In the line of fashion
At the neighbouring stalls on either side, nothing was being quoted for less than Rs 5,000. Maybe it has something to do with the exhibitions where prices are inflated and escalated!
The stall in the centre, however, has price tags unlike the competitors. It was all the more surprising as the label read - Neelanjan Ghosh, the designer who was a regular at the Lakme Fashion Week before he drifted to the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in a bid to woo fashion-conscious people of Delhi. His resume does not end there — add to it the association with John Galliano, before he was ousted from Christian Dior. So, when Neelanjan quotes the price of a pure georgette kurti with crystal work at Rs 2,500, he catches attention of everyone who passes by. The client (bargaining comes naturally to people in this part of the country) asks for a rebate of Rs 500 and without any hassle, Neelanjan obliges. "Price revision was the first thing I did before bringing my collection to Chandigarh. This is my first show here and more than earning money, the focus is on taking my work to people and building a relationship." He dubs this visit to Chandigarh as a learning experience, just like in every city he visits. This is what made him shift from LFW to WLIFW. "Delhi is the fashion capital of India. People pay the price for their love for fashion and they don't mind it." As for Chandigarh, he says, people love fashion but the market is still immature. His collection comprises pure georgette, silk and cotton; everything with a touch of bling through zari-work and swarovski. Although he is better known for his cuts and patterns, bling as a factor has not been ignored this time. "Again the dynamics of the city come into question. People in this region love bling, so why not provide it." Presence of silk in the ensemble, when designers prefer lighter, flowing materials, is another unusual aspect. "Nets, chiffons, georgettes; no fabric can replace the ever-graceful silk." He readily accepts being a conformist. By the same measure, he is not in favour of the growing number of NIFTS in India. "Most of the big designers are alumni of NIFT. Students who manage to make it through are passionate about designing and craft. Increasing the number of NIFTS would mean diluting the quality," comes from the proud alumni of NIFT, Delhi. But even after passing-out of the most prestigious fashion institute of India, even he admits that it's not easy to make a mark in the fashion industry, though the scenario is better than before. Young designers now get noticed because fashion has been bifurcated well. There are categories of haute couture, prêt e porter; then of creations with minimalist and heavy bling, layers and uniformity, overlapping colours and monochromatics. "If you can be an expert at any, you will get your due." Neelanjan's expertise lies in experimenting with silhouettes, which helped him get work with John Galliano. The next question was obvious, his reaction to the ace designer's controversial ouster from Christian Dior. "When you are a part of the fashion industry, you are bound to be in limelight all the time. Whatever John said was blown out of proportion. Unfortunately, all the great work he did was ignored." So, is it difficult to survive in the fashion industry? "Not really if work is the priority and everything else secondary." Is there still a need to explain why Neelanjan has gone this far in such a short period of time and at this young age? ashima@tribunemail.com

Coloured judgment
The French cosmetic brand L'Oreal is again in the news for the wrong reason — it has been accused of altering actress Freida Pinto's skin tone in their latest campaign, but the brand has denied it.
"This is with reference to certain incorrect reports on the Internet about L'Oréal Paris lightening Freida Pinto's skin-tone in the campaign 'Colors Take Flight Project Runway'. L'Oréal Paris strongly reiterates that Freida Pinto's skin-tone in the campaign has not been altered in any way," said a statement from the company Thursday. "This campaign was meant to highlight Freida Pinto's make-up colours applied on her eyes and lips. Thus, some powerful studio lights with ring-flash have been used for this purpose to create a runway effect on the picture. There has been no whitening retouching process whatsoever on her face," it added. The Slumdog Millionaire actress has been L'Oréal Paris spokesperson since 2009. This is not the first time the cosmetics brand has been accused of lightening the skin tones of its models. Recently, the brand was accused for using airbrushed pictures of Aishwarya Rai for one of their campaigns. — IANS

