Champions League T20
Bangalore, October 3 Earlier, riding on Chris Gayle's blitzkreig, Royal Challengers Bangalore set Somerset an intimidating target of 207. Put into bat, RCB ran up a powerful 206 for six, the highest total in the CLT20 this season. Gayle, who was in an aggressive mood, smashed eight sixes and four boundaries during his 46-ball 86. Thanks to his pyrotechnics, RCB belted a CLT20 high 14 sixes in an innings. After a dismal outing for most part of the tournament, Gayle let his bat do the talking, that had had the English bowlers scurrying for cover. He was particularly severe against George Dockrell who conceded 21 runs in an over, including three towering sixes. Peter Trego was also treated with utter disdain, the towering Jamaican taking 19 runs in the medium pacer's first over. Trego conceded as many as 50 runs in three overs. Gayle had failed to get going in the first two games, but this time round the Jamaican was at his imperious best, hitting the ball all over the park. Gayle, dropped by Joss Butler off Steven Kirby at 4, capitalised the reprieve. After losing his opening partner Tillakaratne Dilshan (23), Gayle joined hands with consistent Virat Kohli (33) as the second wicket pair sticthed a belligerent 70 off 40 balls. Saurabh Tiwary scored 18 runs while adding 49 runs for the third wicket in Gayle's company. In the latter part of the innings, Mayank Agarwal made a 8-ball 19, including two sixes. Chennai: Languishing at the bottom of the table, defending champions Chennai Super Kings require victory by a big margin to keep their hopes of making the semifinals of the Champions League Twenty20 alive when they take on New South Wales here tomorrow. Despite being placed at the bottom of Group A, the Super Kings still have a chance to proceed to the next stage as their pool heads into its final round of matches with no team still assured of a semifinal berth. Topping the group are Mumbai Indians, who have overcome a debilitating injury situation to be at the forefront with five points. However, because of their poor run rate in the series so far, even they are yet to be assured of a place in the last four berth. Next in the list is the Australian outfit NSW with four points, followed by Cape Cobras with three. — Agencies |
Irani Trophy
Jaipur, October 3 Starting the day at 53 for three, Bisht and Parida resisted the Rest of India attack with aplomb but the hosts still require 206 runs to avoid follow-on after ending the day at 307 for six, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Rest of India had posted a mammoth 663 all out in their first essay. After struggling in the first two sessions, Rest claimed all three wickets of the day in the last session with paceman R Vinay Kumar striking twice. Young batsman Ashok Menaria played a good knock after coming at number six and was unbeaten on 59 in the company of Deepak Chahar (1) when stumps were drawn for the day. As the situation demanded, Bisht and Parida dug in and batted sensibly and survived the first two sessions, adding 158 runs for the fourth wicket. They collected 82 runs in the first session of the day and 76 in the second, keeping at bay the Rest bowlers for a long period of 64 overs. However, the partnership ended in the very first over after the tea break when Parida edged one straight to second slip Manish Pandey off Vinay Kumar. — PTI |

New Delhi, October 3 The 19-year-old Devendro pummelled Joselito Velazquez of Mexico 40-19 in what was biggest points win of the ongoing event till now. Jai, on the other hand, got the better of Miroslav Serban of the Czech Republic 14-6 in his bout. The duo joined Manoj Kumar (64kg), Dinesh Kumar (81kg) and Vikas Krishan in the pre-quarters as the Indian boxers continued to pack a powerful punch at the mega-event from where quarter-finalists (from 49kg to 81kg division) will qualify for the London Olympics. While Devendro will take on Ecuador's Carlos Quipo, who defeated Turkey's Ferhat Pehlivan 17-10, Jai would be up against seventh seeded Irishman David Joyce, who thrashed Afghanistan's Mohammad Khaiber 26-13. Devendro opened the proceedings for India and the diminutive Manipuri, playing his maiden senior international event, was off to a flier of a start. Opening up a massive 19-7 lead in the opening round itself, Devendro was up 31-14 by the end of the second round. The Indian slowed down a bit in the final three minutes, notching up nine points to total 40 against opponent's 19 in final analysis. "It was a sensational performance. He used a combination of right straights and left hooks besides the occasional uppercuts. His punches were landing so