Moving along…Chupke Chupke
Attired in a simple safari suit, ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali, in Chandigarh at JW Marriot for the launch of singer-turned-actor Jasbir Jassi's album of Punjabi film Khushiyan, may not look like the quintessential ghazal singer, but there is no denying the fact that ghazal and Ghulam Ali are synonymous with each other.
And that is not only in Pakistan but also in his second home, India, where ghazal aficionados continue to envy the neighboring nation for this inimitable talent! As fans swarm him-somebody wants to touch his feet, another wants a picture with him — we wonder whether he receives the same adulation across the Radcliffe line as well! And he takes no offence to our petulant query? In fact, this is the question he has been asked time and again; way back in 1980 at Mumbai too he faced the same volley. And like then, today also his answer is the same — "After all I started from there. My country accepted me, showered me with love and prepared me for the world at large." India, of course, remains special. While he is upbeat about his recent concerts with our very own ghazal king Jagjit Singh, with greater fondness he recalls the concert at Kolkata where he regaled listeners with a Punjabi song pata laga ke mienu hundi ki judaai jado da mera maahi ruseya. He reminisces, "There I was apprehensive about the response to a Punjabi song, but they asked me to sing it three times over! That's when I realised that music has no language." Of course, he observes that in ghazal gayaki poetry is very important. So is the manner of rendering it with feeling. But has it stooped touching the emotional chord among listeners? He nods, "Of course, today distractions are many. To appreciate beautiful things of life, you need junoon; must have ishq for it." In Pakistan too, he shares, that the tribe of ghazal lovers is dwindling but the only bright side is that Urdu is being taught and people are well-versed with the language. After all, he adds, "If you don't understand what words like visaal and firaq mean, you can't plumb its depths". Thus he makes a conscious effort to explain the meaning of difficult words for the benefit of the uninitiated. And for their sake again, the legendary singer bears in mind the words of his ustads — the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Ustad Barkat Ali Khan, who beseeched him to sing in a relaxed manner. Without doubt he holds his great ustads in high esteem and shares that he has never heard singing quite close to theirs. And it's not just classical training, but each word of theirs for him is the gospel truth. Music indeed is the ultimate truth whose purity he has never felt pressurised to compromise. He has nothing against new forms of music or even platforms like Coke Studio. On singing in films particularly Bollywood - who can forget his memorable number Chupke Chupke Raat Din from Nikaah — he quips, "I am a hit without films." Seriously, having tasted phenomenal success how does he feel? He says with humility, "I want to bow down in thanksgiving." And with similar sentiments he wants to disseminate whatever he has imbibed. His sons Aamir Ghulam Ali and Nazar Ghulam Ali anyway are keeping the torch of ghazal singing aflame! nonika@tribunemail.com

Culture bound
Well, the music launch of a movie can't get bigger than this - ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali present at the event! In Chandigarh for the launch of Punjabi flick Khushiyan, at JW Marriott-35, Ghulam Ali enamoured his fans.
"Everything needs to be in rhythm for one to appreciate life," says Ghulam Ali, who remembered his mother at the launch. "Remembering her blesses everything and everyone, so I make it a point to mention her name at the launch," says Ghulam Ali, who appreciated the assembled singers, lyricists and film-makers on Wednesday. Khushiyan, which launches popular Punjabi pop singer Jasbir Jassi as an actor, has music by Jaidev Kumar. "I was offered roles in movies but before this film, I could not relate to any role that was offered," says Jassi, who took training in acting for the film. A film that has 'family bonding' for a theme, Jassi plays an introvert who realises that money does not play much of a role when it comes to happiness or emotions. With seven songs in total, this movie has a 'shabad' by legendary ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh. And, also, two item numbers — one by Ankita Shorey (Miss India International) and another by Gurpreet Ghuggi. "The feel of the film is total Punjabi," says US-based director Tirlok Malik. "The film explores that planning in life is one thing, but, at the same time, let's not fail to recognise that life is happening right here, right now," says Malik. While, the immigrants embrace the big American dream, they are far from embracing its culture, thus cultural shift makes for the plot of Khushiyan. The film due to be released on October 14, happens to be veteran actor Vivek Shauq's last film. It also brings together artistes from Punjab Jasbir Jassi, Jaidev Kumar and Gurpreet Ghuggi whose connection goes back in time. "It only fills my heart with pride to see Jasbir start a new innings; I have shared my struggling days with him," say Ghuggi, who happens to have given acting tips to debutante actor Jasbir. On his own, Jasbir is his unassuming self who asks for not much but people to watch his film and share the feedback! mona@tribunemail.com

First step in Pollywood!
