Dressed to KILL!
Wardrobe malfunction is one thing, while dysfunctional wardrobe quite another, but those in the glamour world have no business to get bling wrong. That is why post each Oscars, Grammy’s and Cannes, there’s an update on the worst dressed and the well dressed. Nevertheless, there are some who ‘stand apart’ throughout the year. Does Vidya Balan top the list? Some of the city youngsters take out the telescopes and judge every bit of visible thread or the lack of it to rate some of the worst dressed celebrities in Bollywood. “Celebrities have no business looking dowdy. Youngsters usually look up to them. Especially when you are in the entertainment industry and it’s your job to look good, you better look good,” says Daisy Mirza, UIFT student, Panjab University. She adds, “In my opinion, Vidya Balan doesn’t know how to dress up. She fails to look like a celebrity both on and off screen, and her clothes don’t make any statement. I’m am a fashion student and in the habit of scrutinising who’s wearing what and where.” Who’s wearing whatever, loads of Indian celebs need to sack their stylists! Think Mallika Sherawat, Rakhi Sawant, Amrita Rao… “I think Amrita Rao seriously needs a stylist,” says Alpa Sharma, another PU student. Surprisingly or not so surprisingly, eccentric, loud style statements a la Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Slash…find a favour. Adds Alpa, “In fact, my style diva has to be Rihanna. I really like the way she dresses, styles her hair, carries herself or rather carries off any outfit. One of my latest buys is puffed up sleeves, the Lady Gaga way.” Does Amrita Rao have company? Shares Manavjot Kaur, law student, “Rakhi Sawant is over the top and gaudy; in my opinion she’s the worst dressed celebrity.” While a star’s right to lie low and turn up in flip flops is being debated upon or settled, it’s the bad taste in clothes which is unpardonable. “Why just a celeb, everybody should dress up according to their body shape and personality. Clothes should be an extension of your individuality, not an encroachment,” opines Manveen Kaur, diploma student, INIFD. Her hit list doesn’t vary either. “Whatever Vidya Balan wears, doesn’t appreciate either her figure or her face. Something is seriously wrong with her.” There is an echo. “No matter what she wears, on screen, off screen - Western or Indian, she doesn’t get it right somehow.”
The onscreen talent is no excuse for off screen faux pas! Aishwarya Rai’s 2003 Canne’s fiasco is a case in point. Adds Daisy, “The criterion for judging a well dressed from a worst dressed person remains pretty much the same. You need to primarily look at two things - your personality and your shape. And then wear clothes that bring out your personality and not weigh you down.” The philosophy is loud and clear, if you can’t be chic, at least don’t look clichéd! Didn’t the much acknowledged Bollywood’s style icon Sonam Kapoor, admit to everybody’s dressing sense as dumb and dowdy. Till the time, everybody gets their accessories and ensembles right, the youngsters continue screaming - Oh my God! What was she thinking? manpriya@tribunemail.com |

Sound of passion
Everything comes down to a simple thing — either you have it in you or you don’t. And if you do, how can you let everything go down the drain. DJ Ashrafi, celebrity deejay visiting Chandigarh for the promotion of Saturday Nights at Crystal Bar-26, puts across her point a bit philosophically. Nothing extraordinary about the attire, no making an impression through the bling, and loads of accessories, Ashrafi does come across as someone who has it in her — the spirit to try something, which the world might for once rule out or demark as a men’s domain. She explodes into a throaty laughter. “I have been deejaying for almost five years now, at a time when there weren’t enough girls doing this. I was working with Bollywood singer Sukhwinder Singh as a sound engineer, before I thought of giving deejaying a shot,” she keeps the introduction short and sweet. We expect something from everyone who qualifies to be a ‘deejay’. “You are expecting some spicy story behind the making of a girl DJ, but there isn’t any. Yes, my music can offer a lot of spice,” she adds. A girl DJ…interesting anecdotes expected! Oh! We saw that puckish grin. “As a girl deejay, I don’t have to make extra effort to get attention, it comes naturally. But I hope you are not missing out on the point, which is music,” says Ashrafi. “The only reason I want to be known for is deejaying,” she clears her stance. Bollywood music is Ashrafi’s genre, and she likes to stick to the genre for reasons known to her. “I don’t believe in aping the west blindly. DJ’s these days are experimenting with different genres of music, but I like to stick to Bollywood, which is Indian to the core.” Whether it is the peppy Bachna Ae Haseeno or crackling Kajraare, this deejay has seen people go crazy whenever she has played these tracks.
And the way party-goers look at a pretty girl behind the console, ogling eyes, hushed notes… any change? “It depends from city to city. Well, if you are walking down to the road, ogling eyes can’t be avoided. The onus is on me. But if I am playing great numbers, making people dance why would they even bother to see me.” Now, these are the things they don’t teach in a deejay school. She crackles, “No they don’t. Besides, schools only fine tune skills, deejaying is pure passion, and no one can teach you how to enjoy music and make others do the same,” she smiles, one of the permanent things in her life other than music! jasmine@tribunemail.com |
You RELATE to this?
In this ever-changing world, words expressing relationships have graduated from friends, love, spouses to frenimies, luv and gray.mate! In this ‘instant’ era, when choices are abundant and attention spans very short, these words reflect the transitory nature of relationships.
We get you some of the new entries in the social
lexicon: Frenemy
If you ever heard ‘friends are forever’ please erase it from your memory. Frenemy stands for friends who are rivals or worse still enemy disguised as a friend. Workplace is the best hangout of this species and if you encounter more than three today, please pay heed to our advice above! Shroom.mate
They take their name from mushroom (no prizes for guessing) and grow abundantly right after a breakup. Seasonal, they disappear soon after. In fact, there are many variants, check it…play.mate - just for playing (wink wink), gray.mate - status not clear, pre.mate - together in everything but yet to say the three words! Ex-hole
A curious mix of a cheating ex and an abuse. The person using it feels relaxed, they say. Hot-room
A complex situation when there is a mix of current and ex love/play interests. Manicorn
Superficial and sincere!
"Relationships today are a tightrope walk, when you will fall you don't know," says Rajesh Gill, chairperson, department of Sociology, Punjab University. "The boundaries of relationships are not clear and this gets reflected in the terminology they use." In a scenario when no relationship is permanent or dependable, the confusion is very visible in the very terms they describe them. But the basic human needs do not change. "One can enjoy the non-committal phase for sometime but then, for everyone, comes a day when one wants to settle down in a lasting relationship," points out Gill. "So, both these kinds of relationships - superficial and sincere - continue to exist in different dimensions of our life." Derived from unicorn (we know you guessed this one too) it refers to unfound male species that supposedly pleases the woman species and fulfils all their desires - read, flowers, diamonds, presents in general. Unrequited besties
A considers B is the best friend. B considers C to be the best friend. The chain continues till the two agree on mutual bestiship! Antisocial networking

