans of collaborations with University of West London and Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, one of UK's leading drama schools.

In Chandigarh, Kathryn Mitchell, pro-vice-chancellor of University of West London and Michael Earley, principal and chief executive officer of the Rose Bruford College, talk about their vision on how they plan to make the centre a hub from where they will reach out to all of Punjab. Asserts Kathryn, whose University will be offering graded exams to students between the age group of seven to 18 years, "Performing arts help build confidence, make you more articulate and help integrate children into academics." Nods Michael, whose college will be providing certificate courses in different aspects of theatre, including backstage and playwriting, "We will be teaching skills that one needs to achieve success."

And are they aware of the hiccups and the obstacles en route? Indeed, they understand that theatre isn't very high on people's agenda here, least of all at the curriculum level! But as they are busy approaching schools, they have received an encouraging response from schools like YPS Mohali and Vivek High-38. Laughs Michael, "Anyway, the people in Punjab are so theatrical." Already a witness to a couple of plays at Patiala, he is bowled over by the energy and verve of young performers in particular.

Yes, he admits he knows very little about contemporary Indian theatre. Back home in UK, the college has a big research centre, which includes many films on Kathakali, but nothing on modern Indian theatre. So to begin with he will focus on the technical needs of both professional and amateur performers. Part of their job will be to learn what is happening here, as he has no intentions of transposing western techniques of theatre on Punjab. "The whole idea is to understand the impulses of Punjabis, their roots and then create performances as well as the needed modules of learning. The crux, no doubt, will be on indigenous productions."

He is already thinking of directing the bubbly Manpal Tiwana, creative director of the Harpal Tiwana Centre, in Chekov's play "Uncle Vanya". "Don't worry, we will find a Punjabi equivalent for Uncle," he quips.

Kathryn, whose university has already tasted Indian waters in the South, too is aware of the cultural needs and plans to have at one least one exam performance in students' own languages. She adds, "We are not nervous at all. We are used to working in different environments and are fully aware of the hurdles in education." Assisted by Luna Sidhu, Director of Development, University of West London, who also happens to be Manpal Tiwana's sister, they are determined to make things work. Though the specifics - the fees structure and other modalities - will come into play by the spring of year 2012 the ball for sure has been set rolling. How and when their efforts of creating the world stage for Punjabis would bear fruit, however, remains to be seen.

Winds of change

Michael Earley, who is also professor of drama, reminds that doing theatre in UK too isn't a cakewalk, more so with cuts in funding. Still he informs that a lot of theatre is happening in the UK; a whole range of it, from Shakespearean dramas to text and movement-based. Besides, in the recent past, he says, "Many women writers have emerged." In Punjab, incidentally, he intends to lay special emphasis on play-writing.

Ranveer the rapper

Actor Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma came to promote their film Ladies vs Ricky Bahl on Kaun Banega Crorepati. He showed off his rap style with an impromptu cool number and rapped his ode on the grand finale for Amitabh Bachchan.

Figuring it out

Teen star Miley Cyrus is fighting back criticism about her body shape saying she loves herself. The former Hannah Montana actress said she is tired of gossip bloggers speculating over her apparent weight gain after she was spotted with a more rounded figure recently reported a website.

The 18-year-old has taken to Twitter to address the comments, posting a photo of an emaciated model and writing, “By calling girls like me fat, this is what you’re doing to other people.” Cyrus also shared a snap of actress Marilyn Monroe with the caption, “Proof that you can be adored by thousands of men even when your thighs touch.” “I love myself & if you could say the same. I don’t want to be shaped like a girl, I love being shaped like a woman & trust me ladies your man won’t mind either (sic),” Cyrus added. —PTI

The oldest and the boldest

Bollywood’s ‘serial kisser’ Emraan Hashmi feels that veteran actor and co-star Naseeruddin Shah has got bolder and dirtier in their upcoming film The Dirty Picture, inspired by late Southern sex siren Silk Smitha’s life.

“As far as the bold quotient goes...I am doing my own bold stuff but Naseer is the boldest in the film. I think he has taken my entire mantle in the film and he is doing what I use to normally do in films,” Emraan, who earned the ‘serial kisser’ tag after Anurag Basu’s Murder, said.

