All(oys) that glitter!
When modifications to a vehicle begin, they ought to start with a capital A — the beauty of the accessory is that every Lamborghini has it and perhaps even every Lambretta has it! The irony is, alloy wheels are still a class act. The big boys are who started the trend, so what if now every little Peter Pan on his tricycle has it, and every Tom up till Harry wants to have it. Some of the city youngsters swear by their set of attractive bare metal.
Did one of them say, "driving without one would be equivalent of vehicle malfunction"! Ankush Anand, a young advocate is bang on when he says, "It's the accessory for guys. Just like girls splurge on their wardrobe, it's our version of adding bling to our lives." Speaking of which, bling that is, what makes the accessory (oops! or should we say necessary) a hit with the youngsters is the sheer cosmetic appeal. No wonder alloys are now being offered on even economy cars, compared to a decade earlier where they were not an option on inexpensive vehicles. Harshdeep Doda, managing director, Cinevalley Management, questions the obvious, "Is it an accessory any more? Having a set of alloy wheels is rather a must. These days, just about everyone has them on their vehicles. Even then, not having that bare metallic touch on your tyres is not an option." As for the size and the style, options galore, though chrome ones are the latest rage. Says Caran Pawar, of Gippa Wheels-10, "You have them starting from as meagre as Rs 15,000 and they go up till Rs 4 lakh." Larger alloys are what we witness the most on the roads, despite the fact that they slow down the car. Shares Caran, "It doesn't affect the fuel efficiency of one's vehicle provided you have a perfect size alloy according to the vehicle. But if you go for oversized ones, then it does affect your car. On the whole, it lends stability to the vehicle due to width. The maximum size they come in is 20 to 22 inches." How many youngsters go in for the oversized accessory, your guess is as good as ours! Shrugs Karan Kakria, a city-based builder, opines, "I don't know why they are a hit with the boys. Guess that's to do with the psychology that 'the meaner the machine, the better it is.' And they certainly lend that rugged mean look to the vehicle." He adds, "If the alloys are slightly oversized, for instance if the recommended size is 13 to 14 inches and one goes in for 17 inch alloys, they can certainly mar the vehicle." Is it a must in his vehicles? "Absolutely! I have ensured I have them in all my cars." Negatives no bar. Laughs Ankush, "They do decrease the fuel efficiency. Affect suspension too, in fact life of the tyre reduces by as much as 10,000 kms." Even then? He winks, "Are there any price tags for passion? We guess that answers all the raised brows. manpriya@tribunemail.com |
Less is more
The 2/ 2 rubia blouses have come a long way to sinewy hemlines, slender stitches, fitted silhouettes, deep necklines and chic styles. Though the trend spells designer devise, in the 10 Century AD, the blouse was more of a tube top, which later evolved into a backless and had strings attached at the back. A trip down south or even to desert land of Rajasthan would show pictures of women with heavily embroidered long backless cholis and short blouses with capped sleeves. In the modern era, with designers endorsing the sari as a classy contemporary outfit, the blouse hogs the limelight at all fashion shows. For today's experimental woman, this one piece of attire adds oodles of charm to her outfit. "From noodle strapped blouse to chic embossed embellishments to a 20 inch backless blouse, innovation is a vital part of designing a blouse," says Babi Grewal, owner of Babi's, a boutique in Sector 8. She said, "To give an unconventional look to a traditional sari blouse one can go for trendy strapless cholis or halter-neck blouses. Such styles not only make you feel young and radiant attract a lot of attention." However, the latest in the trend is a tube top style or a backless blouse with full sleeves. There is no limit to adding a dash of style in a blouse. A fashionable twist can make or mar a sari. A plain sari can look wonderful with a smart blouse, and a sensual sari can look disastrous with a badly styled blouse. And this season it's a mix 'n' match of fabrics that is doing well. "From velvet to brocade teamed with chiffon and even crepe the trend is more of knotted, choli style, sleeveless, noodle strap, broad strap, heavily embroidered, zardosi worked blouses," said Simple Kaur, owner of Simple's in Sector 35. "A sequined sleeveless blouse is basic and should be a part of every woman's wardrobe," says Pooja Sharma, fashion designer who runs her boutique in Sector 35. She said, "With fusion becoming the latest buzzword, even a bikini top can pass of as a blouse." Back magic
When wearing a deep neck or a backless blouse remember your back should look as good as your face. So, make-up and some treatment for your back is must. Back polishing is one option. This treatment not only removes the tan but leaves the back glowing. For makeup you can go for tattoos and perfume shine. |