High on glam
Every person has a sense of style in his own right. Yet there are only few who'd attract second glances, who have the power to make the camera go zoom in on them. It could be the tousled hair, torn jeans! A Chandigarh youngster Anupreet Sidhu, a student of UIFT, Panjab University, shares her style mantras. Your sense of style is… I love John Galliano so obviously I love colours. But to look stylish you need to know your body and wear appropriate clothes because what looks great on a size 2, may not please a size 12. Latest addition in the wardrobe… I buy loads of stuff in one go but my favourite one from the last addition is a pair of pumps from Shelly's wardrobe Sector-8. Brand freak or street smart? I am a street-smart brand freak. Anything from Alexander McQueen to Anupreet Sidhu will do as long as it is different. Choose one: Sporty, glamorous or chic? Glamorous for sure. I love exaggerating everything. Big lashes, doll lenses, sky scrapper heels, big round pink glasses to a big bow with flowers on my hair band. Glamorous is here to stay. Favourite style icon? Lady Gaga. Need any explanation on this one? Who's the worst dressed celebrity? And the award goes to… Nicki Minaj (female) and snoop dogg (male) One fashion trend you don't understand… Permanent tattoos on the whole body. Your take on accessories? Minimal is more. One thing that boosts your confidence Its love and encouragement from my family and friends. (As told to Manpriya Khurana) |

Proud parents
Hollywood star Jennifer Connelly and actor Paul Bettany have become the proud parents of a baby girl.
The Dark Waters star gave birth to her third child Agnes Lark at the home she shares in New York with husband Bettany on May 31, her spokesperson has confirmed. The 40-year-old actress, who has Kai, 13, with David Dugan and seven-year-old Stellan with husband Bettany, had a scheduled home water birth, delivering her child in a birthing pool. "Everyone is healthy and doing well. The family is very excited," Connelly's representative said. The actress, who married Paul in 2003 after two years of dating, said earlier this year she had suffered badly with morning sickness during her third pregnancy. "The first three months were very sketchy. You know how like you have your cell phone and you have to stand in one spot? It was like that with nausea. I had to stand in one spot, which happened to be in front of my refrigerator, which was open with me dipping pretzels in cream cheese and stuffing them in my mouth," she said.
— PTI Tom Hanks has revealed that he is upbeat and has the same get-up-and-go attitude as his character 'Larry' in his new movie. The actor-and-director played the titular role in new movie Larry Crowne, about a man who decides to reinvent himself after losing his job. "I would like to say that I'm as bad a dresser as Larry is at the beginning of the movie, no I am. Larry wakes up one morning and says, 'Okay, how am I going to improve things today?' I'd like to think I'm a little upbeat like that," he says. In the film, Hanks meets a teacher at the college (Julia Roberts) and he decides to enlist following, which he falls for her. The 54-year-old star also added that he never had an educator quite like her. "I didn't have teachers like Julia Roberts, but I had some that I had crushes on,” he said. — ANI
Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie is set to reprise her role as Evelyn Salt in the sequel to her 2010 movie Salt. The 37-year-old actress is in talks to play the CIA agent again in the much speculated sequel after Sony Pictures commissioned writer Kurt Wimmer to press ahead with a screenplay. Jolie has always been open about wanting to do a sequel because there is more to discover from her character. "I'd love to do a sequel. You never know if you're going to get the chance, if audiences are going to love it. But particularly with this character, I think there is so much yet to explore in her life with her - with her family, with coming to terms with who she is in the end, because of the way it's set up, she could be anybody. — PTI |

