Lawyers assault constable in courtroom

The UT district court in Sector 17 witnessed a three-hour-long drama this morning after over a dozen advocates assaulted a police constable posted as a naib court (court assistant) in the courtroom while on duty and dragged him outside the court building while continuously bashing him up.

PGI’s liver transplant patient dead

After a month long struggle, the patient who underwent the first liver transplant at PGIMER breathed his last at 10:30 pm today. Vijay Khurana, a resident of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, underwent PGI’s first liver transplant surgery on April 15 as he was suffering from end-stage liver cirrhosis and liver failure and had a poor expected survival without transplant.

The international taxation wing of the income tax department has assessed “undisclosed income” to the tune of Rs 338 crore during “transfer pricing assessments”, a method to assess values of all cross-border transactions, of seven multinational companies (MNCs), including Pepsi. The multi million-dollar deals involving overseas merger and acquisition pertain to the assessment year 2007-08.

Just a day before completion of one month, protesting Avtar Singh Nagla today descended from his treetop abode. He ended his hunger strike and the treetop protest after he was told that the Mohali Deputy Commissioner has sought a report from the District Revenue Officer on the issues raised by him in a land sale matter within 20 days.

On-dot Courier told to pay Rs 9,800 for lost play station
Rapped for imposing unilateral terms and conditions
Chandigarh, May 14
In a significant judgment, the Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum today rapped the “unilateral” terms and conditions imposed by courier companies in respect to their limited liabilities on lost goods and directed On-dot Courier and Jagdamba Enterprises to pay a city resident, Jaspal Singh, Rs 9,800, the cost of a play station portable (PSP) that was misplaced by the company. The forum also ordered the courier company to pay Rs 10,000 compensation to the complainant.

Brewer acquitted of murder charges
Witnesses turn hostile; businessman was killed on September 11, 2010

A local court today acquitted a man on the charges of murdering a businessman. The court acquitted Kapil Gupta, a resident of Sector 10 Panchkula, and owner of Himgiri Brewery at Kala Amb in Himachal in the murder case of a Solan resident.

Vishal Kumar (26) allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house at Sunrise Apartment, Lohgarh village, here this morning. However, the Zirakpur police has booked his wife and in-laws in a case of abetment to suicide on the complaint of the deceased’s father Shagun Lal, a resident of Uttam Nagar, New Delhi.