Shall we dance?
More than the clichéd rhetoric of most reality show discoveries, Jai
Kumar Nair from Zee TV's Dance India Dance Season 1 gets behind the
economy of the art form. "In some of the countries abroad, dancers
are viewed as businessmen…there was a time when people used to laugh
and say, 'Oh he's a dancer, but not any more." From here on,
whatever the dancer-choreographer has to say, perhaps, connects; makes
sense.
"Many of the dancers are earning much more than call centre employees or a manager in a private sector firm. There must be close to 25,000 background dancers in the country. A lot of people, who for some reason or the other, can't study, but they can dance. Why not take it up as a career?" he questions. In
Chandigarh to announce the auditions and a brand new season, he now
plays the ambassador part to perfection, "All other dance reality
shows are inspired by us. This was the first dance reality show.
Moreover, before our show, nobody knew dance forms like popping and
locking or Afro-Jazz…we introduced so many new dance forms." A show where now he's come a long way - from a participant to a jury member! "I'm not exactly aware of my role yet, but I'd be playing a mentor to the participants." The guy's also signed a dance film, but "can't reveal much about it." Who does he consider among the gifted dancers in Bollywood? "I think Hrithik Roshan is really talented. Apart from him there's Shahid Kapoor. Among women I think Madhuri Dixit is a great dancer. I don't think any of the today's actors have that body movement and rhythm." Coming
back to the show; like with all others, they too promise to be back with
a difference. "This one is going to be lot more difficult and
crazy. We are planning to introduce newer dance forms." Something
he considers a requisite for being a good performer. "Any good
dancer should know at least two dance forms really well. Many of them
are good in just one form. Variety is very important." How many
does he know? He laughs, "Let me count…Jazz, contemporary, hip
hop, salsa, cha cha, cha; currently I'm learning semi-classical."
Hold on, that's half a dozen already! manpriya@tribunemail.com (Auditions on October 4 at DC Montessori School, Mani Majra)

Crash course
A new survey has revealed that nearly 30 per cent drivers send text messages while at the wheel and 8 per cent do text and drive once a week. The findings by road safety charity Brake and insurance company Direct Line is based on responses from 841 drivers.
The poll follows a recent Ofcom report, which warned of increased levels of smartphone addiction in the UK by users who are unable to go long without checking their phone. Brake and Direct Line said other research had shown that texting at the wheel can make drivers 23 times more likely to cause a crash and that using a phone to email or surf the web also causes distractions. "People who text, use the web or social networking when driving are taking enormous risks with their own and other people's lives. This kind of irresponsible behaviour is illegal and it kills, so there should be no excuses," Julie Townsend said.—ANI

The Thai tadka
The food in Thailand is spicy with ingredients like basil leaves, lemon, galangal, coconut milk, coriander powder and cumin powder. Now, all you Thai food-lovers can look forward to the authentic taste at JW Marriot-35. Courtesy Rungtiwa Sorlae, the culinary expert who is here all the way from Bangkok.
"Thai women like working at the forefront and that's what I've been doing. I was trained as a chef at the Bangkok College of Administration and Tourism, and started my career at Novotel Lotus in Bangkok," says Rungtiwa. She adds, "My first stint in India was at Zest, DLF Emporio Mall, Delhi, and now I'm in Chandigarh to present real Thai food." A refreshing drink like Thai ice tea, prepared by using coconut milk, condensed milk, cinnamon, cardamom and lemon grass starts it all. Add to it choice of Thai noodles soup, available in four varieties of stalk, two vegetarian and two non-vegetarians, and your taste buds are ready! Starters include prawn and potato crackers with red chilli paste; chicken satay, soya nuggets served with a salad consisting of onions, cucumbers, vinegar, salt and sugar served in shot glasses. Add to it a mixture of mushrooms and soya served in baby bowls; you are ready for the main course! And for it there are four types of curries that are used - the green, yellow, red and massaman. Although coconut is an integral part of Thai cuisine, at Marriot, people who are not comfortable with the taste of coconut, can relish dishes prepared in some other oil. The platter includes stir-fried mushrooms, vegetarian curry, Pad Thai noodles, Jasmine rice, Prawn curry, stir-fried fish in hot basil and beans as well as stir-fried soya bean. Do people in Chandigarh like the authentic Thai flavour? "They do because they know a bit about the ingredients and taste. But, I prefer providing them with the exact taste without any changes," says Rungtiwa. The lady chef is happy to work in Chandigarh and she likes South-Indian dosa, aloo paranthas and sometimes even tries her hands at them. sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