Nightingale Lata Mangeshkar, who religiously watches popular TV series CID for the past many years recently invited the whole CID team to her house. The whole team and Lata didi had a great time. A source said, "Lata Mangeshkar loves this show very much and watches with her entire family. She likes the concept of the show and also characters like ACP Praduman played by noted actor Shivaji Satam, Daya and others. She also spoke about various CID episodes. The team had carried a couple of fake guns along and Lataji tried her hand on one of them recounting her childhood days when she had a good aim. "It was quite an emotional meeting that singer like Lata Mangeshkar loves the acting the show and also remembers every detail of the show's episodes." We then spoke to actor Shivaji Satam, "It was incredible and we all didn't believe that we all are meeting Lata didi. We all were there for almost 2 ½ hours and chatted about the CID. Not only Lata Mangeshkar, we also met her family and so for us it was small get together. We were not treated a guest but as the member of the family.” — HRM

Khushboo Garewal is upset these days. Her role in Rang Badalti Odhani has come to an end. The actor who had great camaraderie with the cast of the show, used to look forward to going to work every morning , to the extent that her husband used to wonder how she was so excited about going to work everyday. The actress now is planning to have a small get together for her second family-Khandelwals. She will now be seen in Sony's Chaje Chaje Ka Pyaar. Saumya Tandon wants to recreate the Jab We Met magic and is considering some good film scripts. Samuya, who is anchoring the current season of Comedy Circus Ke Tansen, might not be part of the next season which will be aired next month. She is looking to her return to films. Her debut venture as Roop in Imitiaz Ali's super hit film, Jab We Met got her rave reviews. If the film project works out, she may not even host subsequent seasons of Zee TV's Dance India Dance as well. Punctuality is a word that's often not synonymous with our celebrities! However, proving this statement wrong is our very own Neeta Shetty aka Aarti of Star One's Dhoondh Legi Manzil Humein. Everybody on the sets can vouch for her punctuality and professionalism. Neeta is extremely committed to her work. Despite shooting till wee hours of the morning, she is always the first one to report on the sets the following day. One such instance is when there was a shoot for an important scene of the election rally which went on till 5 am. Neeta's call time the next day was at 7.30 and the actress, did not crib about her shift at all. She reached on time looking as fresh as ever. Such attitude just perks up everyone on the sets. Perhaps, all actors should take a lesson from Neeta. This is what we call, professionalism! |
Marriage is like dating for life
It's been just a few days back that Raquesh Vashisht and Riddhi Dogra tied the knot. The actors who feature in STAR Plus' late prime time show Maryada Lekin Kab Tak speak about their new life, how it feels to be married, how it has changed their lives and much more. Has marriage changed your relationship? Raquesh: Luckily there is no change as it feels great to marry your best friend and we still feel like we are dating. That shouldn't end with marriage I feel. The only change I have noticed is that Ridhi has given our home a woman's touch. Riddhi: We feel that our dating period has started after marriage. I want that it should go on forever. Every newly married couple should feel like they are dating. I am happy to be spending every hour with him. Have you noticed any changes in each other? Raquesh: No. I am enjoying being with my beloved wife and it's good to be with her everyday on the sets of the show as well. Riddhi: I don't want to become a watchdog for him. I am with him in anything he does but it has to be right. Do you miss anything at all from your pre-marriage period? Raquesh: Nothing in particular. I feel this is the best period as we have just begun our lives together. I am enjoying this phase of life which God has given me. Riddhi: I do miss the sleepless nights when we wanted to be together. We enjoyed the dating period and now we are enjoying the marriage too. Did you have to adjust a lot? Riddhi: Frankly speaking, we have been married for a few days only and I feel if there is any adjustment required for the better then there is no harm in doing so. Nothing for me has changed in house before or after marriage. Raquesh: I feel if we were living with my parents in Pune then she would have had to adjust with their lifestyle but now as there are just the two of us, I don't feel there is any need for adjustments. What changes have you made in Raquesh’s house after marriage? Riddhi: I have been to his house before marriage and I was really impressed with the interiors. His house was a lounge before and now it has become a home sweet home. I have added important things all we need like as the kitchen had only a gas stove now it will well stocked. Raquesh: I am impressed with what she has done at home. Does marriage need work every day? Raquesh: Not really. If you respect each other then there shouldn't be any problem. Every couple should stay away from ego clashes. Riddhi: I feel every relationship needs attention and one must be very patient in a new relationship. It's all about adjusting. Which love song or film you relate to? Raquesh: We will create our own song but I think it has to When Love And Hate Collide by Def Leppard. Ridhi: The same. I also feel we can connect with the TV series Friends. — HRM |
