Raksha Morcha chief may float own party
Dehradun, August 14 Speaking to mediapersons at the Defence Colony at a convention of ex-servicemen, retired personnel from the paramilitary forces and people from other political and social organisations on the issue of eradication of corruption from state, Rawat said, “Just like a war, we take our time in strategising and synchronising our moves, here too I am taking my time in judging people’s mood, taking suggestion and holding discussions with them before arriving at a final decision. “At the moment, the forum floated by me is purely apolitical,” he added. He got a shot in the arm when Narender Singh Negi, a popular Garhwali folk singer, who has been known for his songs against corruption, also joined him today. On being asked, why he was involved in the activities of the forum despite his party’s reservation on it, he said, “I’ll continue to raise voice on the corruption-related issues. If the state government holds an impartial probe into the various scams, which took place after the formation of the state, and punish the guilty, then I may listen to the party on this matter.”

Hill potato price may rise this month: Scientists
Nainital, August 14 The main objective of this project is to release price forecasts of selected agricultural commodities before sowing and during harvesting. The project team of Pantnagar centre had conducted market survey of the Haldwani regulated market, a major market for hill potato in Uttarakhand and analysed the wholesale price data of the last 21 years. The econometric analysis indicated that the wholesale prices of hill potato in Haldwani market would range between Rs 1,500 and 1,650 per quintal in August and September 2011, while these prices are expected to be around Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,450 per quintal in October this year. The scientists had advised the farmers, who were sowing hill potato crop in the coming season, to plan for early harvesting of the potato to get better prices. According to the trader’s survey, August, September and October are the peak arrival months, while July and November are the lean-arrival months of hill potato in the Haldwani market. The traders of the Krishi Utpadan Mandi Samiti, Haldwani, revealed that the hill potato is mainly arriving from different areas of Nainital and Almora districts, along with selected areas of the Garhwal region. The main growing belts are Garur, Someshwer, Basoli, Paharpani, Motiawaghar, Dhanachuli, Shaherphatak, Chaamkhan and Nathukhan in the Kumaon region, along with Dewal, Gwaldam and Chamoli blocks in the Garhwal region. In Uttarakhand, the hill potato is relatively highly priced being off-season and exported to other regions due to low availability of potato of the plains during this season. Sowing of the hill potato starts from February end and lasts up to March and April according to different altitudes. The harvesting of the crop starts from the July end and lasts up to November.