On scenes with the senior actor, Hashmi said, “We had two-three short scenes..there is a premiere and party shots but not many. They cross paths as they are in the same industry. Naseer is an actor, Tusshar is a struggling writer, Vidya is an actress. As you are being part of the same industry so you end up meeting people.” The Milan Luthria-directed movie sees Emraan essaying the role of a director. The actor claims that the film would have been incomplete without casting him.

“Everyone...everything is dirty in this film. It is the dirtiest film I have done. You cannot make a dirty picture without Emraan Hashmi,” he said. The Dirty Picture is inspired by sex icon Vijaylakshmi better known as Silk Smitha. The film shows the highs and lows of an actress-dancing star. “The tone of the film is bold and provocative. But it does not cross the line into vulgarity.. Vulgarity is always subjective.” —PTI

Nothing Fabric-ated!
Khadi, once a poor man's cloth, is now a fabric that spells style
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Khadi—a garment that was once created for self-reliance—is now a chic, hi-profile fabric that signifies style. It's now a fabric that is spinning the world of fashion around it. And since the weather is changing, a slight nip in the air increases the demand for this garment as it is neither too warm nor lets the air seep in!

"Khadi has definitely developed over the years. From a raw fabric thought fit for the poor, people have now realised that this is a fabric for those who can pay, care about their skin and are conscious about eco-friendly products," says Param Thakur from Khadi Plus, a showroom in Sector 17 as well as 22. A man who changed the look of the fabric with his brand Khadi Plus, he adds, "Now, khadi is associated with health. It is a skin-friendly.”

Talk about designs and Poonam Thakur, academic head, NIFT, Mohali says, "We have wonderful designs in khadi—from spaghetti tops to kurtis and pajamas, we have bright and varied works on the fabric; latest being hand-embroidery. Believe me, it's not the usual adda embroidery. It is an intricate work done with dexterity." She says, "Suddenly khadi is riding high on the fashion meter and it has become a brand for the intellectual class. From a garment of autonomy it has turned to a modish piece of clothing.”

Khadi has made it to the ramp as well. Remember Lakme Fashion Week 2010, where designer Soumitra Mandal presented this fabric in a new identity and won accolades.

Talk about the fabric as well as pricing and Param says, "Khadi is not just a fabric, it's an art. An art is always expensive. Plus the cotton prices have risen over the years and that too adds to the price. It is also a hand-woven fabric and anything that requires manual labour costs high."

Talking about trends, Ritu Kochar, director, corporate, INIFD-8, says "A lot of people are promoting and experimenting with khadi these days. No doubt khadi has really improved over time and nowadays we find a lot of options in this fabric. For men we have smart coats to trousers while for women, there are long skirts, kurtis and even tops in khadi."

Celeb point
Tried and tested
Divya Dutta

Today was a day of trials. Dress trials, I mean. Three different films and all three decided to have their dress trial on the same day. One of them wanted a proper photoshoot. This is something I had never done before. I got up early. Photoshoots can be exciting but you have to do full tayyari! And, as we say in my show on Sony max, "Hum tayyar hain."

I went for a jog on the beach early morning. I have already lost 3kg in the past ten days and very happy with the new look and the curves! Badi mehnat aur will power ka kaam hai but once you get on to it, the result is beautiful.

So after jog and gym, my staff came home-make-up man, hairdresser and my designer. It's a high to try out a new look for a film. Like a painting! Creating something new, with colours and hues and designs but the canvas is the actor, who is about to get into a new role.

As we got the make-up done and then the hair style, and finally my designer draped me into the new clothes. And as I looked into the mirror, it was a different person I saw. Not Divya. And that excited me and my team. I am lucky to be working on diverse projects. There are lots to play on.

As the photographer clicked me, my Divya attitude changed to the character. And the whole atmosphere became different. Nothing existed in front of me but for the camera and me flirting with it.

As we finished shoot, I quickly changed into my clothes to get ready for the next film. "Look," my designer said, "Now Divya is back!"

Yes, I wondered, "What a lovely profession. The childhood fantasy of being a princess or a doctor or play ghar ghar! I am still playing these varied roles. And I promise you I am playing them very professionally.

