Youth killed in accident
Protesters attempt to torch bus

Kurali, September 14
The Chandigarh-Kharar national highway near Kurali remained blocked for an hour after agitated residents of the area tried to torch a Haryana roadways bus in protest against the death of a 27-year-old boy in a road accident.

The deceased was identified as Rakesh Kumar, who worked in a factory at Baddi. He died after being hit by a speeding Haryana roadways bus near Khalsa School in Kurali last night.

However, the police managed to control the situation and diverted the traffic via Morinda.

According to the police, the accident took place around 9.30 pm when Rakesh had come to a market on his motorcycle. The bus hit him from rear and crushed to death. Soon after the accident the bus driver and the conductor fled from the spot.

After the accident, the irked residents smashed the windowpanes of the bus before trying to set it on fire.

The passengers were safe as they alighted from the bus before the protesters gathered there. A case against the bus driver had been registered and further investigation was on, a police official said.

Missing youth found dead

Dera Bassi: Body of a missing youth of Amlala village was found in a well of the village today. As per information, Gaurav (20), alias Gunny, who was mentally upset for the past some time, was missing since September 9.

The hopes of the family members of the victim ended today when they saw the body of Gaurav. The police has sent the body for the postmortem and said the reason of death could be identified after examining the autopsy report.

Factory worker electrocuted

A factory worker was electrocuted in a factory on the Barwala road yesterday. The deceased had been identified as Narayan Shah, hailing from Chhapra district in Bihar. As per reports, Narayan was employed in RBL polypacks factory in Saidpura.

He was working on a machine when he fell on an electric motor and received a fatal shock from a wire. He died on the spot. The police had registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC.

20-yr-old run over by train

Kalka: A 20-year-old youth was run over by a train today on the Kalka-Chandigarh rail track. According to information, the youth was crushed to death under the train number 2UK near Model Town, Pinjore, around 1 pm. A railway employee informed the GRP Railway Police, which rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Civil Hospital, Kalka, for the autopsy.

The police said the deceased seemed to be a migrant labourer.

Body found near Banur

Banur, September 14
An unidentified body was found near the Banur-Rajpura road this morning. The body had been kept in the Civil Hospital, Rajpura, for 72 hours for identification.

The deceased seems to be 30-year-old. He wore a brown coloured shirt and trousers. The police had registered a case. — OC

Warrants against ASI for skipping hearing

A local court today issued bailable warrants against Chandigarh Police ASI Surinder Singh in the Burail jailbreak case as he failed to appear in court for evidence.

Meanwhile, Babbar Khalsa International terrorists Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora were brought from the Tihar jail for hearing amid tight security.

Defence counsel TS Sudan said Hawara and Bheora were brought here as there was some technical fault in the video-conferencing system. They were presently lodged in the Tihar jail to face trial in the New Delhi blasts in 2004. They had already been convicted in the Beant Singh assassination case.

Hawara and his associates Jagtar Singh Tara and Bheora had escaped after digging a 104-foot-long tunnel in the jail in 2004. An undertrial, Devi Singh, who had escaped with them, was still absconding.

Chandigarh Police registers three cases in a single day

Chandigarh, September 14
The police today registered three separate cases, wherein a victim had been duped by convincing her that she had won a lottery and others defrauded by offering them loans.

Avtar Saha of Sector 45 alleged that she received a phone call, asking her to deposit Rs 15,000 in account number 0107002100141520 of Punjab National Bank, Sector 17, for getting the lottery prize money of Rs 15 lakh.

She claimed that she again received phone call, asking her to deposit Rs 35,000 in the same account to get the money. She added that after visiting the bank, it was found that the account had already been frozen.

No lottery was found to have been drawn in her name.

A case of cheating under Section 420 of the IPC was registered against Ehsan Shah and the case was under investigation.

In the other two cases, residents were cheated by luring them for providing them a loan.

Ishwar Dutt of Jind in Haryana reported that he read about loan being provided with four per cent as the rate of interest in a newspaper.

The complainant said he approached the office of Financial Freedom Services at 117, Sector 17, where he met Shweta Sharma, who encouraged him to take a loan of Rs 1.25 crore.

The complainant alleged she demanded Rs 1,37,875 as consultancy fee. He further said she and others neither provided him a loan, nor returned the amount.

A case of cheating under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC was registered at the Sector-17 police station and the case was under investigation.

Vijay Kumar and Neelam Devi of Burail alleged that Financial Freedom Investment at 104, Sector 17, encouraged them to take a loan. They added that the company took Rs 9 lakh from them.

They further alleged that the company neither provided them a loan, nor returned their money.

The police registered a case under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC at the Sector-17 police station and started investigations in the case.

Youth nabbed for making fake profile of girl

The cyber crime wing of the Punjab State Crime Branch, Mohali, has arrested a Chandigarh resident for creating a fake profile of a girl on Facebook. The accused has been identified as 25-year-old Nitin Arora, a resident of Sector 44, Chandigarh, and a software professional working in web marketing.

A case under various sections has been registered on the complaint of Sonia Sharma (name changed) who is a BDS student at a college in Mohali. She complained that someone had created a fake ID in her name on Facebook and was misusing it to tarnish her image. The accused was also chatting with her friends and using filthy language.

Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, SSP, State Crime Branch, said the accused was interested in the girl, who was earlier residing in the same locality, but she did not respond to him. He then created her profile and also uploaded her pictures. He used to send obscene messages and posts through this profile.