perfectly that it was just amazing to watch," national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu told PTI from Baku. "We actually told him to slow down a bit in the final round. His aggression had to be seen to be believed. I expected him to do well and today he was just unstoppable. The other guy ended up getting mandatory knockdown eight count twice in the bout," he added. Jai was the next man in for India and he was also in the lead from the very start against Serban. Leading 3-1 in the opening three minutes, he went on offensive in the next round to make it 9-3. The Commonwealth Championships gold-medallist continued his domination in the final three minutes to clinch the issue with ease. — PTI |
‘FIH cannot run Indian hockey’
Chandigarh, October 3 During an year when the sport, and all who are in it, should be focusing on Olympic qualification (India missed out on the 2008 Olympics), the FIH-IHF-HI drama is the only thing making headlines. For former coach MK Kaushik, this is probably the lowest ebb he has seen Indian hockey at. “The way things are happening is damaging for the sport. Hockey India (HI) is definitely not realizing the amount of damage their antics have done to the game. “The FIH prefers HI over any other body for they have found a way to milk the sport through HI. Otherwise why the obsession with only HI running the sport? How can they question our courts, and our ministry and say that even a meger (between IHF and HI) is not acceptable to them?” Kaushik adds that IHF had to bear the brunt of the deeds of one corrupt person, but if those are to be the grounds, then the IOA and HI bodies should be sacked entirely. “The World Series Hockey was a step in the right direction. But it seems everytime Indian hockey tries to fight, these people push it back even deeper.” Even former India coach Harendra Singh feels that the welfare of the sport is paramount and nobody’s ego should interfere with that. “The main issue is not who will run the sport, rather how will they run it. People at such levels should realize that with maturity, they can end this bickering and bring about a good enough solution that helps hockey grow.” But former Olympian MP Singh believes that the most objectionable thing today is that the FIH is trying to overrule the Sports Ministry as well as a high court verdict that recognizes IHF as the official body. “The FIH has no rights and no business trying to muscle its way in and dictate how the sport is run in our country. They are not alone though and it is a case of someone from within telling them how to ruin the situation. It is a shameful scenario and it is time that we don’t abide by all their unreasonable demands. We have to stand up and set an example.” He further adds, “They are threatening to bar the team from the Olympics, but this is not the time to surrender. We know they, with the alliance of Hockey India, are hurting Indian hockey and we have to oppose it. Instead of building a future for the sport, they are systematically killing it off. Just look at how the number of tournaments held every year has dropped drastically. They are pitting people against each other and hurting hockey.” Not game for chaos The main issue is not who will run the sport, rather how will they run it. People at such levels should realize that with maturity, they can end this bickering and bring about a good enough solution that helps hockey grow. The FIH prefers HI over any other body for they have found a way to milk the sport through HI. Otherwise why the obsession with only HI running the sport? How can they question our courts, and our ministry and say that even a meger is not acceptable to them?” |
London, October 3 Rob Smedley is heard on a video of the race telling Massa: "Hold Hamilton as much as we can. Destroy his race as much as we can. Come on boy." Hamilton was accosted by Massa after the race during a television interview, with the Brazilian still infuriated by having his rear tyre punctured on lap 12, the Daily Express reports. It was seen by many as another aggressive action by Hamilton, but if Massa had it in his mind to slow down Hamilton, it might explain why the two touched. Massa had to stop for a new wheel, while Hamilton fell to 19th after changing his front wing and was later penalised by race stewards. — ANI |
Barcelona go top, Higuain gets Real Madrid hat-trick
