More farmers opting for polygreen houses
Tribune News Service

Fatehgarh Sahib, June 20
With reducing agricultural landholdings small and marginal farmers are opting for polygreen houses. This has led to an increase of 28.4 hectares under these houses from last year’s 20 hectares in the district.

Officials of the horticulture department at Fatehgarh Sahib said nearly 10 hectares more area was expected to come under polygreen house by this year-end. The officials said an increase of 42 per cent was witnessed in the area as many farmers had come forward to opt for polygreen houses.

Besides growing vegetables like capsicum, chilly and tomatoes many farmers have grown a wide variety of flowers as well. They are earning much more than the traditional farming, as a polygreen house could be setup in small area of mere 1,000 hectares.

One has to spend Rs 9.5 lakh on which the government provides 50 per cent subsidy later on. About 6,000 plants of different variety of flowers could be grown in 1,000 hectares, which costs nearly Rs 2.5 lakhs. One plant costs nearly Rs 35 to the farmers, including transportation cost.

Jagdev Singh, deputy director of the horticulture department, Fatehgarh Sahib, said flower growers were earning Rs 2.5 lakh and more. One plant continued to produce flowers for three years and there was hardly any use of chemicals while growing vegetables or flowers inside polyhouses, he added.

“Since insects and rodents fail to crawl into the polyhouses, there is hardly any chance of attack of any kind of disease. One has to maintain the temperature inside the net house,” said the deputy director.

He said farmers of Fatehgarh Sahib took advantage of its proximity with cities like Chandigarh and Ludhiana where requirement of flowers increased manifold during festive season.

Kingfisher told to pay RsH 60,000
Had cancelled flight at last minute
Anuja Jaiswal
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 20
In a bid to provide some relief to fliers, who face harassment at the hands of airlines and are left in the lurch due to last-minute cancellation of flights, the UT Consumer Forum has directed Kingfisher Airlines to pay Rs 60,000 to a family who had faced a similar situation. The airlines have also been asked to pay Rs 15,000 as litigation cost.

The forum refused to accept the oft-repeated claims of errant airlines that the cancellation was due to “reasons behind the control”, the forum ruled that such claims had to be backed with evidence and not merely words. The airlines was told to compensate as it had failed to back its claim for cancellation with documentary evidence.

Iqbal Singh and his family (wife Jagrup Kaur and daughter Upneet) had booked tickets of Kingfisher airlines for Srinagar to Chandigarh through Bajaj travels. The complainants alleged that while returning from Srinagar to Chandigarh on October 24, 2009, the scheduled flight was cancelled without a prior intimation.

The complainants stated that due to cancellation, they had to stay back at Srinagar without a proper arrangement and they had to face a lot of inconvenience. When the complainant requested Kingfisher to arrange a flight from Srinagar to Chandigarh for the next day, it did not do it.

Finally, the complainants had to purchase tickets of SpiceJet for October 25, 2009, from Srinagar to Jammu for Rs 3,200 per person. However, the expenses were reimbursed later. They alleged that they had to bear taxi expenses of Rs 8,000 from Jammu airport to Chandigarh airport, but airlines didn’t accept the demand.

The airlines contested the complaint, saying the flight was cancelled at the last minute due to technical reasons. The airlines further claimed that the cancellation was beyond its control and thus the complainant could not be intimated. As per policy, passengers were given an option for full refund or free rescheduling in the next available flight as per availability of seats, but the complainants preferred full refund and the same was paid to them, stated the airlines in its reply.

The forum, however, pointed out that it was necessary on part of airlines to explain and support the same with some cogent documentary evidence that the flight was cancelled for the reasons beyond its control. In the absence of this, the forum found Kingfisher guilty of deficiency of service. Accordingly, Kingfisher was asked to pay compensation of Rs 60,000 to the family.

Chandigarh, June 20
The city may boast of its hi-tech gyms at the Lake Club, opposite the Sukhna, the Sports Complex, Sector 42, and the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, but the condition of gyms at all coaching centres is pathetic compared to modern gyms.

Gyms in VIP areas or for VIPs are more hi-tech than gyms for players at sports complexes and training centres, which have not undergone change in 15 years.

The equipment at gyms of Football Stadium, Sector 17, Sports Complex, Sector 7, and Sports Complex, Sector 46, are too old to be used, leading to locked doors.

Dept’s negligence

Gyms of coaching centres are under the sports department whereas hi-tech gyms are under the sports council. The sports department provides infrastructure to the sports council. VIPs and paid members concentrate only on ‘modern’ gyms.

During a recent meeting, the UT sports authorities have decided to buy new equipment for the gym at the Lake Club, but none has come up with the idea to renovate old gyms.

The authorities maintain that if the coach appointed at a coaching centre asks for requirements in writing, the centre is provided those.

Players get an hour

The exercise room at Sports Complex, Sector 42, is equipped with the latest technology, but players with the football and hockey academies can use the gym there only for an hour.

Members of the gym have been given special timings, which are two or three hours in duration.

“We understand that the gym is for players of academies, but other sports disciplines are being played. Weight training is essential for each game,” says a coach.
