Cabinet opens doors for dentists’ promotions
Dehradun, November 8 With non-existent promotional avenues, the government was unable to attract bright medical interns. The dentists in the past were denied promotions on one excuse or the other, foremost being that a separate cadre and seniority list did not exist. Now with the latest decision, the strength of the government dentists will increase from 78 to 105 and 22 senior dentists, 15 consultant surgeons and 5 joint directors are expected to be promoted. Since the creation of the state, no dentist was considered for promotion. Even departmental promotion committees were also formed thrice but dentists were, however, kept out of the purview. In all, there are 78 dental surgeons in the state. Besides the dentists were also kept out of the framework of the Tickoo Commission recommendations and were not even entitled for grade pay. “Though our demand for raising the strength of dentists in the state has not been fully taken up, the long-pending demand of promotions, has, however, been addressed,” said Joint Director (Dental) JDS Rana. Earlier citing financial reasons, the Finance Department had shot down the Health Department’s proposal to constitute a dental structure requiring at least 152 dentists who could have been deputed at Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres and District Hospitals in the state. |
‘Shankar guitar’ exponent full of modesty
Dehradun, November 8 The first woman exponent of the Hindustani classical guitar humbly gives credit to Bhushan Datt Sharma for his craftsmanship and helping her gain the tonal quality best suited for Hindustan classical music and her kind of music. “The Shankar guitar that I play would not have taken shape but for Bhushan Datt Sharma’s craftsmanship. He moulded the Hawaiian guitar according to my requirement. I would always be indebted to him for giving shape to an instrument that suits my temperament. The tonal quality of the six-stringed guitar seemed too high pitched for my kind of music so it had to be crafted into a four-stringed instrument for improving tonal quality. The Shankar guitar contains a total of 18 strings,” said Kamala Shankar, while speaking with The Tribune today. She was in Doon to participate in a concert organised by SPICMACAY. A South Indian but well versed in the tradition of the Benares gharana where she spent the early part of her life, Dr Kamala Shankar’s foray into music and later guitar playing too speaks volumes about the influences of Varanasi. “I picked up the guitar solely due to the overwhelming presence of the Bengali musicians who were well versed in the Hawaiian guitar. But, my mother wanted us to follow the rigours of music school so began my learning under the tutelage of Pandit Chanulal Sharma and Pandit Bimalendu Mukhopadhay,” said Kamala. Though settled in New Delhi, every year Dr Kamala travels to Varanasi to pay tribute to MS Subhalaxmi in whose honour the concert is organised. “The Shankar Arts Foundation has been set up to promote young classical Hindustani guitarists and provide them a platform to showcase their talent,” she added. She performed at KV Hatibarkala and Hindu National Inter-college here today. Accompanying her on the tabla were Subhendu Das and on the Hawaiian guitar her student Nirmal Saini. The alumni association of Benaras Hindu University also felicitated the artiste who had passed out from the prestigious university. |
