9-year-old boy crushed to death
Jalandhar, September 27 The deceased has been identified as Raj Mohit, students of Class III of JD Public School and resident of Dhilwan village, while the injure, his elder brother Inderaj Rohit, is a Class VIII student of the same school. After putting the body on the road, irate villagers and family members assembled at the spot and blocked the road for over an hour, besides smashing windowpanes of the truck. The protesters also raised anti-police slogans demanding action against the plying of overloaded trucks on the road. Eyewitnesses said Raj Mohit and Inderaj Rohit were riding on their bicycles when a truck, heading towards Dhilwan village, hit them from behind leaving Raj Mohit dead on the spot. The truck, loaded with bricks, crushed Raj Mohit and his bicycle. Indraj Rohit, however, was lucky as his cycle was tossed in the air and he fell at some distance after the collision. He also sustained minor injuries. The truck driver escaped from the scene leaving behind the vehicle, a relative added. Receiving information, the deceased’s father Inderjit Singh and his family members reached the spot. The deceased’s mother and other relatives were inconsolable. The lucky survivor was traumatised after the mishap. “I saw Mohit in a pool of blood and a crushed cycle at his side after the accident. A minute before the tragedy we were talking and were unaware of the death trailing us,” recalled Rohit, while holding back his tears. The villagers went on a rampage and protested against the police and district administration leaving the body on the road for over an hour. They also damaged the truck to lodge their protest. Receiving information, senior police official, including ADCP (HQ) NS Mahal and ADCP (City-I) RK Sharma, reached the spot with heavy police force. They protesters were pacified only after the police arrested the truck driver, Ram Prakash. The SHO, Rama Mandi, Baljinder Singh, said the body was handed over to the family after postmortem at the Civil Hospital this evening. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against the truck driver at Rama Mandi police station on the complaint of Inderjit Singh. |
MC contractors seek payment of dues
Jalandhar, September 27 The contractors claim that they have been daily making rounds to the offices of the Commissioner, audit officials and SEs of various branches demanding their outstanding payment, but to no avail. They have alleged that the officials have been giving them next dates for the past one month, but have not been honouring their commitments. The issue assumes significance as the Assembly polls are around the corner and the councillors are hell-bent on getting their work expedited so that they are able to win over the hearts of the residents of their respective wards. The contractors have targeted the authorities just a day after the Finance and Contracts Committee gave a go ahead to civic projects worth Rs 8 crore. The amount includes tenders for B&R works amounting to Rs 2.5 crore. Avtar Singh, president of the contractors’ union, said, “The non-payment of dues since mid-May has badly affected their financial cycle. How can we procure more material and pay the labour without getting payments for four months?” Vinod Gulati, another contractor, said, “After all, we too have our families and our daily needs. Stopping of payment for a month is understandable, but beyond this time really disturbing.” Vikas Bansal, also a contractor, fumed, “As per a clause of our agreement with the MC, we have to present the bills to the MC for various ongoing works every month and the MC has to make a payment in 15 days’ time.” Mayor Rakesh Rathour said he had asked the contractors to give him a week to 10 days’ time for arranging funds for payment. He claimed that payments of nearly Rs 8 crore were due. |

Youth eulogise Bhagat Singh but shy away from following in his footsteps
Jalandhar, September 27 Some of the youth were bold enough to confess that they do eulogise Bhagat Singh but lacked that ‘willpower and zeal’ to passionately follow their dreams. They added that usually the youth end up following a rat race in an attempt to prove their worth. “Whether it was the crusade of Anna Hazare for the Jan Lok Pal Bill, the media trials of Jessica Lal and Ruchika Girhotra, the youth despite playing a major role end up in a big rat race. There is a need to join hands against many corrupt forces in the country, which can actually bring a change in the society”, said Sarshar Verma a student. They also said that though the youth consider themselves as revolutionary but they lack that zeal to accomplish their dreams. “Wearing T-Shirts with martyr’s slogans and writing a few lines about him on Facebook will never bring a change in society. The youth need to follow the basic tenets of Bhagat Singh, instead of wasting time on frivolous issues”, said Alisha another college student who too has joined a Facebook community on Bhagat Singh. Surprisingly, there were many students who openly stated that they were not aware of anything about Bhagat Singh and his principles. Gaganbir Kaur, another student, said, “Of course, we are not talking about a second freedom struggle but then the youth has failed miserably in fulfilling even a single principle of the martyr. The youth is indulging in bribery, corruption, drug addiction and other petty issues, which is contrary to the dreams of Bhagat Singh”. If the youth actually follow the principles of the martyr, it will be a real tribute to him on his birth anniversary tomorrow. “It has been years since the politicians and various organisations have been celebrating his birth anniversary with loud commitment to bring a change but where is the change. The youth is going astray,” added the students. Student Speak Bhagat Singh’s ideology and principles to achieve his goal of freedom for the nation is in sync with the lifestyle and aspirations of the present youth. He is a hero for the youth and will continue to remain an iconic figure
forever. Generations will come and go, but the charisma and passion associated with Shaheed Bhagat Singh will remain the same. He represents not only the youth, but also their lifestyle and the zeal to fulfil their
dreams. This is one name which has indeed left an indelible mark on our minds. Right from our childhood to youth, it is Bhagat Singh’s do-or-die attitude which has always fascinated me. His enthusiasm for the freedom of the country still drives the youth
crazy We are proud to have a role model like Bhagat Singh. Else these days it is hard to find even one personality who one can think of emulating. Moreover, Bhagat Singh is synonomous with revolution. I think the youth believe that they have the power of bringing about a
