Theatre is a true reflection of society: Dhillon

Bathinda, August 28
Theatre is a true reflection of the society bringing unshared emotions and sensitivity into spotlight. With an ever-expanding ambit of creativity in terms of electronic media, theatre artistes are getting newer platforms. This was stated by a noted playwright and theatre personality Jagdev Singh Dhillon, the director of the Dev Lok Theatre.

Dhillon was here with his group to showcase his play ‘Deewar de uss paar’ on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Ram Saroop Ankhi at the Balwant Gargi open stadium in the Rose Garden.

Dhillon has been into theatre since 1999. His group has performed as many as 16 plays written by him besides several plays penned by Ajmer Singh Aulakh and other celebrated writers.

A regular at Baba Farid mela, Dhillon’s group has performed at the Mela Gadri Babeyan Da – a cult festival of communists, the Tagore Theatre and in parts of Ganganagar and the Malwa region of Punjab.

A disciple of Pali Bhupinder Singh (Es Chowk Toun Shehar Disda Hai famed), Dhillon is a government teacher in Punjabi. “I pursue my passion and the best part is that my family too shares the love for theatre,” says Dhillon, whose wife and two daughters are also as dedicated to the creativity as he is.

It was his family that persuaded him to set up a theatre at his home town in Jaito where he stages plays produced by him, twice a year. Dhillon’s team has 10 senior actors and 15 children.

His plays Gaatha Vagde Paniyan Di and Zindagi have won him accolades. While Gaatha Vagde Paniyan Di talked about a family that borrows loan to send one son abroad and eventually fragments, Zindagi portrayed the dilemma of a family where a eunuch child is born after 12 years of marriage.

“Zindagi was praised wherever it was staged. Translated into Hindi as Kinnar Katha, the play is widely appreciated and has won gold medals at all the universities in Punjab,” Dhillon adds.

Dhillon aims at taking the theatre to greater heights while garnering support from the society. It was after a long gap that his group performed in Bathinda this evening. Earlier, he had presented Balwant Gargi’s play Loha Kutt.

PTU college to come up on PSEB Adarsh school land
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, August 28
The Adarsh Senior Secondary School at village Nandgarh has conceded 15 acres of its land for setting up a Punjab Institute of Technology (PIT) - a constituent college under the Punjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar.

The land has been transferred in the name of the Registrar, PTU, Jalandhar and the construction is expected to begin in the first week of October.

The school is among 10 schools of the Punjab State Education Board (PSEB) that run across the state.

Principal Baldev Sing Dullet said in lieu of the 15 acres, the PIT would reserve one seat in each discipline and five seats in every department for the students of his school. “We will share playgrounds with the college students,” he said.

The PTU has elaborate plans of developing PITs on the pattern of IITs in the state. The proposal is to set up 11 PITs in the state at an investment of Rs 120 to Rs 150 crore.

Sources in the university, however, point out that the varsity had been unable to fill even a single seat this year.

“The PTU advertised seats for MBA at the PIT, Nandgarh. It was planned that if admissions came by, students would be taught at a transit campus. However, the university failed to evoke response and not even one student turned up for admission,” the sources said.

Stating an example of the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, PTU officials said 20 years ago, it started teaching engineering in computer sciences and electronics on its campus, which has 100 per cent placement record. Later, it opened regional centers at Jalandhar, Gurdaspur and Sultanpur Lodhi that are running successfully.

“The haste that the PTU is showing may make the project run into rough weather,” the officials said.