Each time Bollywood steps into Punjabi cinema; it surely is a subject that sets several tongues rolling. That is exactly what Sirphire does. After his period films like Baba Banda Bahadhur and Kirpan-The Honour, film director Harjit Singh Ricky brings together Monica Bedi, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Preet Harpal, Gurleen Chopra and Rimpy Prince in a youth-oriented Punjabi film. In Chandigarh for the official launch of the film, Ricky, along with the cast, spoke about the flick and everything else attached to it.
Stepping in with the director, Priyanshu was completely comfortable in his Bengali skin. "We are actors, so drawing boundaries with work is something that we tend to avoid," he opened to a question on movement from Bengali cinema to the land of five rivers. Despite working in an award-winning film Florida Road alongside Ashmit Patel, Priyanshu is upbeat about taking his baby steps into the world of Punjabi cinema. "The story was the one thing that totally attracted me. It's one of those characters which you tend to perform better when you relate to it," he says. The basic plot of the movie revolves around youngsters, come to Chandigarh to have their dose of fun. "It is only one incident that changes their lives for ever and turns them into men from boys," shares Ricky. The director feels that Punjab is less receptive to experiments. "We always have to keep the business in mind," laughs Ricky. During the interaction about the film, the wait for Monica starts to get us shifting places. "She will be here is five minutes," we are informed. Focus shifts back to Priyanshu. With not many films in his kitty, the most obvious question was floated. "I am much laid back when it comes to films and like to associate with good scripts," he informs. With Pinjar, Tum Bin and Dil Ka Rishta, we could not agree more. The wait continues. After pursuing dramatics and news reading in college days, for Priyanshu, it has been more of a natural transition to films. "I have just wrapped up Rajdhani Express. It's more of a thriller and tracks the journey of a train under a terrorist," he shares. Finally, perfectly in tune with being fashionably late, arrives Monica Bedi. Wearing an embroidered Anarkali, she looked every bit of a dazzling star. "In my career, I have done all kinds of cinema, but never got an opportunity to work in Punjabi cinema," she smiles. Looking for blessings and support from the people of Punjab, this Hoshiarpur-born lass has stepped into Sirphire after doing films in Nepali, Bengali and Tamil. "It's really surprising how big the South-Indian film industry is," she shares. Believing that no work is too small, she will be playing a typical Punjabi kudi in the film. "My character is that of a simple, sober girl, who runs into the bad boys," she laughs. Punjabi cinema and music go hand in hand. "The item number in the movie will be by Sunidhi Chauhan," shares Jatinder Shah, the music director of the film. "Josh main hosh nahi khona chaiye," the director wraps up the message of the story. vasudha@tribunemail.com |

Star track
Bollywood heartthrob Shahid Kapoor is all excited about his next release Mausam. Shahid says that he loves acting, and that movies are something he has been addicted to since childhood. Here is his list of favorite actors and films… Film fixation
I love watching movies. Even as a kid, I seldom missed a film. It's something which is in my blood. I have grown up watching films - be it regional, Hindi or Hollywood films. Sometimes, I and my friends used to gang up to watch films together. We would get VCRs and VCDs, and have a good time. Dancing away to glory
Dance has always been my passion. I loved dancing as a kid, so my parents enrolled me in Shiamak's dance school. I have performed in numerous stage shows. I feel dancing is something which can make you forget everything. I enjoy dancing a lot. Bollywood favourites
I have been a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan. I have seen all of his films. My favourites are Sholay, Kaalia, Zanjeer, Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony andChupke Chupke. I love Dharmendra, the macho man, a great actor of his time, who excelled in comedy as well as action. I loved watching him in Sholay, Chupke Chupke and Seeta Aur Geeta. Apart from them, I am an SRK fan too. Talking Hollywood
The Shawshank Redemption is one of the smartest movies ever made. I loved Tim Robbins' performance in the film. The direction was first rate. I enjoyed Unfaithful for Diane Lane's sensuality. I've also loved Braveheart, Kill Bill, Godfather - the list is endless. Recently, I loved Inception, Avatar and The Karate Kid. Favourite H-town actors
