‘Infighting of councillors affecting development of Dera Bassi’
Dera Bassi, May 16 Only four councillors who have been supporting the president were present at the meeting out of total 14 councillors, including a local MLA. All opposition councillors boycotted the meeting. Notably, the opposition councillors had been successful in removing the president from the post on May 2 by passing the no-confidence motion with the support of 10 councillors. But on the same day the Punjab and Haryana High Court had stayed the move of opposition councillors to remove the president. In her appeal before the high court, the council president had asserted that as per rules the minimum gap between two meetings for the removal of MC chief should be six months but a meeting for her removal was held within few days. Now, the high court will hear the two sides on May 19 on this issue. Though local MLA Jasjit Singh Bunny and council president Dally belong to SAD but on the issue of removing the president, the MLA was supporting the opposition councillors. Jagjit Singh Dally, the husband of council president, and three other councillors who were supporting the president had alleged that the MLA was going against the president of his own party. As amount of Rs 14 crore was lying in the account of the council but could not be spent due to the infighting of councillors for the last one and half years. No resolution could be passed at the meeting of the council because the president was in the minority. Part time and contract employees who were hoping for a regular job according to the decision of the state government were also facing problems due to infighting. Residents said that due to the infighting the town had not witnessed any development activities for last one and half years. |

Ambala scan A devotee from Kaith Majri of Ambala City, Harvinder Singh (47), drowned in the sarovar of Gurdwara Manji Sahib when he slipped while taking a bath in the holy tank. Other visitors at the gurdwara tried to save him on hearing his cries but all in vain. The body was fished out of the water late in the night when the police reached the spot. The victim is survived by his wife and three children. The body was sent to the Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination. — TNS Topper honoured

2 get life term in kidnapping case
Chandigarh, May 16 A case was registered by the Chandigarh Police on the complaint of juice vendor Jawahir Gupta, alleging that his son, Sumit, had been kidnapped. The incident took place in February 2010. In his complaint, Gupta had alleged that he had received a call on his mobile phone from the accused demanding a ransom of Rs 10 lakh, after the complaint had agreed to pay them Rs 2 lakh. The accused asked him to deliver the money at a park in Phase IX, Mohali. The kidnapped boy, Sumit Kumar, was rescued from a house in Mohali. |

Boyfriend’s police remand extended
Panchkula, May 16 According to sources, the police had sought the one day’s police remand to recover the pet dog (cocker spaniel) of the victim, which Tanmay had taken to New Delhi and had left it with one of his friends there. Meanwhile, the police has recovered the mobile phone and the Punto car of Tanmay from his Amritsar residence. The police was trying to get the details of the calls made by the accused to victim Simran before her death. The police has also recovered the Punto car, which was used by the accused to carry the body of Simran from her residence in Sector 15 here to Jalandhar. The accused, who had dumped the body of the victim at Jalandhar before fleeing to Amritsar, had surrendered before the police on May 13. Simran was living in a rented accommodation in Sector 15 and was doing a fashion-designing course at the National Institute of Fashion Designing in Sector 8, Chandigarh. The police had found her car no PB-02BL-0596 abandoned in Sector 16 on May 1 and informed Simran’s father Rajesh Kundra after getting his address from the documents in the car. The father had informed the police that his daughter was married to Karan Kundra, also a resident of Amritsar, in 2004 and she had divorced him in April this year. Confirming the same, SHO Aman Kumar, Sector 14 police station, said that they had recovered the mobile phone and the Punto car of Tanmay, a resident of Green Avenue, Amritsar. |

22 arrested with weapons near HC
Chandigarh, May 16 The police received information at 6.45 am that two vehicles loaded with weapons were seen near the High Court. The police reached the spot and rounded up the 22 occupants of the Tata Winger (PB-01-6889) and a Travera (PB-08-G-8404). On questioning, the leader of the group, Teg Ali, told the police that his daughter was allegedly kidnapped two months ago by a youth residing in their area and they had come to take her with them as they got information that she is coming to the High Court today with the youth. All persons hailed from Jammu and were presently staying in a camp in Mukerian. “We sensed trouble as they were in possession of five “lathis” (sticks), besides batons. The couple’s daughter probably eloped with a youth and was coming to seek protection in the Punjab and Haryana High Court today. All occupants of the two vehicles were arrested under Section 107/51 of the CrPC,” said inspector Mahavir Singh, SHO, Sector 3 police station. |

Drunk youths beat up Home Guard volunteer
Chandigarh, May 16 The incident took place at 1.30 am when Home Guard volunteers Kuldeep and Satish noticed three youths creating a ruckus near Rana Fast Food. The police said the fast food joint was open and when the police asked the owners to down shutters, the trio attacked them. The accused have been identified as Pardeep Rana, his brother Ajay Rana, and Hitesh. The police was called and the accused were arrested. A case under Sections 332, 353, 506 and 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 36 police station. In another incident, Home Guard volunteer Sukhwinder Singh was injured after being hit by a car (CH-03F-7617) near the Sukhna Lake staircase parking number 1. The accused has been identified as Rahul Ghai, resident of Sector 38. The police said Home Guard volunteers Sukhwinder Singh and Satpal Singh were on patrol duty and they spotted a car around 2:30 am with a boy and girl seated inside. When Satpal Singh asked them to come out of the car, the accused pressed accelerator and knocked Sukhwinder Singh down. The accused took the car on the jogging track and rammed it into the barriers installed near the police post. The victim was rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16. The accused was arrested and later released on bail. |

Chandigarh, May 16 Ram Kumar is a resident of Haryana while Ramesh is a resident of Sector 63, Mohali, the police said. The cheating came to light when the signatures and photograph of the accused did not match with those of the candidate. A case of criminal conspiracy and cheating by impersonation has been registered under Section 120-B, 419 and 420 of the IPC against the accused at the Sector 17 police station. |

Digvijay gets better of Surinder in tennis

In a tough contest, Mehta beat Surinder Pal Singh of Punjab 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Mehta fought hard to clinch the first set, but Pal held his nerves and equalled the score one-all by winning the second set with quite ease. Keeping his cool, Mehta displayed sensible game in the decider and clinched the third set and match at 6-3. Playing against Uttar Pradesh’s Nagendra Rai, Talwar put up a good show. He was downed 1-6 in the first set. He came from behind and claimed the next two sets 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the next round. Brahmjot Singh of Delhi caused a mild upset, as he outclassed fourth seed Deepinder Singh Bains of Punjab 6-2, 6-2, while Aviraj Kamboj of Chandigarh shocked seventh seed Vijay Bharadwaj of Haryana 6-4, 6-0. Panchkula, May 16 After winning the toss, Sri Sri Cricket Academy decided to bat first. Sri Sri Academy batsmen were of no match of the bowlers of the opposition, as they were bundled out for 108 runs in the 27th over. Opener Mayank was the sole batsman to put up a decent performance with the bat, as he scored 29 runs off 52 deliveries. He held down the wicket at one end, as batsmen continued tumbling at the other end. He failed to get any support from the other batsmen and eventually fell trying to accelerate the score. For the District Coaching Centre, Sahil Garg was the pick of the bowlers, as he cleaned up the tail that pretty much accounted for a great part of the total runs picking up four wickets for 18 runs. In reply, the batsmen of Distt Coaching Centre made short work of the target even after losing a wicket in the first over.
