Drunk drivers made to stand in court for the day
Chandigarh, June 20
In an exemplary mode of punishment meant to deter drunk driving, six city residents whom the traffic police had ‘challaned’ (fined) for driving under the influence were on Monday made to stand in a court “till the rising of court” in the evening.

Sec 28 mishap: Bus driver jailed till July 4
Chandigarh, June 20
The bus driver accused of killing three persons in an accident in Sector 28 on Saturday night has been jailed till July 4, as the UT police strongly opposed his bail application and no person stood surety for him while he was furnishing bail bonds in court today. The bail application of Sunil Kumar, the driver of the ill-fated private bus, was hence rejected.

Mohali, June 20
In a virtual admission that the government’s own battery of town planners and engineers cannot deliver, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has decided to “outsource” the job of planning and executing development works in the upcoming five urban estates in Chandigarh’s periphery.

I-T watchdog releases Rs 1.4 cr disputed tax refunds
Chandigarh, June 20
The northwest region office of the income tax ombudsman has released disputed tax refunds amounting to Rs 1.4 crore to taxpayers for the 2010-11 assessment year. According to officials, of the total 358 complaints received by the ombudsman in that year, 328 pertained to refunds. The number of complaints for refunds was higher than the figure of 251 in the preceding fiscal when Rs 1.53 crore was released.

A bag containing Rs 3.5 lakh in cash was found stolen from a Maruti car at a petrol station in Sector 31 on Monday. The suspect, a juvenile who appeared to be about 12 years old, fled with the money after fooling the car owner into believing oil was leaking from the vehicle’s engine.

The engineering department of the Chandigarh Administration has lifted water gates at the regulatory end of the Sukhna Lake in an effort to plug leakage, particularly during monsoon. The plugging of gates had commenced following an order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in response to a public interest litigation (PIL).

Over 12,000 students have so far registered for admission to 11,000 seats in various streams in Class XI at 37 government schools. Around 2,019 admission forms were submitted on the last day.

Despite witnessing a 20 to 30 per cent dropout rate in courses offered by Panjab University’s science departments, the university continues to be the top choice of students aiming for a career in science. Admitted through Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by PU itself, an array of specialisations in physics, chemistry, botany, environment sciences, biochemistry, bio informatics, biotechnology, anthropology, microbiology and instrumentation are offered by the university depending on a student’s non-medical or medical background in classes XI and XII.

Kingfisher told to pay RsH 60,000
Chandigarh, June 20
In a bid to provide some relief to fliers, who face harassment at the hands of airlines and are left in the lurch due to last-minute cancellation of flights, the UT Consumer Forum has directed Kingfisher Airlines to pay Rs 60,000 to a family who had faced a similar situation. The airlines have also been asked to pay Rs 15,000 as litigation cost.

Chetan won the first frame 51-31, but Ankur came back in the second frame and won it 58-4. In the third frame, Chetan made a comeback and won 65-25, but Ankur won the next two frames.

The teams are Indian Football Association, Kolkata, Dalbir Football Academy, Patiala, Kingston Nikhil Nandy Academy, Dum Dum, Kolkata, Jammu and Kashmir Football Association, Gorkha Training Centre, Shillong, Sambalpur Football Academy and Himachal Pradesh Football Association, Nahan.