My all-time favourites from Hollywood classics are Gregory Peck, Peter Sellers, Al Pacino and then Sylvester Stallone. I don't know how many times I have watched Rocky just for Sylvester. I also love Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Robin Williams, and Will Smith. Bollywood's Gen Next
Everyone is talented. When I saw Ranveer Singh in Band Baaja Baraat, I felt that he was a born actor. Even Deepika and Anushka are really good. There's now a team of very good directors in Bollywood, who are ready to experiment with cinema. Shahid's Mausam also marks his father's directorial debut. The film is, therefore, very special to him. The film releases on 16th September, 2011. — HRM

Zooming in on Ra.One
Ra.One's music was launched with a grand show featuring sizzling performances by Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Kareena Kapoor. Post the music launch, the actors get up close and personal with us.
And for the first time ever, Arjun Rampal spoke about the movie, Shah Rukh spoke about the love story, and Kareena talked about her hot heroes. Here is all you ever wanted to know about the music and about the biggest release this year! Arjun Rampal on Ra.One and the music I have done four films with Shah Rukh Khan. We have so much love between us that on screen we turn out to be enemies: I killed him in OSO, in KANK, I had a soft corner for his wife, and in Ra.One, I play the villain. I cannot even tell you what Ra.One will do to G.One because he is so evil. It all comes down to matters of the heart which are very complicated. I cannot talk about my look right now because I want people to experience Ra.One in his three-dimensional glory on Diwali/Dusshera. I love the way this film has drawn from Indian mythology. I think the music is great. I love Chhamak challo and my chhamak chhallo is obviously my wife, Mehr. Shah Rukh Khan on the music My son Aryan and I would listen to Akon's Smack That and we liked the song. I later realised that it is not a song you listen to with your son because it is about copulation. Anyway, Vishal-Shekhar thought of getting Akon on board and they told me they would write a song and make him sing in Hindi and that it would suit his style. So all the credit goes to them and I am so happy with the results. Vishal-Shekhar work very hard but they have a lot of fun doing what they do. Shah Rukh Khan on Kareena I think she is the topmost actor in India. She is incredibly white, incredibly sexy, and incredibly beautiful. I went to her and she agreed to do the film on the condition that she would not have to do any stunts. I would like to do every film with her but she does not have time for me. She has to work with the other Khans and actors in the industry and will be free only after one-and-a-half years! She is the perfect Chhamak chhalo. Ra.One has a very sweet love story and Kareena has done a great job in the movie. I think she is a super heroine! Kareena on G.One and the movie I feel I have been very lucky with the kind of roles I have been getting and the people who choose to work with me. Ra.One has a very sweet love story in the second half. You all know about SRK's G.One but the real guy is actually Shekhar and he is my husband. He has very curly hair and is very cute. He is sweet, loving, and has a big heart. He keeps proposing to me in different ways till I say 'Yes'. The common thing between G.One and Shekhar is that they both love me and both of them are hot. After all, my choice has to be hot! SRK on allegations that the movie is similar to other movies See, every superhero movie is similar and the same. The premise is always the same and there is a superhero and a super villain! I have worked in Bollywood for twenty years and I assure you that Ra.One is unlike anything Hindi cinema has seen or experienced before. Every day, for the past five years, my team of 5,000-10,000 experts and technicians have been working hard to ensure that the film gets better and is absolutely remarkable. All the work in the film has been done by Indian companies. Many Indian companies have done graphics and animation for Hollywood films and now they have played a huge role in making Ra.One what it is. Inshallah, the film does as well as we want it to do because we have worked incredibly hard. In fact, Anubhav's friend from Hollywood called him after seeing the rushes and could not believe that we, in India, have made such a film. He praised the effects and the look of the film. SRK's personal favourites I personally love Batman because he saves the world at night and is a playboy during the day. I would love to live like that and have all the fun in the world; it would be my ideal life. —HRM

What a ride!
