Kalka mail derailment leaves thousands struck at
stations
Jalandhar, October 28 Sources in the Railways said rail traffic, heading towards Delhi, was diverted from Ambala towards Saharnpur-Samli route. The Amritsar and Jammu-bound trains were asked to take Jakhal-Kurukshetra route. The authorities said the trains on the Delhi-Amritsar and Delhi-Jammu routes were running late by an hour-and-a-half to 10 hours; Delhi-Pathankot trains were running late by three-and-a-half hours; Dadar Express by six hours, Jansewa Express by 10 hours, Shan-e-Punjab by four hours; Swaran Shatabdi by 5.15 hours; Pashchim Express by 1.30 hours. Other trains, running on the Ludhiana-Amritsar and the Ludhiana-Jammu and Pathankot tracks were, however, on time but overloaded. Hundreds of businessmen, who daily commute between Jalandhar-Delhi, Amritsar-Delhi stations and vice-verse, were the most affected. Many of them had to cancel their advance booked tickets on the eleventh hour and opt for superfast long-route buses to reach their destinations on time. Some even preferred to hire taxis and many cancelled their important business meetings, claimed Monti Sehgal, a local trader. Members of a city-based sports team were disappointed as their train to Delhi got delayed by hours. The team was to catch a train from Delhi for Goa to participate a tournament. “We reached the railway station almost two hours ago to catch the Amritsar-Delhi Express. We are in a hurry and now have to take a bus to reach Delhi,” claimed Harpreet Kaur, who along with her husband, was on their way to Delhi to attend a marriage party. In the wake of heavy rush at railway stations, the Government Railway police and the city police jointly pressed personnel in to service at the stations. For public convenience, lists of trains arriving late were displayed at the enquiry counter. |
Mad rush as DTO counters open after
a week
Jalandhar, October 28
The office was closed on October 22 and 23 on account of weekend. There was no public dealing on Monday and Tuesday owing to strike by the ministerial staff. The visitors returned after reading a notice in this regard outside the office of the DTO. Wednesday and Thursday were again off owing to public holidays on account of Diwali and Vishwakarma Day. Today, the office opened at 11 am after two hours of strike by ministerial staff. Owing to the fact that the next two days would also be holiday, scores of applicants kept coming throughout the day and they had to wait for hours to reach the desired counters.
The worst hit were those who had to queue up at the cash counter for payment of fee for driving licence, renewal of licence and payment of quarterly road tax. There is a single counter to deal with all cases. The officials did not pay any heed to set up additional counters to handle the rush. This left many applicants like Abhilakh of Laxmipura wondering, “We are here to pay up the department. The office should have had extended facilities for us. Any first time visitor would get an impression as if we are pouncing on one another to receive some grants.” He had come to pay road tax for his goods carrier Tata Ace. GS Thapar (72), a resident of Mota Singh Nagar, said, “There is no separate counter for senior citizens. It is difficult to stand here for hours just to wait for receipt of cash. Even after I had paid the application and the cash, I had to wait for another half an hour to get the receipt of the same.” Davinder Singh, who had come from Phillaur, said, “I reached here at 9 am thinking that I would be among the first few in the queue. Then I got to know that the strike would end after two hours.” The officiating District Transport Officer, Kehar Singh, was a busy man today as there were scores of people standing outside his office in a queue all through the day to handle challans cases. Surjit hockey tourney doesn’t get even peanuts
Jalandhar, October 28 They fumed as the government failed to honour its decision to award Rs 10 lakh as prize money to the winning team of the recently concluded 28th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey tournament at Jalandhar. Initially, it was stated that the prize money would be finalised ahead of the tournament. The Deputy Commissioner-cum-president, Surjit Hockey Society, Priyank Bharti announced that the state government would award Rs 10 lakh to the winning team of the hockey tournament. Informed sources said it was decided that the Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Singh Badal, would award the money on the concluding day of the tournament. The Deputy CM failed to keep his date with the tournament and hence Rs 10 lakh cash award also went for a toss. Even the Local Bodies Minister, Tikshan Sud, who had come as a chief guest on the finals of the hockey tournament, had said a final decision pertaining to the award was still awaited. Hockey Olympians and enthusiasts questioned the stand of the state government, especially that of the Deputy CM on doling out Rs 2 crore for men and Rs 25 lakh for women. Olympians said while they were still waiting for a small amount of Rs 10 lakh, kabaddi teams would be showered with huge prize money. The ‘golden girl’ of Indian women’s hockey, Rajbir Kaur, said despite hockey being the national game, it doesn’t get the due treatment. “Firstly, if the state government had assured, it should have given Rs 10 lakh to the winning team.” she said. “Such attitude dampens the spirit of hockey players.” It is to mention here that since the last 28 years, Surjit hockey tournament has been conducted with the help of private sponsors and certain cash awards by visiting politicians. Reportedly, it has also come to the fore that the state government has offered Rs 10 lakh as invitation fees to all teams of the Kabaddi tournament. Olympian, Colonel Balbir Singh, said, “The state government was doing a great job by laying astroturfs and constructing and renovating stadiums in the state to promote hockey. But if the Rs 10 lakh prize was announced, it should have been delivered. If this matter is actually under consideration with the Deputy CM, the winning team of the tourney, Air India-Mumbai, should be awarded this amount,” he said. Promises should be kept

Jalandhar, October 28 Local BSP leaders have said, “It is the decision of the state government to allot land at 75 per cent amount of reserve price to national political parties. While the SAD and BJP have been allotted the land at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and Surya Enclave, respectively, and the Congress party had been allotted land by the Trust at Rajinder Nagar, we have been ignored.” Taking stand on the issue is Sukhwinder Kotli, state general secretary of the BSP, who has said, “We have decided to make a representation in this regard to the JIT chairman. If all parties are getting land allotted, it becomes our right as well to get some land. After all, ours too is a national party”.
