Campaigning resumes for SGPC elections
Moga, September 2 However, the tempers of the SAD leadership are still high against the Congress-led UPA Government. The Akali leadership alleges that the Congress is directly interfering in the religious affairs of the Sikhs, which is not acceptable to the community. Jathedar Tota Singh, senior vice-president of the SAD, who is an aspirant for the post of the SGPC chief, said it was a well planned strategy of some politicians of the opposition parties to interrupt in the election process, which has failed as all the Akali factions and representatives of the community irrespective of political affiliations came together on the issue against the political gimmicks of the Congress. Had the Union Government not clarified its stand today, the issue could have led to widespread ramifications among the Sikh community across the nation and the globe leading to chaos. “Whosoever has misled the High Court and played the mischief with the sentiments of the Sikh community on the serious issue, which is pending before the court, should be punished as per the provisions of the law,” he said. He said the campaigning for the 170 seats also suddenly came to a halt after the yesterday’s episode. “All the candidates and the political parties will have to reschedule its programme,” he said. Jathedar revealed that he planned to address rallies in the Ludhiana district along with the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister on Saturday, which would not be possible for him under this situation. “I will have to push the candidates to move out in the remote rural areas to begin campaign again in the Moga district explaining them of the political developments and similarly all other senior leaders will have to keep the candidates on toes for electioneering,” he said. Gurmail Singh, candidate of the SAD from the Dharamkot area, said he has begun campaigning in the evening today but his schedule has been disturbed by the episode yesterday. The official machinery was also confused over the controversy and kept guessing whether the model code of conduct of the SGPC elections was in progress or not. The tehsildar of Dharamkot JS Brar said it was a wait and watch situation for him, which was finally cleared in the evening. |

District Health Officer Dr Raghubir Singh Randhawa said here today 136 ANMs (auxiliary nurse midwife) posted at the sub-centres of the Health Department in the district had been given training to identify and screen the cases of hypertension, stroke etc and educate the elderly against the lifestyle diseases besides referring them to the hospital here. As many as 10 doctors from the district had also been trained for the implementation of these programmes, he added. He said glucometers to measure the blood sugar levels had also been distributed among the ANMs at the sub-centres while the training to use the same would be given on September 5 by a team arriving from Delhi.