Madrid, October 3 An injury-plagued Barcelona moved into first place with 14 points as Adriano gave them their first away win of the season yesterday. Unfashionable Levante are tucked just behind on goal difference after a 1-0 win against Real Betis, while Real are a point further back in third spot ahead of Malaga and Valencia who also have 13 points. After draws against Real Sociedad and Valencia, Barcelona went into their game at Sporting with a lengthy injury list. Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta were among the midfielders in the treatment room while neither Carlos Puyol nor Gerard Pique started in defence. Adriano grabbed the only goal after 11 minutes, knocking in a rebound after a Xavi Hernandez shot came back off a post. Eric Abidal went off injured after the break to add to Barca's defensive worries but they never looked likely to concede. "We played a strong Sporting who were very deep and worked together well. There was no space because they closed it down," said Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. "Always when we play after a Champions League game, it is difficult, but I think we did well in the first half and then faded after that." Real Madrid have had a stuttering start to the season but have now bounced back from one point in two games with back-to-back wins. Cristiano Ronaldo hit the post after just three minutes at Espanyol but Real went ahead after 17 minutes with Ronaldo setting up Higuain. — AFP |
Devvarman goes down to Stepanek at Japan Open
Tokyo, October 3 The unseeded Indian, ranked 85, lost 4-6, 3-6 to his seventh seed opponent in the singles event of the $1,214,50 hard court tournament. Statistically, it has been a successful year for Somdev as he touched a career-high rank of 62 this season but lost in the first rounds of several ATP tournaments. Reaching the final of the Johannesburg event and the pre-quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Masters remain the highlight of his season. Somdev did create chances against Stepanek, who also figured in top-10 at one time in his career, but the Indian could not convert much of the break points he earned. In all, he managed to get seven chances but converted only two and dropped his serve twice in each of the two sets. The Indian challenge is still alive in the ATP 500 event with Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi competing in the doubles. The Indo-Pak pair has been given the top billing and they open their campaign against Brazilian pair of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares. — PTI |

My recovery slow but positive: Zaheer
New Delhi, October 3 "The first phase of my rehab programme went off pretty well. I have started with the second phase of my rehab. I will be soon going to the National Cricket Academy. My progress has been slow but a positive one," Zaheer told mediapersons after receiving the Arjuna Award from Sports Minister Ajay Maken at latter's residence. The Indian speedster could not attend the awards function at the Rashtrapathi Bhawan on August 29 as he was recuperating from his ankle surgery. Zaheer, who will turn 33 this Saturday, said that he is taking one day at a time and not trying to rush his comeback. "To start bowling, I have to get back the full strength in my ankle. Then I might play a few club matches or first-class matches. I am taking one day at a time and not setting any targets." Zaheer did not want to commit on any specified date when asked whether he was eyeing India's cricket tour of Australia for making a comeback. — PTI |

Cook defends Anderson and Broad
London, October 3 Cook put up a stout defence of his bowlers and said Gul should have approached the authorities, if he had seen such a thing. "We certainly haven't tampered with the ball and if he did have any complaints he should have gone to the ICC over that," Cook told reporters at Heathrow Airport before his team's departure for India where they are scheduled to play five one-dayers and a T20 game. "I saw Anderson do it last year when we went to England. Then in the Ashes series Stuart Broad was seen roughing up the ball with his boots. All these methods are part and parcel of the game to obtain reverse swing with the old ball," Gul had said. Gul, reportedly, later tried to play down his remarks. "I was explaining that the ball gets scratched when it is thrown against the rough surface or hits the advertisement boards along the boundary rope. In this manner, I said, every bowler can be accused of doing it," he told the media in Pakistan. Cook felt that matter should end now. "I think he has almost said himself that it has been a bit of a mountain out of a molehill," the England captain said. Gul's comments came barely a few days after Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar wrote in his autobiography that he had regularly tampered with the ball during his career. — PTI |