What a Kodak moment it was - 5,000 cycles dotted Chandigarh roads during the first edition of the Cyclothon last year. Also in the frame were volunteers, competitors, celebrities and cheerleaders. This year will be a repeat of the last, but with more action, more participants and more fun!
The second edition of Chandigarh Cyclothon will further help popularise cycling in the city. "And it will give mileage to city tourism. Chandigarh has the best roads for cyclothons. The two-pronged strategy is to promote cycling culture for short distance travelling and show the world what the city is famous for - architecture and wide roads," says Ram Niwas, Home Secretary, Chandigarh. He adds that the city roads are best suited for such events because they have special slip roads for them. This year, as many as 7,000 people are expected to participate in the event, which means a steep rise of 20-25 per cent. The event will be telecast live on TV 18. "People saw what a success it was last year. After a great experience, I am sure a lot of people will get themselves registered this time," says Vijay Bhardwaj, head of research, TV 18. Cycling is also the world's fastest growing sport, the reason why it is being promoted in the city. The prize money for the winner of the competitive category is Rs 5 lakh. For those who do not own a cycle and yet want to be part of the event, cycles are available on rent as well. On a security of Rs 350, Hero cycles will be provided to contestants. Says OP Munjal, Chairman and MD, Hero Cycles, "The bigger objective behind promoting cycling is to keep the environment clean, which is possible only if it is considered a sport by youngsters; the idea is to save and value fuel. We also want to promote it as a fitness activity." Therefore, the event will be promoted the most in the Panjab University. Chandigarh is among only the six cities to host the event in India. On September 25, the 4.2-kilometre lap will begin at the Chandigarh Police headquarters and end at the Leisure Valley. National-level cyclists will also be a part of the rally. So, are you geared up for the Kodak moment? Say cheese!

green thumb You built a good house with lots of planning to make the house most livable. But at times, things go wrong. For example, if the windows are directly facing the sun, in the winter, when it is required, the sun changes its direction but the summer becomes a nightmare. What to do then? The only answer to this is growing of plants. But there are two problems. One, we don't want to hide the beauty of the architectural features and two; we also do not want to block the view of the outside garden from inside the house. So, the next option is growing of vines and climbers. The weak twigs of vines can be trained to develop any kind of growth and the growth can be developed along the architectural lines without hiding the features. The climbers are known to require very less space on the ground. Another beauty about growing them is their capacity to grow to almost any heights. They are also easy to control where access is not required just by changing their direction. One can also train some fragrant climber along the window to get fragrance indoors. Honey suckle and Jhumka bel are good examples of such creepers. In case one wants to hang a part of the climber down the sill, then Vernonia or curtain climber could be grown. It does not, however, bear significant flowers. At times, one wants to plant a climber along the window where the sun remains only for a short spell of time. In that case climber like Clerodendron could be selected. It is an evergreen climber with deep green leaves and bears deep red blooms in clusters. The bunches fill the growth completely when in bloom. (Narula is a Chandigarh-based horticulturist) |

GET PHYSICAL Adho Mukha Svanasana Let's look for the meaning of this asana first. Adho Mukh means facing downwards and Svana implies a dog. This pose equates to a dog that stretches himself with its front and back legs. Therefore this name has been correlated to this position. In the downward facing dog pose, you build up strength in the upper arms and give space and opening in the back, neck, chest, hips and shoulders. If you let your ankles sink nicely to the floor in this asana, you stretch the calves at the same time. In this pose your body forms a triangular pyramidal shape. Because the head is lower than the pelvis, this pose is often classified as an inversion posture. In this way, downward facing dog pose calms the brain and helps relieve stress, mild depression, headache, insomnia and fatigue. To start with, get to your hands and knees with your wrists underneath the shoulders and the knees underneath