Champions League T20 Bangalore, October 5 Electing to bat, Somerset scored 146 for four with opener Kieswetter carrying the bat with a gritty unbeaten 56 and the bowlers then came up with a disciplined display by coming back strongly after it looked like that match had gone out of their grasp. Chasing 147 for a win, Warriors were comfortably placed at 71 for one at the halfway mark but some tight bowling and quick wickets saw the match tilting to Somerset's favour. Warriors needed 37 from the last three overs with five wickets in hand but they could score just 24 runs to end at 134 for eight and hand Somerset a 12-run victory in the Pool B match. For Somerset, Alfonso Thomas, Steve Kirby and Murali Kartik bagged two wickets apiece while Adam Dibble and van der Merwe chipped in with a wicket apiece. RCB win a thriller Arun Karthik hit a six off the last ball to win his side a thriller of a contest against South Australia by two wickets in the final Group B match of the Champions League Twenty20 here today. Earlier, a swashbuckling century by Daniel Harris and a smashing 70 from Callum Ferguson powered South Autsralia Redbacks to a commanding 214 for two. Electing to bat, the Australian outfit made a mockery of the hapless RCB bowlers to post the highest total in the tournament. Bangalore play New South Wales in the semifinal. — PTI |
CSK’s exit blessing in disguise: Dhoni
Chennai, October 5 Dhoni has been playing near non-stop cricket for a long time now, his only break coming during the five-match one-day series in the West Indies in June. India play five ODIs and a Twenty20 international against England at home. Apart from Dhoni, Suresh Raina and R Ashwin are two other Indian ODI players in the CSK squad. Meanwhile, David Warner smashed a blistering unbeaten 69-ball 135 as 2009 champions New South Wales put up a determined show to beat the defending champions Chennai by 46 runs to join Mumbai Indians from Group-A in the semifinals of the Champions League here today. Electing to bat, New South Wales posted an imposing 201 for two, riding on Warner's second Twenty20 ton. In their reply, Super Kings could muster just 155 before being all out in 18.5 overs. "Getting 200 became a difficult task when our big-hitters departed. That is very important to get the big hitters out of the game, you don't want them to bat 15 overs but want to get them in the powerplay," said
Dhoni. — PTI |
Rest lift Irani Cup
Jaipur, October 5 With ROI having already secured the Cup after taking the first innings lead, Rajasthan's only aim was to avoid an outright defeat but they failed to do so due to a disciplined bowling show by their opponents. India discard left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha led the charge with four wickets for 60 runs while pacer Umesh Yadav and leg-spinner Rahul Sharma chipped in with two wickets apiece. Pacers Vinay Kumar and Varun Aaron got a wicket each. Ojha ended the match with nine wickets. Resuming at 28 for no loss, Rajasthan offered brief resistance in the morning session before they folded just after tea for 213 in 73.2 overs. Lower-order batsman Madhur Khatri top-scored with a 53 while Rashmi Parida contributed 37 but other Rajasthan top batsmen did not play a substantial knock. With the target out of their reach, Rajasthan had only one option - to save the match. It looked possible when opener Aakash Chopra and Vineet Saxena resisted ROI for nearly an hour in the morning session. The breakthrough, however, came as Chopra failed to negotiate a turning ball off Ojha.

Depleted India still dangerous at home: Cook
Hyderabad, October 5 England whitewashed an injury-hit India 4-0 in Tests and beat them 3-0 in a five-match ODI series when Dhoni and his men came visiting in July, earlier. But Cook said the dominance in that series counts for little in the five-match series starting October 14 here. "I don't read too much into the favourites tag. It is going to be a very different challenge. I don't see any relation between what happened in England and what is going to happen here. India is historically strong at home," he told reporters, a day after his team's arrival for the series. Once again, India wear a depleted look with the missing list including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Munaf Patel and Ishant Sharma due to injuries sustained on the tour of England. Asked if the lack of experience of bowlers in the Indian team would work to England's advantage, Cook stressed that despite lack of international exposure, they would still be quite a force because of their grasp over local conditions. "They might be inexperienced in international games, but they are experienced in local conditions, which is an important thing. Obviously it is going to be a tough challenge," he said.

