Youth drowned in canal: Nepali youth Prabhu Giri ( 36) was drowned while performing ‘Chhath puja’ in a canal on Pataudi road here on Tuesday. Divers and men of the Fire Brigade had not been able to fish out the body till the filing of this report.Man robbed of pension: Two motorcycle-borne miscreants looted Rs 6800 from Balbir Singh of Juddi village, near Kosli, on the Nahar- Juddi pathway on Tuesday.
The incident took place when Balbir, who had withdrawn his pension from the Nahar branch of the PNB, was returning home. The police has registered a case of assault and theft. Sirsa
Narcotic dealer arrested: The police on Wednesday arrested a Rajasthan-based narcotic dealer, Mahabir, who used to supply poppy husk to local traffickers. The accused told the police that he had purchased poppy husk from Vijender, a resident of Mehrana Dhani of Sherpura Punjab, who operated in Matili in Rajasthan. A local court sent the accused in police custody for two days for recovery of his Scorpio vehicle used in the crime.

The chargesheet against Mohammad Afzal, a former PWD executive engineer, was filed yesterday in
the court of Special Judge (Anti-Corruption).

Cambodian team in city: A nine-member Cambodian delegation envisaged keen interest in the bamboo products, grass and natural fiber. The delegation also visited the Uttarakhand Bamboo Development Board. Dr Rekha Pai, Programme Director, provided information to the members on various aspects of bamboo and other natural fibres that are available in Uttarakhand in abundance. Neek Naron, member of Cambodian, delegation said similar kind of fibres were found in Cambodia and both Cambodia and Uttarakhand could learn from each other’s experiences. The members also showed interest in the community forestry. Notice issued in assault case: The Uttarakhand Congress Disciplinary Committee has issued a show cause notice to Dehradun Mahanagar Congress President Harish Virmani over the alleged incident of assault at the state Congress Headquarters on September 23. A notice was issued at a meeting of the committee, chaired by former minister Narendra Singh Bhandari. The meeting also directed the party workers to abstain from taking law into their
hands. 2 killed, 18 injured in accident:
Two residents of Pune were killed and 18 others were injured when a bus in which they were travelling collided with a tree on Wednesday in Nainital. According to Kunal Sharma, Commissioner, Kumaon Division, the tourists were on the way to Haridwar from the Jim Corbett National Park in
Ramnagar.

Drive planned to dispose of pending legal cases: The Almora administration has called for the initiation of a special summoning drive to dispose of long-pending legal cases. Speaking at an official meeting held on Tuesday afternoon, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Rajiv Shah underlined the need to deal with matters pertaining to crimes against women on a priority basis. He said strict action would be taken against the Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars if they failed to deliver with reference to the crime register of their respective areas. The ADM has also underlined that action will also be taken against officials, including SDMs, if they do not take matters seriously. Campaign against poly bags:
Almora District Magistrate DS Garbyal has asked the district administration and the Municipal Council to launch a drive against the use of polythene bags. He has also made an appeal to people not to make the use of polythene bags and use paper and cloth bags to protect the environment. He said since polythene could not be completely destroyed, it was harmful both for human beings and animals. He also asked shopkeepers to come forward to make this mission a success. Garbyal underlined that the exercise could only become a success if the people and the shopkeepers became equal participants in it. Illegal miners to face action:
District Magistrate, Udham Singh Nagar, PS Jangpangi has made it clear that strict action would be taken against those involved in illegal mining and the transportation of mined material in the district. At a meeting of the Kisan Bandhu in Rudrapur on Wednesday, he said efforts were on to bring into effect a proper mining policy. He said those involved in illegal mining and those allowing it on their land would be penalised. Jangpangi said the registration of vehicles involved in such activity would also be cancelled. Engineer killed in mishap:
An engineer employed at a paper mill in Lal Kuan was killed when he was reportedly hit by a crane. The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Chawla (22) of Haryana. He, along with one of his colleagues, was going to buy a safety helmet when the duo was hit by the crane from behind. They were taken to a public health centre, where Chawla succumbed to his injuries. Girl who had consumed poison dies:
A girl who had been battling for her life for the past one week after having allegedly consumed poison died in a hospital in Haldwani. According to information, 17-year-old Meena of the Malla Ramgarh area of Nainital district had allegedly consumed poison after having been scolded at home. She had been residing with her paternal aunt.