the hips. Curl the toes under and push back, raising the hips and straightening the legs. Spread the fingers and ground down from the forearms into the fingertips. Outwardly rotate the upper arms broadening the collarbones. Let the head hang; move the shoulder blades away from the ears towards the hips. Your torso goes toward your legs so the head hangs freely and more toward the floor. Eventually, the crown of your head may touch the floor. Engage the quadriceps strongly to take the weight off the arms, making this a resting pose. Rotate the thighs inward, keep the tail high and sink your heels towards the floor. Do not step the feet toward the hands in this position in order the get the heels to the floor. This will happen eventually as the muscles lengthen. As you work in the pose, continually observe the distribution of your weight on each part of your feet, on your hands and your fingers. Keep equal weight on both sides of the body and in all parts of hand or foot. Hold the pose anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds and breathe normally. Over time extend the time in which you hold this pose. As you are able to work in the pose for longer periods of time you will gain in strength and in stretch. Eventually you should be able to hold and continually work in the pose for at least five minutes. Regular practice of this pose also prevents the development of osteoporosis problem. This is especially beneficial for menopausal woman, as it helps ease the symptoms associated with menopause. Once you have mastered this pose, you could try a slight variation. Inhale, and lift one leg up at a time, so it is in line with your torso. Hold the leg up for a few seconds, exhale, and bring it down. After this repeat the same with other leg. This is an inverted posture and should be avoided by the people suffering from high blood pressure or a heart condition. It should not be practiced when the wrists are sensitive or injured. Dressed to chill
She worships style and is a 'brandaholic'. She makes heads turn, not twice but more than that. Ashima Chhabra, the young lady who is pursuing her master's degree in mass communication and journalism from Panjab University, definitely has a style mantra of her own. Your sense of style is… Anything that is comfortable. One should not follow fashion blindly; rather one must have an individualistic style. The latest addition to your wardrobe… A Louis Vuitton handbag and a pair of jeans from Diesel. Brand crazy or street pick-ups? Totally brand crazy; I shop only for good brands. That's it. My style icon would be… Katrina Kaif and Aishwarya Rai. These females have something about them that makes them stand out in the crowd of other celebrities. Who is the worst dressed celebrity? Vidya Balan. I mean she needs a top to bottom makeover by a good designer. What look do you prefer - sporty, chic or glamorous? Glamorous; but it should be a style of your own. One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension… The flared trousers; for God's sake they are an 80's look and this is the 21st century. We have better trends of our own. Your take on accessories… Accessories are a must have and are very essential. One must have a good collection of some amazing pieces. What boosts your confidence level? Dressing and carrying myself properly in public certainly gives me a boost. (As told to Sabia Talwar) |

Recipe-rich generation
Today's mothers are actually better cooks than their own and don't just rely on fast food and ready meals to feed their families as is believed, says a new survey. Modern women know 25 per cent more recipes than mothers of the 1970s and '80s did, and also like experimenting with exotic foreign meals.
The survey found that they still favour British cuisine, such as roast dinners and chicken casserole, but also prepare more difficult international dishes like Mexican fajitas, Chinese stir fry and chicken tikka masala. Thirty or so years ago, mums' staple dishes included meat and two vegetables, chops, or shepherd's pie. Modern women typically know 21 recipes off by heart, compared to 17 for their mothers. "The findings completely dispel the myth that today's mums aren't particularly into their food, and have other priorities they consider more important than cooking," spokesperson Emma Gray said. The study of 1,000 mothers across two generations was carried out to launch Birmingham Food Fest which opens next month. — ANI

Tribute to a genius
As a tribute to legendary Punjabi theatre artiste Gursharan Singh, the Suchetak Rang Manch is organising the annual three-day Gursharan Singh Naat Utsav from September 15 to 17, which also coincides with his 82nd birthday on September 16.
