Average students bag top ranks
Sacred Heart students first in all three streams
Ludhiana, May 17
Students of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary Convent School, Sector 39, Chandigarh Road, brought laurels to their institution in the Indian School Certificate (ISC) class XII examinations by bagging top positions in the district in all three streams -- non-medical, medial and commerce.

The second batch of class X of Sat Paul Mittal School made a clean sweep in the ICSE class X examination with its students bagging the top three positions in the district and top five in the city. The results were declared this afternoon.

The buzz
6 per cent city children hypertensive
Ludhiana, May 17
Shocking, but six per cent of the city’s children are hypertensive. The major reason: obesity. Announcing this on the occasion of World Hypertension Day, Dr GS Wander, the head of the Hero DMC Heart Institute, said he had based his observations on a survey conducted on a sample of 5,000 students across five city schools recently.

Her son has been snatched away from her by death. But she has not been told about the curse unleashed on her by the destiny. The unfortunate mother of 18-year-old Sumit Tripathi, a heart patient, who was recently discharged from the CMCH would get a shock of her life when the body of her son would arrive later this evening.

Labourer dies at dairy complex; workers hold protest
Ludhiana, May 17
A 26-year-old migrant labourer, Kulwinder, working at a dairy complex reportedly died here this morning following a heart attack. Representatives from various mazdoor unions held a protest and sought action against the dairy owner who did not allow Kulwinder to go on leave for treatment. About 200 dairy workers gathered near the complex even as the body of the deceased lay on the road.

2-week-old migrant labourer’s murder case cracked; four held
Mullanpur Dakha, May 17
The murder of a migrant labourer, whose body was found in a dome (kupp) of wheat chaff in the fields on the outskirts of Jangpur village, near here, two weeks ago, has turned out be an honour killing.

Theft attempt costs youth his life
Ludhiana, May 17
A youth lost his life while attempting to commit theft at an agriculturist’s house at Kasabaad village near here. He died on the spot when the agriculturist, an Akali leader, fired a shot at him from his rifle. The second youth, who accompanied the thief, managed to flee.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) held a dharna at the mini secretariat against steep rise in the prices of petrol here today. Speakers termed the increase as a bolt from the blue for the people who are already reeling under the skyrocketing prices of essential items.

PAU employees’ stir continues
Ludhiana: The hunger strike by president of the PAU Employees Union Harbans Singh Mundi entered second day today. The president said he would continue the stir till the state government or the PAU authorities gave him a written assurance.

Uniforms, shoes given to students
Government Elementary School, Baddowal, organised a function to distribute uniforms among students. Principal Krishan Dutt from Government Senior Secondary School, Baddowal, and in charge of the school Manju Attri distributed dresses which included trousers, shirts, shoes and sweaters. The grant for the purpose was received under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan programme and 74 students of different classes were given uniforms.

In the annual elections of the District Taxation Bar Association (Sales Tax) Arun Kanwal was unanimously elected president for the second term. Ashwani Kochhar was elected vice-president of the association.

In-laws ‘kill’ man, booked
Ludhiana, May 17
Thirtyone-year-old ajwant Singh of Jandiali village in Sahnewal was allegedly killed by his in-laws following a fight with his wife Harjeet Kaur last night. A case under Sections 302, 34 and 506, IPC, has been registered against the father-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law of Rajwant Singh. No arrest has been made so far.

Ludhiana stun Patiala
Ludhiana, May 17
An excellent bowling display by Nikhil Chowdhary, who claimed seven wickets, helped hosts Ludhiana emerge victorious on the basis of first innings lead of 46 runs against Patiala to avoid relegation in the last league fixture of the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (u-16) for the ML Markan Trophy at Punjab Agricultural University ground here today.