Hybrid beauty
satish narula Gardening is a dynamic process. With the ever-changing scenario in the concepts of horticulture, gardens can be designed by judiciously using various planting material available as per the suitability of the space and location. Introduction of new varieties has made some of the older species vanish. But then seeing the resolve of the gardeners to strive for the best, the research is also trying to keep pace and the lost glory has been restored with a bang by the introduction of new versions. Till a few years back, there were only a few species that adorned the gardens and those could be counted on tips; rose, kaner, chandni, bougainvillea, hibiscus etc. The colour range was also limited. The last few years have brought a revolution in gardening. The usual types have been replaced with new introductions. Some of the old species have got a new lease of life with the introduction of their hybrids versions. One such type of plants is Hibiscus. Only a few years back, the only type of hibiscus one knew was the single flowered red species or the variegated one. The gardeners used this plant in many ways, be it in groups, as single plant or even in big pots. Some enthusiastic gardeners also tried their hand at growing it as a hedge but that was not a good idea. The repeated pruning of fast growing shrub fails it to flower. The base of the main stem is also exposed. Hibiscus is now sought after the introduction of new hybrids, the Hawaian hybrids. The Indian types are different from the Hawaian types in the petal formation. In case of Indian types, the petals are singular and cut till the base whereas in case of Hawaian hybrids these are fused and form one unit. The range of colours in the hybrids is amazing. You can also have bi-colour hybrids. The flowers are also with frilled and ruffled margins. There are some of the old types that have been lesser known and exploited. Remarkable among these is the blue hibiscus. This has religious significance too and its foliage and flowers are offered to Goddess Durga. (Narula is a Chandigarh-based horticulturist) |

Almost half of them (44 per cent) admit they do five-and-a-half hours of housework, including cooking dinner, ironing and making packed lunches for the family. It is only at 10.30pm that they sit down. Just over half - 50.8 per cent - said they felt more pressurised at home than at work. —ANI

A different PET story
Gone are the times when the thought of owning a pet meant that a 'dog' was going to land up at your place. The world is getting innovative in this field as well.
Says Kuber Malik, fourth-year law student, PU, "I never thought of keeping a dog as a pet. Earlier I had turtles and the recent ones are white mice." Internet has by far helped out people with so many things and video-sharing sites like Youtube are encouraging people to share their experiences. "I viewed a lot of videos and did a lot of research on white mice; regarding their maintenance and diet and found them really cute. So, I decided to get them home. I have three white mice by the names of Skittles, Squishy and Squeaky," he adds. And a dog is definitely happy with its friends from other species. Lawyer Aditya Jain has a dog named Badshah, some fish and twenty rabbits that happily co-exist. "I always wanted to keep different kinds of pets along with my dog. For the rabbits, I have a special cage almost like a natural burrowing; three feet tall and three feet underground," says Aditya. He adds, "After a tiring day at work, I look forward to going back to my pets, playing with them and feeding them. In the near future, I want to own some birds." Stray animals often visit our doors, but how many of us actually think of feeding and finally keeping them as pets? Saachi Sachdev, BA first-year student, MCM DAV College-36, found two cats, one white and one black, and planned to give them to the PFA. But she got so attached to them that she adopted one of them as her pet. "Our cat's name is Zappy because it somehow looks zapped all the time. I feel that cats are more affectionate than dogs," says Saachi. She adds, "I wasn't a cat lover ever, but I'm so used to it now that cannot even think of abandoning it." The mere thought of the reptile iguana might scare the hell out of you, but there are some who love them. At the Sheena Pet Shop located at Sector-20, Chandigarh, people are ready to shed Rs 20,000 for a single one. Says, Sonu, owner of the shop, "Iguanas are totally safe to keep, do not harm at all and are purely vegetarian. We are the only ones having them for sale in Chandigarh." He adds, "They become fond of their owners and you can even leash them or just let them loose to play." Are you already thinking of some unusual pet? sabiatalwar@gmail.com