GET PHYSICAL
Flexible approach
Jassi oberoi

We can be happy, healthy and cheerful when we live as per the laws of nature. We face physical and mental tensions and diseases when we go against it. When we are in sync with nature our physical and mental energy enhances, which gives the power to understand the human brain and that inspires us to adopt a better lifestyle. Yogic practices are based around nature and thus names of different asanas too are derived from it, Mayura asana — the peacock pose and Gomukh asana— the cow head pose to name a few.

Today, we talk about the nuances of advanced halasana.

Halasana

Hal means plough. The body takes the form of a plough in halasana. Lie down on the mat, spread on the floor straight on your back. Keep both arms straight by your side. Breathe out while keeping your legs together. Now, keep both your legs straight. Take both of your legs up together and then gradually to the backside of the head so that the tips of your toes touch the floor. Go a little further. By doing this your hips and back will come above your head. Keep both legs straight and firm. Touch the chest with your skin properly. In this way your chin will get fixed to the cavity of your throat.

Now, slowly fold your legs and bring you knees near your head. In the final position, both of your hands and feet will be resting on the floor completely. This asana can be done starting from three minutes and gradually increase up to twenty minutes. Then come back to the same position in the same manner but very slowly and with no jerks what so ever. This asana should be done slowly and never in a hurry. By practicing it daily, the body will become flexible and you can achieve the desired pose. Remember the legs should be taken down the same way as they were raised.

The practice of this asana makes our spinal cord flexible and can open to three inches. It also makes the liver function better and helps the respiratory system and thyroid gland to function better. Sperm disorder is cured from the roots while the blood circulation too is rejuvenated. It is ideal for those who want to reduce fat around the stomach. But remember one should only push the body till one can do it comfortably, pushing it further slowly. It is not advised for pregnant women and for those suffering from high blood pressure or any heart ailment.

Yogic tip: It is a common fact that a morning walk is extremely beneficial but remember to keep quiet and keep your mouth closed, inhaling rhythmically through the nostrils to get the true benefit of fresh air.

Virtual loveline

People flock online dating sites in search of a partner, who has all the ideal traits they desire in a mate. But when they actually end up meeting a potential dating partner, those romantic preferences are likely to fall by the wayside, according to new research from Northwestern University and Texas A and M University.

People liked potential partners that matched their ideals more than those that mismatched their ideals when they examined written descriptions of potential partners, but those same ideals didn't matter once they actually met in person, according to a new study by psychologists Paul W. Eastwick, Eli J. Finkel and Alice H. Eagly.

"People have ideas about the abstract qualities they're looking for in a romantic partner," said Eastwick, lead author of the study.

"But once you actually meet somebody face to face, those ideal preferences for traits tend to be quite flexible." According to Finkel, co-author of the study, the idea is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

"People are not simply the average of their traits," he said.

"Knowing that somebody is persistent, ambitious and sexy does not tell you what that person is actually like. It doesn't make sense for us to search for partners that way." So those seeking prospective partners, don't be surprised if you end up ignoring your preconceived notions about what would make an ideal mate.

"Based on those ideals, you might end up liking a person upon meeting face to face, or you might have the opposite reaction," Finkel said.

road rage
Door to happiness
Mukesh Kharbanda

What is the criterion one considers while buying a luxurious new car for himself? Driving pleasure? Engine capability? Speed? Seductive looks? Exclusivity? Brand Value?

Have you ever thought one could choose a car on the basis of its scissors? It's butterflies? Or, even its suicidal capabilities?

Wondering what I am talking about? So, finally, after a series of question marks, let me now open the door of answers for you. We are discussing the various types of car doors in here. Yes, scissors, butterfly, suicide, gull-wing - all are different types of non-conventional doors.

Be it the scissor doors, the Lamborghini trademark, the ones that rotate vertically upward, and are hinged at or near the end of the windshield or butterfly doors, hinged at the top of the door and open up and outward, or be it suicide doors that are hinged at its trailing edge, or gull-wing doors, seen in many Mercedes models, that are hinged to the roof rather than by the side, or canopy doors, named after their resemblance to the aircraft canopy, that sits on top of a car and lifts up in some way, to provide access for passengers, all have taken the car lovers by a storm in the eras they were launched.

Let us take a brief look at some of the most interesting type of car doors and the cars that made them popular among the car rangers.