The SSP said there was a general tendency to make fake profiles, especially of girls. He advised Internet-users to share minimum information on social networking sites and also verify the identity of the person before adding him or her to the friend list.

One killed, another hurt in wall collapse

One person died and another got injured when a part of an old wall collapsed during construction being carried out in Phase II here today.

According to the police, Tarlochan Singh (35) died on the spot while the injured person was admitted to a hospital. Tarlochan was providing a small channel in the wall while standing on a wooden platform. A part of the wall fell on him and even the platform on which he was standing broke. He died on the spot.

The police has initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC in this regard.

Sumit Dalal, Vikas, Ravi and Shyam bagged the top honours in 9:41.19 seconds.PU Campus team consisting of Jashandeep Singh, Pankil Sharma, Angad Singh and Vivek Yadav completed the race in 9:48.33 seconds to finish second and SGGS College team of Gurpreet Singh, Sukhjinder , Gagandeep Singh and Shivroop secured third place in 11:14.46 seconds.

GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, overcame PU Campus in the ongoing Panjab University Inter-College Football (men) A-Division Tournament being held at PU grounds, here today.

In the first league match, Ludhiana college defeated the hosts by 2-0.Navej Singh drew the first blood in the 8th minute of the game while Jagdeep Singh converted the awarded spot kick into a goal during the 25th minute to seal the team’s victory.

In the second match of the day, SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, defeated SGGS College, Sector 26, by 6-0. Puneet scored two goals in 14th and 56th minute while Bali Gagandeep struck thrice in 29th,59th and 73rd minute. Varinder Singh contributed one goal in the 58th minute of the game.

Local hockey star Rajpal Singh in city

Local Hockey star and captain of the Indian Hockey team, Rajpal Singh, today reached here after winning the first Asian Cup Hockey Tournament, held in China. The player visited his almamatter Shivalik Public School and Panjab University as soon as he reached the city. He also went to his Indian Oil office.

“It is a proud moment for us to win the cup that too after defeating Pakistan in the final. The players are very proud of it and are looking forward to achieve new heights in the upcoming Olympic qualifier”elated Rajpal said .

The player also opposed the step of the Indian Sports Ministry, to award players with a cash prize of Rs 25,000.The player demanded more money on behalf of the team as according to him the player deserved more.

“We deserve more than this, the players have given their best. The government should increase the award money. In cricket, the board awards the players with what they deserve and we want the same only” said Rajpal. The 28-year-oldplayer also praised new coach Michael Nobbs, for whom this was the first assignment.

In the second match of the day, Khalsa College for Women, Sidhwan Khurd, defeated PG Government College for Girls, Sector 42, by one turn and seven points while PG Government College for Girls, Sector 42, played a draw against Government College for Women, Ludhiana, with 9-9 points each.

In the last match of the day, Khalsa College for Women, Sidhwan Khurd, defeated Dev Samaj College for Women by one turn and five points.

In the (B-Division) match, MBBG GRGC Girls College, Mansowal, defeated SMSK College for Women, Miani (Hoshiarpur), by one turn and six points while SHS Memorial College for Women, Chella, Maksuspur, defeated MLBG Girls College, Tapprian Khurd, by one turn and seven points.

Double delight for city lad

Akshit Mahajan, a student of S D College, Sector 32, Chandigarh, won the men's single and men's double title representing Panchkula district in the 45th Haryana State Badminton Championship, which concluded at Sonepat.

Akshit while playing an outstanding game outplayed his opponent Neeraj of Sonipat in the men's single final with a score of 21-09 and 21-11. In the doubles too Akshit pairing with Sachin Garg of Panchkula combined well to beat Ravi and Rajat of Sonipat with the score of 21-16 and 22-20.

Neeraj Ahuja of Panchkula won the master's +35 single title by beating Vijay of Hisar in the final with a score of 21-10,21-16. In the doubles, Vivek Dhankar and Munish Dutt of Panchkula, also won the silver medal losing the final match to Surinder and Varinder of Bhivani 12-21.14-21.

In the veteran's double, Jatinder Mahajan and Rajinder Pahwa of Panchkula won the Haryana state title by beating Sanjay Sapra and MN Kalra of Faridabad with a score of 21-14 and 23-21.

Daksha also of Panchkula won the women's double title with partner Ekta of Faridabad. They beat Komal and Lalita of Sonipat with a score of 21-09,21-12.

In the girls’ U-19 category, Jagriti of Panchkula won the silver medal. She lost in the final to Ekta of Faridabad with the score of 14-21,19-21.

Similarly, in the boys’ U-19 doubles, Ketan and Ravinder of Panchkula won the silver medal. They lost to Neeraj and Rajat of Sonepat with a score of 18-21,14-21.

Over all Panchkula players won five gold and three silver medals in the Senior Haryana State Badminton Championship.

Indian team clinch four medals

Indian badminton (junior) team brought laurels after winning four medals out of five events in the recently held Youth Commonwealth Games at Isle-of-Man, the UK, from September 7 to 13.

The team including, PV Sindhu (gold in women singles), Sameer Verma (silver in men singles), Srikanth and Manisha (silver in mix doubles) and Srikanth and Hema Nagendra (bronze in men doubles), won laurels under the guidance of local coach Surinder Mahajan.

Surinder Mahajan gives coaching to students at the badminton centre of Panjab University. He has conducted a one-month camp in Lucknow for the team.

“I am very happy with my players’ performance in the competition” said elated Mahajan. In the final, PV Sindhu defeated Malaysian player in straight game. Sameer lost in a well-contested match to Malaysian player in three games. — TNS