Saviour Spaniel!
A woman in UK has credited her faithful pet spaniel for saving her life from breast cancer. Brenda Jones, of Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales, has revealed how her five-year-old spaniel, called Mrs Murphy, behaved strangely for a week before pawing at her left breast, causing her to jump up in pain.
The 47-year-old a mother of two examined the spot and discovered a strange lump. She went to her GP the following day and was diagnosed with a grade three tumour in her breast. Brenda was admitted to hospital for emergency surgery and is now undergoing a course of chemotherapy. She now believes her dog saved her life. "She was sitting on my lap all the time, something she didn't normally do. I'm convinced she sensed I had a tumour," the Daily Star quoted her as saying. "Without her pawing me that day it would have gone undiagnosed," she added. — ANI

Socially active
Seems like women are leading the way when it comes to choosing social media as a means of staying in touch. A new survey has found that women are more likely to use Facebook, Twitter and blogging to stay in touch with friends, family and coworkers, while men are more likely to use phones and voicemail to stay in the loop.
The study, commissioned by Internet telecommunications company Rebtel, looked at the online habits of a group of 2,361 adults from the US. It found that 68 per cent of women use social media to stay in touch with their friends, compared to only 54 per cent of men, while 60 per cent of women use it to keep in touch with family, compared to only 42 per cent of men. Women are also more likely to use social networks to correspond with their colleagues — 34 per cent compared to just 22 per cent of men. "Our findings show that men tend to lag behind women when it comes to communicating with others through social media, which debunks other recent studies that suggest that men are more savvy networkers between the sexes," the New York Daily News quoted Rebtel CEO Andreas Bernstrom as saying. — ANI

Laugh away your worries
Renee Singh We were all clutching our stomachs and literally laughing our guts out. Someone had just cracked a joke and my sane and sober self was almost falling off the chair in peals of laughter. Laughter is honestly one of my favourite stress management strategies simply because it's attitudinal and it's free. In today's world when there is a price attached to everything it's a major relief to find something that does not come with a price tag. A sense of humour is one of 24 main signature strengths one can possess and laughter perhaps is one of the most powerful tools of positive psychology. A research has shown that the health benefits of laughter are far ranging. It is seen that laughter reduces pain, brings happiness and increases immunity among all its other benefits. No wonder we have so many laughter clubs springing up in city. Benefits of laughter Laughter reduces the levels of stress hormones like adrenalin and enhances healthy hormones like endorphins and neurotransmitters. Laughter increases the number of anti body producing cells. All this leads to a healthy immune system and fewer physical effects of stress. Physical release A good laugh always cleanses the system. Have you noticed how light, energised and rejuvenated you feel after you're had a hearty laugh just. Laughter provides a good physical and emotional release. Internal workout A good belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs and even works on the shoulders, leaving muscles more relaxed. It is a great workout for the heart as well. Great distraction It takes away all the focus from anger, guilt and other negative emotions. Changed perspective Humour gives us a more light-hearted perspective to life and helps us view events as challenges making them less threatening and more positive. Social benefits A smiling face is such a joy to view. Sometimes, even when we are not really in a good mood and we see someone who's smiling, it just cheers us up. Laughter is very infections so if you are laughing and others join in you are actually reducing their stress levels. It also helps create a new level of bonding on a socially interactive level "Laugh and the world laughs with you" has been a famous quote. Not only in spreading happiness and reducing stress, I feel that laughter creates a level of joy that is immeasurable. So if you want to reduce stress through this great Laughter Therapy, follow these principles: Start the day with a smile. Take a step back in a sticky situation, try and see the humour in it. Value extremes by recognising the humorous potential of your frustrating and annoying situation. Have a funny buddy so that in times of stress you can connect and find happiness in sharing frustrations and laughing through them. Watch funny shows to lighten up your heavy attitude. Read books, a classic humour book can surely lighten up the heart. Join a fun club, it's a fantastic place to enjoy a good laugh. Taking part in amusing activities together can really cheer you up. Nothing comes as easy as a good laugh and remember the old saying "Laughter is the best medicine". (Singh is a Chandigarh based psychotherapist) |