Scissor doors were a Lamborghini trademark and were introduced in The Lamborghini Countach in 1974 designed by Marcello Gandini of the Bertone design studio, the same designer and studio that designed the Lamborghini Miura in 1966. The Countach's styling and amazing impression made it an icon of great looks in the era. The superior performance characteristics of later Lamborghini models like Diablo and Murcielago were much appreciated by the analysts and engineers but the originality of outrageousness in Countach remained its distinction.

The term suicide door was coined due to the potential for the door to fly open should the latch be released during forward motion of the vehicle. They were especially popular in the gangster era of the 1930s. In the words of once editor of Hemmings Motor News Magazine, Dave Brownell, "It's a lot easier to shove somebody out with the wind holding the door open."

Butterfly doors resemble scissor doors in the make. While opening, they also move outward along with upward unlike scissor doors, and makes for easier entry or exit. These doors have been an adopted design of closed top sports car racers.

Gull-wing doors evoke the image of seagull's wings, hence, the name. These were pioneered by the 1952 Mercedes Benz 300 SL race car. Apart from the Mercedes Benz 300 SL and the experimental Mercedes Benz C111 of the early 1970s, the best-known examples of road-cars with gull-wing doors are the Bricklin SV-1 from the 1970s and the DeLorean from the 1980s.

Canopy doors are seldom used on the production cars. They have created a buzz on some of the famous concept cars. There are no set rules to canopies, so they can be hinged at the front, side, or back.

Although most of us might never be able to own a non-conventional door vehicle, but still, the thrill of knowing them is immeasurable. And off course, this can be rage among the ones fond of modifications in the times to come.

Kashmira playing a cupid?
Kashmera Shah
Love guru: Kashmera Shah

Kashmira Shah is back on television. But this time she's more angelic than controversial. The VJ-actor is playing a cupid for Channel V's show Steal Ur Girlfriend. We caught up with the item girl to speak more about the show.

What made you choose this show? Kashmira smiles and says, "It's a brilliant concept. The moment I got the offer, I knew I had to do it. It's first show where you will see people calling off their relationship. A lot of times, we break-up or call off our marriage because we are in love with someone else. I don't think it's bad to settle for someone you love and desire more. Even I did so. If you saw a recent episode, you would have seen how much the guy loved the other girl more than his present girlfriend so was the girl. So sometimes, you just have to do such things and find someone better."

It must be exciting to play love guru. She laughs. "It feels great. I have played the love guru in my personal life many times to friends. But I never thought that it would become my profession one day. Even I had so many ups and downs in my relationship but that doesn't mean that we lost faith in ourselves or gave up. It was the true love that kept us going. Love, anyhow, survives in the end."

Have you ever played cupid in personal life before? "I played cupid so many times to so many people in personal life. But none of the people, you may know. However, there is one superstar I had worked with. I played cupid when he loved some other more than his present girlfriend. He broke up and now, he's very happy with her.” — HRM

As the track of Lord Krishna is currently on, romance has been replaced with loads of gyaan from Radhika aka Lord Krishna. But perhaps he is finding solace in the fact that the TRPs are better.

Rati Pandey Rati discovers Delhi

While shooting Zee TV's Hitler Didi, the cast and crew, especially Rati Pandey discovered a new side of Delhi - the generous spirit of Delhities, mainly the residents of the famous Chandni Chowk, where they shot for most part. They all ate dum biryani and kebabs. No wonder they all keep praising their Delhi experience non-stop.

If your birthday is November 16...

Your birth on the 16th day of this month advises you to look outside your team, department or even your field, for wisdom. You'll want to vary the structure of your days and your evenings, too; a mixture of independent work, team effort and healthy downtime is a key now. You are introspective and a little stubborn. Because of this, it may not be easy for you to maintain permanent relationships, but you probably will as you are very much into home and family. Your interests vary from technical to scientific to religious. You may be emotional, but have a hard time expressing these emotions. Because of this, there may be some difficulty in giving or receiving affection. You'll be coherent and will be decisive when dealing with all problems. Something will irritate those born in the first decade; this could be humdrum routine or a need for change. The stars recommend a little patience. Mood: Happy all the year round. Compatible signs: Cancer and Leo. Lucky colours: Cream and blue. Lucky days: Tuesday and Wednesday. Lucky numbers: 9, 14, 22, 54, 55. Lucky gem: Pearl. Lucky flower: Apple blossom.
