Abir concocted Rs 8-lakh robbery
Chandigarh, November 15

The Rs 8 lakh daylight gunpoint robbery that rocked the city on November 12 turned out to be a story cooked up by 26 year-old Abir Malhotra who had invested the money belonging to his sister.

Father strangles 3-yr-old daughter, arrested
Panchkula, November 15
The accused being taken for medical examination at Panchkula on Monday. In a gruesome incident, Dhanna Ram, a resident of Indra Colony, murdered his three-year-old daughter in the wee hours of this morning.

The secretary of the SBOP Employees Cooperative USE Thrift and Credit Society has been sentenced to a two-year jail term for non-compliance of the orders of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum. 

Chhat Bir Zoo loses a lion
Zirakpur, November 15
Gagan, a two-and-a-half-year-old Asiatic lion, died at Chhat Bir Zoological Park this morning. The lion was acquired from Rajkot Zoo in Gujarat on March 6 along with a lioness.

It’s final — Those registered after Nov 1 can’t vote
Chandigarh, November 15
Voters registered after November 1, 2011, will not be allowed to cast their vote in the coming Municipal Corporation (MC) elections. The issue was today clarified by the UT election department following a three-page reply received from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

UT Admn falls behind in census compilation again
Chandigarh, November 15
Once again the UT Administration has failed to meet the deadline to complete the caste and religion-based census. A technical snag that developed in a specially designed software (supervisory module) for reviewing the locked/left out houses to prepare the final report of the caste census, is said to be the reason for the delay.

Saudamini Bambah cremated
Chandigarh, November 15
Prof Saudamini Bambah, Florence Nightingale of Panjab University (PU), was cremated at electric crematorium, Sector 25, here today. Wife of Prof RP Bambah, former Vice-Chancellor of PU and former Trustee of The Tribune Trust, she left for her heavenly abode yesterday after a brief illness, leaving behind a void which would be difficult to fill.

A meeting for cancer patients, suffering from chronic myeloid leukaemia (most common blood cancer among adults), was organised under the aegis of MAX Foundation at Bhargava auditorium, PGI, yesterday. More than 1,000 patients interacted with experts from across the country.

Narco test on victim’s friend soon
Chandigarh, November 15 The Chandigarh Police will conduct a narco-analysis test on Kanika in the Neha murder case. Neha’s close friend Kanika gave her consent for the test at the district courts to help the police crack the case. Neha was brutally murdered near Sector 38 on July 30, 2010. The court has issued directions to the UT police to decide the schedule for the test.

Traffic advisory for Advani’s yatra
Chandigarh, November 15
Owing to Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader LK Advani’s yatra, the traffic will remain affected from 5.15 pm to 6.15 pm on the Zirakpur-Tribune Chowk road on Wednesday. The Chandigarh Police has requested general public to either avoid the route at this time or use alternative routes.

Now, ‘easy bill’ for consumers’ convenience

As the earlier scheme “Payment on your doorstep” of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited has failed to take off, the authorities concerned have now launched another concept “Easy bill” for the convenience of power consumers. Under the new plan, consumers can now pay their electricity bills at shops authorised by the power corporation authorities in various sectors. The shopkeepers authorised to collect power bills will receive payments only in cash and up to Rs 5,000.

Gang of robbers busted, 3 held

With the arrest of three persons, the CIA Kharar today claimed to have busted a gang of robbers that were involved in several cases of robbery and snatching in Zirakpur and Mohali. The police has confiscated gold and silver articles, cash worth Rs 1 lakh, along with an Indica car from them.

A fire broke out in a spare part shop at the GT road, Sirhind, last night and shop owner claimed that goods worth Rs 40 lakh was gutted in the fire. The watchman spotted the fire and informed the police, which in turn called the owner and began rescue operations, but unfortunately fire tenders of the Municipal Council, Sirhind, reached the spot after two hours and by that time the goods had been destroyed.

No quota for those born without disability after Freedom: High Court
Chandigarh, November 15
In what may signify the beginning of an end of quota for the dependents of freedom fighters, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that such reservation may be against equality before law, if they are born without disability in free India. The direction by a High Court Division Bench came on a petition filed by Darshan Singh, challenging a condition in the brochure for allotment of plots in Eco-City being developed by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority.

It’s one judge less for the Punjab and Haryana High Court. More than five years after he was elevated to the Bench, Justice Ajai Lamba has been transferred out. Available information suggests his transfer orders were received at the High Court this evening.

Dowry case: Major surrenders, sent to 5-day police remand

After the Supreme Court dismissed the anticipatory bail application filed by an Army Major in a dowry case, Major Arshad Zeeshan Siddiqui surrendered before a local court today. The officer is currently posted at the Dinjan- based 38, Independent Reconnaissance and Observation Flight of the Army Aviation Corps.