Dress like Deol
Abhay Deol is easily one of the most stylish and charming actors in Bollywood. He has a great sense of humour and presence too. He shares some style tips. Jean therapy
Be careful with jeans. Cover up If you are wearing jeans, always wear a smart jacket. You ought to feel good and important in it. That is how you test how smart it is! Foot note I wouldn't wear trainers, but you could even carry off chappals if you project the right image. It depends a lot on the individual. Moccasins are a safe bet. Mix 'n' match It's the way you mix things with smart/casual that counts. Your look is casual, but it's obvious that there was some thought behind it. Think about matching one colour if you can. Think twice It's good if you spark a debate with what you wear. Something that doesn't conform with the rest of your outfit is what will add that extra edge. You can do that with your shoes, for example, to throw people off. Hats off I have a black felt bowler hat which I do wear whenever I travel abroad. I don't know how people would react to it in Mumbai, but it gets a few laughs and raises a few eyebrows in most places. I bought it in New York, from an old hat shop on 34th street.

Home bound
Deepika Padukone is happy these days as she has bought her new house and is happily decorating it. It's her dream home. Apart from that she has some lovely films in her kitty and is looking her best these days. Deepika is also happy with little things in life.
Success story My Dad has always taught me that once success goes to your head then you will lose your stand and stop concentrating on your work. So be it success or stardom, I never get complacent because Bollywood is a fickle field. And I am happy with what I do in my life, I never regret. I am thankful to my parents for grounding me and being there for me. Happy home I am very happy with my new house in Prabhadevi. I have been looking for a new house since a long time and finally got something that I wanted. It's a big house and bigger than where I was staying. I love both places and have already made memories.
Memorable moments There have been many moments in my life. Some are getting a Sports Award in school from Dad as he was the Chief Guest, then shooting my first ever ad with Liril when I was in college and bagging OSO opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Family comes first If I am not working I make sure I am taking out time for my family because I have been staying away from home since a long time. So whenever I get time, I go back home. We have a close-knit familyand we are all close. My Mom cooks whatever I like to eat when I go back. Work pressure I have become a workaholic since I started my modelling and then acting career. And when I am working on a film I try and concentrate on my character and role. I have Desi Boyz with Akshay Kumar and John Abraham. It's a funny film and I will be seen in my best outfits with Chitrangada Singh who is very sexy. Then there is Cocktail with Saif Ali Khan and a couple more films such as Race 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Global waves
Canada-based fusion band Josh is happy with their Bollywood outing. The band gave the title song Chaddi Wale Yaar in recent release Speedy Singhs, and, one of the band members Rupinder Magon had his acting debut in the film as well. "Pop is almost non existent from Indian music industry. It's the giant Bollywood that has taken over the entire music industry," says Rup.
Though based in Canada, getting a Bollywood break wasn't easy. But with Speedy Singhs, Josh has got a foothold. "We are already on talks on next Bollywood projects," says Rup. Versatility has been the USP of this band that has collaborated with Sukhbir and Nelly Furtado. Making music remains their forte; they have released around four albums so far and working on the next. The acting experience has left Rup humbled. "It meant a huge thing for me to have worked with Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher," says Rup who finds it heartening to see Bollywood make waves globally.