Tribune Exclusive
Patiala, October 5 The committee headed by former chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Mukul Mudgal is expected to submit it in some days. Highly placed sources confirmed that though the committee is ready with the fact-finding report it is awaiting the verdict by the NADA-appointed Anti Disciplinary Panel formed to hear dope related cases. “Till the NADA panel headed by a retired judge announces a verdict, the report would be kept in hibernation in possession of the panel”, they stated. Insiders claim that the report clearly “points towards systematic doping in the country” and how there is much more that needs to be done to save future sporting assets. As many as eight Indian athletes are under the scanner for their alleged role in dope-related issues and once their tests were found positive the Indian government sacked foreign athletic coach Yuri Ogrodnik. Sources confirmed that the Mukul Mudgal Committee on doping had divided the entire report in two parts and collected reports and first-hand information from two important sports centres of Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NIS) and SAI center Bangalore. “While the first part covers the system followed in NIS Patiala and Bangalore, the second part concentrates particularly on the current doping scandal”, they added. The report further suggests ways and means to the sports ministry to check doping and advises more ways to curb this menace completely. “There is more that needs to be done in awareness against doping in the country”, Mudgal told The Tribune. Interestingly the cases of international athletes who were found ‘positive' in tests conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Mandeep Kaur and Jauna Murmu have also been clubbed with the rest of the six athletes despite certain guidelines. Ideally the cases of Mandeep and Murmu should be heard separately, given the fact that their cases come under the IAAF rules as their cases, have practically been taken away from the domain of Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Meanwhile, Sini Jose and Tiana were found positive in an in-competition test at the Bangalore inter-State meet in June last, and two others, A.C. Ashwini and Priyanka Panwar, in out-of-competition tests done at Patiala. Further Mukul Mudgal said his report specifies that since the athletes have a very tough training schedule, there is much more that needs to be done by the administration to save them from doping and it includes keeping an eye on their training staff. “Though the report is detailed in nature, I cannot comment on its contents in detail”, he stated. |
Dope hearing adjourned again
Patiala, October 5 Since July their cases have been adjourned on flimsy grounds with adjournments in dope hearings becoming a scheduled affair with the next date now meaning, well over the prescribed three month period. In today’s hearing five of the tainted athletes were present to attend the proceedings, but were disappointed to know that it was again adjourned. Today no debate could take place as some vital staffers attached with the case were missing and therefore, the panel decided to adjourn the case. On the August 18 hearing attended by all the tainted athletes, advocate for the eight dope tainted athletes, RK Anand had sought certain documents following which the case was adjourned to next date in September. The same happened almost a fortnight back and then again today. As per conventions the panel should ideally announce a verdict in three months time. Sources confirmed that the athletes had tried their best to collect all supporting documents and video recordings of their sacked former foreign Indian athletic coach Yuri Ogrodnilk’s press conference in Patiala after his sacking and they are hopeful to use it to support their innocence claims. “We are hopeful to get a clean chit as the coach has himself said to everyone that we took what he gave us as the NIS food supplements were finished”, said one of the athletes, over phone. Interestingly while the tainted athletes are trying their best to wrap up the case early and get a clean chit for future tournaments, especially the London Olympics, the chances now look bleak following adjournments on trivial issues. A source close to the athletes confirmed that if the athletes get a clean chit, they have made up their minds to participate in some European athletic tournaments to prove their fitness. “They are very positive to come out clean from this mess and have collected many evidences in the past fortnight”, she added. |
Indian wrestlers dominate
Patiala, October 5 Hundreds of people reached the village to catch a glimpse of the wrestlers from Pakistan and England who reached Patiala yesterday to take part in this Championship. Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal was the chief guest on the opening ceremony of this tournament, which is being organised by Patiala Welfare Society. Addressing the audience, Sukhbir said Punjab government had taken every possible step to promote sports in the state and their efforts were bearing fruit. “We are organizing the second World Kabaddi Cup from November 1. After kabaddi, we will take steps to promote wrestling as well,” he added. Coach of Pakistan squad Sohail Rashid said such tournaments were really crucial as they acted as a bridge between the two nations. Results: Indian wrestler Rubeljeet Singh defeated Pakistan wrestler Ahmad Butt by 4-0, Jasdeep Singh from India defeated David Swini from England, Pappu Mahmud from Pakistan defeated Gurpreet Singh from Pakistan in a close bout by 4-3, Vijender from India defeated J Anwar from Pakistan by 1-0. England’s Jitender got the better of Indian wrestler Jitender Varinder and defeated him bu a huge margin of 7-0, India’s Rimpy defeated Pakistan’s I Hussain by 1-0, Gaurav from India beat S Mohanmmad by 1-0 and K Khanna from India defeated Y Revad from Pakistan. |
Vikas shines as three others lose
Patiala, October 5 But the evening session had started on a disappointing note for India as Jai Bhagwan lost 10-11 to Zhailouv in what seemed more of a wrestling bout with both the boxers holding and clinching each other constantly. The morning session too turned out to be a sorry one for the Indian camp. Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manoj Kumar (64kg) and rookie boxer L Devendro Singh (49kg) lost in the round of eight. While Manoj went down against world number 12 and 2011 European Champion Thomas Stalker of England, Devendro’s dream run came to end at the hands of Shin Jong of Korea the second ranked player in the world. But the Indian boxers will not go empty handed from the tournament as a quarterfinal finish assures them of a berth at the 2012 London Olympics. Manoj started cautiously as did his opponent; both boxers matched each other punch for punch in the opening round, but Stalker the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist in the light weight division managed to gain a one point lead (4:5). In the second round, he upped the ante giving the Indian boxer a hard time with his heavy blows (7:11). Manoj, who was trailing by five points at the beginning of the final round, came back strongly with some swift combinations, but was not able to gain the advantage and lost 18:24. Devendro, who was given the tag of ‘giant-killer’ doused 7th seeded Carlos Quipo of Ecuador to make his place in the quarter-finals of the light fly weight division. But the 19-year-old faced his toughest challenge
against 2011 Asian Champion Shin Jong. The Korean who was taller than Devendro took complete advantage of his height. The Indian boxer found it quite difficult to get inside the long arms of Shin and get his usual game going. The Korean on the other was gaining advantage owing to his long reach. Devendro was down two points at the end of the first round (9:11). Shin made best use of his experience and stretched the advantage in the second as well. Devendro kept trying hard to break the defence of his opponent, but failed to make an impact. His world championship campaign came to an end with a 16:28 loss. |
