Clock Tower row resurfaces in Mussoorie
Dehradun, November 2 As soon as traders came to know about such letter, they shut down their shops and blocked the road at the Clock Tower site in protest against such arbitrary decision of the MC and demanded an explanation on the letter written by the MC to the contractor. The contractor Manohar Lal also arrived at the scene and explained that he was not starting the work as he had not been paid for his previous dues of the Clock Tower demolition as yet and he would not re-construct the clock tower without entering into any formal written agreement. He also said the MC was harassing him by demanding justification for the increase in the amount from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 75 lakh which he had already submitted. In addition to that, a fresh letter directing him to stop the work of digging the foundation had been served showing the nefarious intentions of the council. Disgusted Manohar Lal said he was no more interested in the construction work and was willing to stay away if such conditions prevailed. The annoyed traders raised slogans against MC president OP Uniyal and blocked the road for several hours. The road blockade was removed after the police intervention later. OP Uniyal also arrived at the spot and while giving a clarification on the letter issued yesterday, said that as the site posed a serious threat to pedestrians and commuters, the letter addressed to the contractor was written to fill up the dug-up land with mud till the time the construction work did not begin and not to stop the construction work. The traders were not convinced with the argument and remained adamant at starting the tendering process, afresh for the Clock Tower re-construction. Gauzing the anger of the traders, OP Uniyal and Executive Officer Rohitash Sharma acceded to the demand of re-tender of the project in front of the traders but later retracted from his words. Later speaking to The Tribune, he said that no re-tendering process would be started again as demanded by the traders. He also said that misunderstanding arose after the fresh letter was issued to the contractor in which the MC had demanded from the contractor to fill up the dug up hole near the clock tower construction site. OP Uniyal reiterated that the documents seeking justification for the increase in the amount from Rs 50 to Rs 75 lakh had been sent to the PWD today and there will be no change in the earlier tender issued by the MC. Many residents in the town believe that as MC is in the dock over the issue and in the wake of fresh Public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the High Court a few days back, the MC was compelled to act in such a manner as they had to tender satisfactory reply to the High Court on the next hearing scheduled for November 20. |