While expressing gratitude to North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, who have partly sponsored the event, acclaimed actor-director Anita Shabdeesh said the government should come forward and support such events. Here is the schedule of the plays to be staged at the Randhawa auditorium from 6.30 pm onwards. Khetan Da Putt by Lok Kala Manch Mandi MullanPur Dakha Written and directed by Harkesh Choudhry and based on a true story, the play depicts the resolve of a school teacher, also a poet, who fights for the poor peasantry against the land mafia. Lal Kaner by Suchetka Rang Manch Mohali Adapted in Punjabi by Shadeesh, Guru Rabindranath Tagores' play Lal Kaner reveals lesser-known facts about gold mine workers. These workers have been uprooted from their villages and have been rehabilitated in new colonies, where they find the environment claustrophobic and suffocating. Considering the present-day corporate world's exploitation of natural resources of the poor countries, this play becomes even more relevant. Baba Bolda Hai and Mitti Da Mull by Chandigarh School Of Drama The concluding day is dedicated to the unique natak style pioneered by Gursharan Singh, as both the plays written and directed by him will be staged. During the early 1980s, the period of Punjab crisis, when all sane voices were being silenced, Gursharan Singh's lone voice challenged those who in the name of religion tried to divide people. With the courage of conviction and unparalleled energy, he addressed the people of Punjab through these plays. Similarly, the second play Mitti da Mul is a saga of a poor potter and is based on a novel by the same name written by Om Prakash Gasso.

The year ahead
If your birthday is September 15...
Your talent for bringing out the best in children, animals and plants should be applauded. Unfortunately, many people take such gifts for granted. You will team up with a romantic partner who will appreciate you. You have strong attachments to home and family. The one and five equaling six, provide the sort of energy that makes you an excellent parent or a teacher. Business: Go for teamwork or have a meeting with your boss or partner. If you're going to dig in your heels, provide a reason (or several) why as well as an alternate plan. Career: Stop following unrealistic dreams and think of what you really can do; otherwise you risk compromising all the effort you've made to date. Those born after 1980 will have new energy in projects they wish to undertake. Education: If you step back, you can see the bigger picture. If you pay too much attention to the details, you will lose your focus. If you cannot trust others to handle some of the burden, you must trust fate to carry the load. Family: Demands may seem almost 'unreasonable' and with your 'natural energy' being down and your health vulnerable, you may need to be clear and ask for assistance 'up front' from members. Friendship: You may make new friends with 'highly career-driven' personalities. Their good networking skill and contacts will be helpful for you. Health: Those who are suffering from weakness and any kind of illness should eat more fruits and green vegetables. Generally, you are susceptible to diseases during season changes as you tend to neglect health. Love: An uncharacteristically serious attitude early October can leave you feeling isolated or disappointed. It's clear that you need a new place or face to reconnect with the spirit of play that's so close to your heart. Travel: It is time to fill out custom's forms, file visas with the appropriate agencies and exchange your money. General: You'll receive some important news but you'll deal with it well, thanks to the advice of someone who likes and respects you. If you are an employee, your superior's attitude will annoy you, even if this was caused by your own error. Mood: Serious and mature. Compatible signs: Gemini, Scorpio, Pisces. Lucky colors: Cornflower blue, forest green. Lucky days: Monday. Lucky numbers: 2, 8, 12, 28, 82.
Neha Uberoi (September 15, 1985, Mumbai) appeared in two Bollywood films Dus Kahaniyaan and Woodstock Villa. Neha is also the member of International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy Of Film & Television, Noida film City. The number 6 and 2 representing Venus and Moon ensure good career in the glamour world.
