3 PU achievers who stand out
Chandigarh, May 17
Three exceptional achievers today outshone all other gold medallists in various subjects at the Panjab University’s academic function. While Dinkar Bhasin and Pranav Chamoli won six and five gold medals each for excelling in medical and law fields, respectively, tabla artiste Anil Kumar Sharma completed and topped his master’s degree at the age of 48. He resumed his formal studies after a gap of nearly two decades!

Two students drown in canal
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 17
Victims Sumit Tripathi and Sukhdeep Singh Two students of RIMT Polytechnic College drowned in the water channel emanating from Sirhind Canal, near the Floating Restaurant, here today. The victims have been identified as Sukhdeep Singh (17), a student of electrical engineering (IInd semester), and Sumit Tripathi (18), a student of mechanical engineering (IVth semester).

Assault case: 7 more names in FIR
The police has added names of seven more advocates in the FIR registered in Sector 17 in the incident involving assault on a naib court on May 14. These include Ankush Kalia, Manish Kumar Dhiman, Rupesh Kumar, Rajan Khetarpal, APS Dhillon, Surinder Singh and Gurdit Singh. Meanwhile, registrar of the High Court on today recorded statements of advocates, police officials, court staff and the Magistrate Parvinder Singh. The High Court had yesterday directed the registrar to prepare a fact-finding report into the incident.

163 out of 202 get medals, merit certificates at PU academic function

How to calculate the percentage of class X and XII students? The question once again haunted the Tricity schools today with the declaration of the results of the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).

 Sumit “My parents are not highly qualified and thus couldn’t help me much with my studies, but their hopes, struggle and ambition was my key driving force. I wish to make all their dreams come true,” said Sumit, a son of a peon at St Xavier’s, who passed Class X, from the same school with 77 per cent marks.

St Kabir steals the show in ICSE
Tender Heart School follows

St Kabir School, Sector 26, came out with flying colours in ICSE results with over 37 of its Class X students securing above 90 per cent. The school is also proud of one of its students Dhruv Ratanpura, who topped the tricity.

Seventy-eight shopkeepers were challaned for encroaching upon the Municipal Corporation land during an anti-encroachment drive in the Sector 34 furniture market here today.

Anshul scripts DPA win
Panchkula, May 17
Anshul hit 37 runs to guide the DP Azad Cricket Academy to lift the Inter-City Cricket Tournament U-11 after beating the host, District Coaching Centre, Panchkula, by 26 runs. DP Azad gave the target of 116 runs in 25 overs, but the rival team gave up at 89 in 24 overs.

Arshia tops in maths contest

Arshia Gupta, a Class II student of Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, Chandigarh, has stood first in the tiny tots category of the first northern region competition of ITM (a brain development course) held at DAV College, Ambala, on Tuesday. A large number of students from Haryana, Punjab, NCR and Chandigarh, participated. The mental abilities of children were tested through the medium of complex arithmetical sums. Children solved 50 sums in less than five minutes.

Some believe in keeping academics, passion alive

Despite the fact that its just two schools in the tricity- St Xavier’s and YPS which have Class XII, figuring out toppers was probably a tedious task which left both parents and students confused, as YPS never calculated the percentage of its students. Going by the “formula” (English+best of three subjects) professed by YPS the following students have topped.

YPS refuses to divide students on merit

Claiming to have taken a cue from the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, refused to calculate the percentage of its students or rank them as toppers. The initiative was taken to keep up with the spirit of council to do away with academic strata system.

Following an alert issued by the Central security agencies about a terror strike, as Jagadhari and Karnal railway authorities have received threat letters to blast prominent railway stations on May 25. The Superintendent of Police (Railways), Haryana, Dr Rajshree Singh, told mediapersons here that security measures on various railway stations in Ambala division had been increased

Two kids drown
Ambala, May 17
Two children of Laharsa village were drowned in the village pond this evening. The deceased were identified as Vishal (9) and Vishal (10). The deceased were both brothers. According to information, the duo was taking a bath in the pond but when they tried to cross the pond they drowned in it.

One killed, two hurt in road mishap

One person was killed and two injured in road accident on Mubarkpur Road near Dera Bassi today. The accident took place when a mini-truck ferrying employees of the PCPL rammed into another mini-truck.

Engineering student killed
Mohali, May 17
A 21-year-old engineering student of Tangori college, Inderjit Singh Sidhu, died after being hit by a tractor trailer near saneta village on the Landhran-Banur road here today. The driver of the tractor trailer has been booked. The body of the victim was handed over to the family after autopsy.

Police cracks Tanishq robbery bid case
Son of UT Police head constable held
Chandigarh, May 17
Seven months after three armed robbers struck at Tanishq showroom in Sector 17 and shot at a female staff member, the Punjab Police has solved the case with the arrest of one of the gang members, who incidentally is the son of a UT Police head constable.

One held for truck driver’s murder
Chandigarh, May 17
A day after the body of a truck driver was recovered from a truck parked near the transit camp in Ram Darbar, the police has arrest of one of the accused. Twenty-eight-year-old truck driver Rakesh Kumar was found murdered yesterday in his truck. The police has arrested Gagan Singh while two of his accomplices, Kuldeep Singh and Amit Kumar, all truck drivers, are still at large.

Man held for creating fake profile on Orkut

The cyber crime cell of the Chandigarh Police today arrested one person for allegedly creating a fake profile of a girl on social networking site ‘Orkut’ and posting obscene messages on it.

Two servants arrested, Rs 5.8 lakh recovered
Chandigarh, May 17
The police arrested two servants, Mallan Kumar, alias Shankar, and Dinesh Kumar in cases of thefts. Both accused are natives of Gonda district in UP and an amount of around Rs 5.8 lakh has been recovered from their possession.

Man arrested for threatening guard
Panchkula, May 17
The police arrested a person for threatening a security guard at the vehicle registration office of the mini secretariat in Sector 1 here today. The accused has been identified as Satyawan Khasa. A case has been registered against him under Section 186 and 506 of the IPC.—TNS
