Hailstones damage sunflower crop
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 22 The area under sunflower crop in Amloh block is nearly 4,000 hectare. Farmers had grown this crop after harvesting potato crop between the months of January and March. Those who had grown sunflower seeds in January have reported little damage to their crop while those who had sown in February and March are the worst affected. Farmers Inderjit Singh and Parminder Singh said the rain and hailstones had affected their crop in the past two days. The sprouting flowers of the crop got completely damaged in the inclement weather. Balvir Singh, Kartar Singh and Jitender Singh said the crop sown in January was almost ready and it managed to survive even in heavy hailstones that lashed the area for more than two hours last night. Officials of the local administration and politicians had visited the affected farms and took the stock of the losses. The local politicians have demanded special girdawri to assess the loss and due compensation to the affected farmers. |

8 fined for travelling without ticket
Ambala, May 22 The check was carried out in the Shatabdi Express train coming from New Delhi. Since there was no halt of this train at Ambala Cantt railway station, it was stopped near DRM office before Ambala Cantt railway station by the checking staff. The raid was conducted on the directions of highly placed sources in railway headquarters in New Delhi. These sources told Ambala DRM office that some passengers were travelling without ticket in coordination with the railway staff in Shatabdi Express running between New Delhi and Amritsar. |

BJP MLA to back farmers stir
Ambala, May 22 Vij told mediapersons today that fertile land of farmers in Panjokhra belt was being acquired for developing the Industrial Model Township. This would affect the economy of the farming community as they would be rendered jobless. Earlier in the day, Balwant Singh, president of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, met Anil Vij and impressed upon him to back farmers stir against the land acquisition. Vij said he, along with his supporters, would sit on 24-hour hunger strike outside the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate on May 23. He called upon the Haryana government to shelve the IMT project at Panjokhra. In case this was not done there would be a decisive agitation by the farmers against the land acquisition, he said. He added that there was no justification for acquiring fertile land for the IMT, as earlier two existing industrial areas in Ambala district have not been developed. Vij also alleged that development works had come to a halt in his constituency. Grants were not being released resulting in tardy execution of development works. The BJP legislator alleged that the project sanctioned even 10 years back was still not completed. He cited the example of sewerage works in Ambala Cantt, which had still not been completed. Vij called upon Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda to see for himself the state of civic amenities in Ambala. |
Chandigarh Club looks to move HC
Chandigarh, May 22 The club claimed it had learnt that the administration had issued demolition orders of “unauthorised construction”. This, the club claimed, would amount to contempt of court. The club said the High Court had stayed the demolition proceedings, while directing the club to file a revised building plan within a stipulated period. After the approval of the plan by the administration, the club was to be given three months to remove the violations and erect the structures as per the revised plans before removing the “unauthorised structures”. In accordance with the High Court orders, they submitted the plans in 2005 but were yet to receive the approval, the club added. Any move to remove the structures at the current stage would amount to contempt, it reiterated. |

Chandigarh, May 22 The police has arrested the bus driver, Raj Kumar, a resident of Hamirpur. A case under Sections 279, 337 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered against him at the Sector 36 police station. He was later released on bail. |

Labourer booked for raping minor
Mohali, May 22 According to the police, when the mother of the victim went out for some work on April 21, the accused lured the victim to his house and physically abused her. The girl was rescued by her mother and taken to a hospital. On hearing about the incident, residents of the locality thrashed of the accused before handing him over to the police. A case under Section 376 of the IPC was registered against the Pawan Kumar. 5 booked for cheating
Sohan Singh Sood, a former president of the Phase I gurdwara, has been booked by the police along with four other persons for misusing the gurdwara premises and funds. A case under Section 406 of the IPC has been registered against the five persons.
Stolen cars recovered
The Mohali police had arrested Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Khanna, for stealing cars and selling them on the basis of forged documents and using a fake registration number. Two cars have been recovered from him and a case under Sections 379, 411 and 420 of the IPC has been registered by the police. |

For ICICI-XI, Amit Gupta was the pick of the bowlers as he scalped four wickets giving away 15 runs only. Rajneesh was the other successful bowler as he took two wickets for 18 runs. In reply, ICICI Bank did not face any difficulty in achieving the target and scored 109 runs for the loss of four wickets in just 13.4 overs. CGC honours 42 young golfers
Chandigarh, May 22 Speaking on the occasion, Harmeet Kahlon, who remained national amateur champion for several years, said five miniature golf courses had been laid on the Khanna DPS campus along with a driving range. Harmeet who now plays on the Asian Tour is the adviser of the DPS Golf Academy. Manjit Kochar, director (overseas), Junior Golf Development Programme of the Indo-Canadian Golf Association, Canada, conducted a weeklong golf camp from May 15 to 21 in which 42 kids between six and 16 years were taught the basic fundamentals of the game. Another one-month camp will be held next month, which will be open to students of all other schools of the area. Satinder Bali from the DPS, Khanna, thanked the club for honouring the children. She also thanked Harmeet Kahlon and Manjit Kochar of the Chandigarh Golf Club for helping the DPS Golf Academy. |

PCA to invite top architects for new stadium
Mohali, May 22 It must be mentioned that at the last PCA executive committee meeting in February, the management had decided to build a modern cricket stadium on the outskirts of Chandigarh. The Mohali stadium is located in residential area and lacks proper parking facilities, which led the management to opt for a new stadium. “On March 30 the PCA hosted World Cup semifinals, between India and Pakistan at its Mohali stadium, which, besides, the Prime Ministers of the two nations was watched by a hosts of dignitaries around the globe. Therefore, keeping our growing reputation in mind, the Mullanpur stadium will be ultra modern and world-class,” said Sandhu, who has also served as a manager of the Indian hockey team. The new stadium will have two grounds for matches and practise and also state-of-the-art cricket academy. |