Back in action
Post the success of films such as Ghajini, Singham, and Bodyguard, action films with top stars are back in the limelight. We take a look at upcoming action films featuring big names.
Force The film has a good-looking cast comprising John Abraham, Genelia D'souza, and Vidyut Jamwal. John looks like he is sleepwalking through the movie and the rest of the cast also looks lifeless. Apparently, John ran on moving trains in the movie. Both John and Vidyut worked hard to achieve their physiques. John plays a cop, Genelia is his wife who is murdered, and Vidyut is the villain. Watch John's bare chest and see him run on trains in this Nishikant Kamat film this weekend. Ra.One This is the biggest and most talked about film of Shah Rukh's career. It is a superhero flick and features action sequences at par with international films. They also look similar to what we have already seen in American superhero films. With a Diwali release and tremendous hype, the family superhero saga is set to become a blockbuster. Don 2 Don was not a great movie but it was successful enough to be turned into a franchise. Since it is Farhan Akhtar, we hope it is a classy and stylish film. The stunts look inspired from the Mission: Impossible series. Anyway, it is a highly anticipated film. Find out all about Don on December 23, 2011. Agent Vinod Directed by Sriram Raghavan (of Ek Hasina Thi) fame, this spy thriller is Saif Ali Khan's dream project. We can assure you that it will be a very classy product. It features top-of-the-line stunts and has been shot in exotic Eastern Europe. Kareena also kicks butt in the movie. Watch Saif live his dream with his ladylove on December 9 this year. Azaan When you have money and SRK for a friend, you can indulge yourself by making a film starring you. Azaan is an original action film about a spy who saves the world from a massive terrorist attack. Sachin Joshi (somebody whom you won't look at twice) is starring in it along with South African Playmate Candice Boucher. The film is directed by Prashant Chadha (who has previously made Himesh Reshammiya's films) and will release in October. Now, we need a saviour! Ek Tha Tiger Salman is on a hit spree and so is Katrina Kaif. Kabir Khan directs the former couple in a romantic action thriller that is currently being shot in Ireland and will also be shot in Iraq. Salman plays a RAW agent (spy) and Katrina plays an "ordinary girl." The film releases on Eid in 2012, like most of Salman's films. Players This is an Abbas-Mustan film so expect it to be very stylish and stylised with expensive cars blowing up. The official remake of The Italian Job features Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Muksh, Bipasha, Sonam, and others. Neil has trained in some special skills and he plays the bad guy. We can guarantee that the movie is full of twists and turns and super-cool action. It will release in January 2012. — HRM

Couple to reckon with
Genelia D'Souza will be seen in Force opposite John Abraham. This is the first time that the actress is sharing the screen with John and she is very excited about the film and working in an action film with John.
Sweet success Ever since the Force promo came out, I have been receiving very sweet comments. Almost all my industry friends liked the promo and I am receiving all good comments on my role. I am not playing a college girl in this film and they are excited to see me in an action film. Actually I have done action films and strong roles in the South but in Bollywood I have always received roles where I have to play a college girl. Greater Force It's an action movie and I am very excited to be part of it and share the screen with John Abraham. He is superb, cool and very focused on his work. We share many common friends so getting along with himduring shooting was not difficult. My character I play the love interest of John in the film and I am not playing a college girl in the film but I am playing a young, child-like and innocent character. She is mature and is a social activist. She does what she believes in and that's what attracts my lover (John. It's an interesting character. Somehow it suited my personality. Beautiful love story Force is a remake of Tamil film Khakka Khakka. It is a romantic action thriller. There may be more action but it is a very touching love story too. I think the chemistry between me and John has worked well. We look lovely together. He looks manly and rugged and I look innocent and very feminine so that it is a good combo. Personal life I have stopped reading newspapers because everyday I read something new about me which I don't even know. I don't like fake rumours about me. I don't take it for granted. I have friends; I roam around with them and that doesn't mean I am dating someone. If I am getting married or dating someone I will be open about it.—HRM
