Jaundice strikes rama mandi, two die
Jalandhar, October 29 Baba Budha Ji Nagar in the area is the worst hit locality in Rama Mandi. Both the deceased - Ajit Singh (53) and Manjinder Singh (30) belong to gali no. 2 of Baba Budha Ji Nagar. While the district health authorities and MC teams speeded up work at the area after the two deaths, residents say they never saw MC or health officials taking interest in the area earlier, despite regular complaints by them. Residents have plenty of problems. The sewers in the locality are choked and the sewage water spills on to the roads. Residents allege the water from the sewers is mixing into clean drinking water, causing diseases. Garbage in open plots and streets is not removed regularly. At the very entrance of the area is a settlement of labourers, living here for the past 70 to 80 years. They collect and burn garbage. About 35 marla plot that they live in is stacked with sacks stuffed with garbage. When asked, what if the MC employees see them working with so much garbage posing a risk to residents’ health, Bitto, an 80-year-old woman labourer retorts, “Let them come and see what is life for poor people like us. How else do we earn our livelihood?” Residents allege bio-medical waste carelessly dumped by a nearby private hospital is also a constant threat. Salakhan Singh, a resident of the first house in gali no. 2, has two patients in his own home. “My son is down with jaundice and I am not too well either. These labourers burn garbage every second day and it gives out a very bad smell, making our lives difficult. There are black soot particles in the air for many days after they burn it and to add to it all, the streets lie inundated with water,” he said. Bhupinder Singh, a resident of the area and brother of deceased Ajit Singh, said, “The corporation has come to us with tablets after the outbreak of jaundice. Where were they earlier?” Another resident Kulwinder Singh said, “The area is so dirty. Even the body of one of the deceased had to be taken to his house over puddles of water accumulated at their house entrance. They hand over those tablets to us but there are no instructions on how to use them. We have put the tablets in water, they don’t even dissolve.” Residents also allege the water samples were taken today, after the water and sewers were cleaned. The samples should have been taken before the water was chlorinated or the sewers cleaned, they say. While official stats put the number of patients at 28, residents say there are over 50 patients. Except jaundice, fever patients with low platelet cell counts are also in plenty in the area. Salakhan Singh, Bhupinder Singh and many other patients say they suffer from low platelet counts, but health officials maintain it is mostly jaundice cases. Jaundice cases also present in the neighbouring Ekta Nagar locality, says residents. Grave matter l
Both the deceased belonged to Budha Ji Nagar locality l The area affected by the outbreak has a total population of 2,380. l Health teams survey 510 houses in Baba Budha Ji Nagar locality and Bansan Wali Gali l Found 28 jaundice cases, two diarrhoea and two fever cases, all of which are being treated at private hospitals l 13,000 tablets of chlorine distributed, four water samples taken l Area residents say things have been ignored for decades |

The protest continued for over an hour. They demanded immediate issuance of the merit list for the appointment of 5,000 linemen in Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). The strong protest in front of the main gate of the palace forced the authorities to use alternate gate to exit Badal to take him to Kala Sanghia where another sangat darshan programme was to be held. The protesting linemen, led by their district president Paramjit Singh Ghumtala, raised slogans against Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP Government for not fulfilling their demand despite assurance. Quacks mushrooming in city, authorities keep eyes shut
Jalandhar October 29 The authorities seemed to have turned a blind eye to this menace. There are incalculable numbers of quacks (dentists, orthopedics, ear cleansers) operating in and around the city and villages. Quacks, who call themselves ‘danto ke doctor’, have set up their temporary clinics near Nakodar Chowk and on Sodal road near Sodal Mandir. A quack, who has set up his clinic near a garbage dump near Nakodar Chowk, is quite popular with residents. Similarly, there were numbers of quacks especially “orthopedics” operating in Nakodar, Shahkot and in adjoining villages. Most of the “patients”, who visit these quacks are poor and uneducated. District Health Officer (DHO) RL Bassan said the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of the civil hospital has the authority to take action against quacks in towns and the drug inspector has the duty to initiate action against these illegal medical practitioners. He said, “The health department has been maintaining strict vigil. We also conduct raids from time to time.” Few months back, the department booked a quack in Basti Gujan area here. The DHO also appealed to people not to go to these quacks for treatment. The Jalandhar Civil Surgeon, HK Singla, said their department has always taken timely action when someone files a complaint against these alleged quacks. Otherwise, a drug inspector has been authorised to conduct timely raids to nab quacks. Rajesh Soori, Drug Inspector, Jalandhar, expressed concern over rising menace of quacks and said medical officer of the area concerned was responsible for taking action against quacks. Sanjeev Sharma, former president of the Medical Association, Jalandhar, said they had always urged residents to stop going to quacks. He said there was a dire need to start anti-quackery campaign. |
