Four-hour downpour inundates houses, City roads
Ludhiana, June 17
Exposing the municipal corporation’s “preparedness” to tackle waterlogging ahead of the monsoon, Friday’s thundershowers that lashed the city and its surrounding areas for four hours left streets inundated and homes and shops in kneedeep water, throwing normal life out of gear.

Poor drainage annoys councillors

Cars go under 7-ft deep water in MC parking lot
Ludhiana, June 17
The municipal corporation was unable to prevent its own multilevel parking lot at Mata Rani Chowk from being inundated after the heavy rain that lashed the city and its surrounding areas on Friday. With the ground level under seven feet of water nearly 20 privately owned vehicles parked there were submerged, leaving their owners fuming and fretting. Rainwater accumulated in the parking lot reportedly due to backflow of sewage from drains.

In a major embarrassment to the city police, the local court has directed the Police Commissioner, Ishwar Singh, to register a case against Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP-I) Harsh Bansal, District Attorney (DA-legal) Sirdana and three persons from the debt recovery tribunal for helping the accused in a land-grab case.

Farmers heaved a sigh of relief with the pre-monsoon showers lashing the region. They are all smiles as excessive water is useful for paddy transplantation and would face fewer problems during the sowing season.

Spat over repaired road takes an ugly turn
Ludhiana, June 17
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress activists are engaged in a spat over a recently- repaired road, connecting posh Model Town Extension with Model House, in Ward No 47 of the city. Both parties are levelling allegations and counter allegations against each other as the house of an area councillor and leader of SAD councillors, Harbhajan Singh Dang, is also located on the same road.

Civil Surgeon moots rapid response team
Ludhiana, June 17 Dr Harinder Pal Singh Bali, who has been appointed Civil Surgeon of Ludhiana, said today that rapid response teams would be constituted to combat diseases in the city. Talking to The Tribune Dr Bali said: “I will meet all senior medical officers of the district in this regard on Monday.”

‘Padho Punjab’ — Is it really working?

For the second year in row, Ludhiana district has got “C” grade in “Padho Punjab”, a project being run by Sarv Shisha Abhiyan, Punjab, and Pratham, an NGO. With this, the aim of the project- to increase the teaching aptitude of government school teachers and learning competency of children- seems to have forfeited, as the district has been ranked 19th out of total 20 districts of Punjab.

Heavy rush for admission is being witnessed at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) these days. For just 90 seats, a total of 3,549 applications were received for BSc agriculture (Hons), the entrance test for which will be held on June 20.

2 persons attacked at petrol station
Jagraon, June 17
Two persons were attacked by some unidentified persons at a petrol station located on the Jagraon-Raikot road this afternoon. The victims have been identified as Nirmal Singh, alias Nimma, and Jagraj Singh of Akhara village near Jagraon.

Mohali, Ropar lads set for title clash
Ludhiana, June 17
Mohali and Ropar lads won their respective semifinal matches to clash for the title in the under-21category on the concluding day of the second edition of the Prithipal Singh Memorial Six-a-Side Hockey Festival. These matches are jointly being organised by the Jarkhar Hockey Academy and the Ludhiana Sports Welfare Association at Mata Sahib Kaur Stadium in Jarkhar village. All the matches were played in a floodlit stadium.