You could say Abhishek Bachchan is acting funny with wife Aishwarya — that's because the couple are starring in their first comedy together called Ladies And Gentlemen. "I was very keen to do a comedy after a spate of more serious films and also Aishwarya and I haven't done a comedy together, so I'm excited about this film," Abhishek said in an interview. To be produced and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film is slated for a 2012 release and is set to go on the floors in the first week of July this year. "It's a great script, very funny and Raj-ji is directing it. We've been very keen to work together for a long time. I'm very happy that we will be finally working together," he said. In the film, Abhishek plays a guy with an insatiable roving eye and Aishwarya sportingly allows her husband to do so. When asked to give more details, the 35-year-old said: "It wouldn't be correct to speak about the film at this juncture." In the last two years, he has only worked in serious movies like Paa, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey and Dum Maaro Dum. Abhishek and Aishwarya, who tied the knot in 2007, teamed up for the first time on screen for the 2001 movie Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke. Three years later Rohan Sippy roped them in for his directorial debut Kuch Naa Kaho and then JP Dutta made Umrao Jaan (2006) with the two — all these films didn't do well. Their first big hit as a couple was Mani Ratnam's Guru (2007), followed by Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj. In Sanjay Gadhvi's hit action thriller Dhoom 2, they shared the screen, but not as a couple. Aishwarya also made a special appearance in the hit song Kajrare in the Abhishek starrer Bunty Aur Babli. They were last seen on screen in Raavan, which was declared a dud. Abhishek, whose Game bombed at the box office, is elated with the positive response to Dum Maaro Dum. "I haven't had the time to sit down and reflect on the film. But I think youth have really connected with it. I always said Rohan has always made very cool films. The script by Shridhar and an all-round great team performance I think has worked for the film," he added. — IANS |
Soha puts her thinking cap
Soha Ali Khan rates Goutam Ghosh and Aparna Sen as her favourites among Bengali filmmakers and also plans to consolidate her 'thinking actress' image in Bollywood by working with top-notch directors like Sudhir Mishra.
The actress says she was all set to star in Aparna's Goyenar Baksho (the jewellery box) but it fell through for reasons not within her control. "I am willing to work with Aparna Sen as I count her among my favourites. We were supposed to work in Goyenar Bakso together but unfortunately it got stuck. If she revives the film or offers me any of her future projects, I will be happy," Soha said. "I would also love to work with Goutam Ghose in future, if a suitable role comes my way," said the actress, who was in the city to launch Ruptiti Creations event. The petite star has bagged a major role in Deepa Mehta's Winds of Change, based on Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children but is not ready to reveal much. "I am very enthusiastic about the experience as the film is based on such a literary work. But sadly my contract doesn't permit me to shed more light on my roles or anything else," says Soha, who is reportedly playing the role of a woman called Jamila. However, she is more forthright about her appreciation for Deepa as a filmmaker of international repute. "One of the most admired film makers who handles delicate situations, understandings and human relationships in her own sensuous way," is how Soha puts her experience of working with Mehta. Asked if she felt it was more at ease to work with women directors, down from Life Goes On maker Sangeeta Dutta to Deepa Mehta or Aparna, Soha said, "I must say these things cannot be slotted in genders. From Sangeeta to Deepa, from Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra to Sudhir Mishra, every director is different. Soha believes that Mehra's Rang De Basanti was a turning point in her Bollywood career also counts Khoya Khoya Chand (by Mishra) as among her favourites in Hindi film industry. "I am open to work with debutant makers if the role, the script and the execution is interesting. Am very positive about two upcoming ventures Soundtrack and Chemistry by directors Neerav Ghosh and Sai Kabir," she said. Asked if Chemistry will dwell on the 'chemistry of life' Soha said, "It is a youthful romantic film with the zest of life and there are comic moments thrown in." Soha made her debut in Bengali film Iti Srikanto based om a Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel and Hindi film debut with Dil Maange More. The actress, who has watched Satyajit Ray's Devi time and again among other works, rates her mother's portrayal as the most favourite one. "I rate mom's role in Devi as my most favourite," Soha says when reminded about the similarites between her look in Rituparno's Antramahal opposite Jackie Shroff and Sharmila's in Devi. — PTI |
Kangna wants Mr Bright
After two unsuccessful relationships in Bollywood (one with Aditya Panscholi and the other with Adhyayan Suman), Kangna has decided that she does not want to date a man from Bollywood. Ideal man
I want my ideal man to be more intelligent than me, more successful than me, and better-looking than me! I would rather date investment bankers, painters, or doctors. I think I might get a man who is more intelligent or better looking than me but I doubt I will find a guy who is as successful as me at the age of 23. I do not find any actors hot. I think the man who is right for me will woo me and pamper me and win me over. Past relationships
I learnt a lot from my past relationships and they helped me grow. I was only 17 when I started in Bollywood. I have come a long way. I have no regrets at all and I think I am an achiever in every way. I have no time for a relationship right now. I will be open about my relationship when I get into one. I have no reason to hide anything. Movies
I think people are loving me in my new, normal avatar. It was very exhausting for me to play those psychotic and neurotic roles. I am only 23 and I need to have fun! I love my job. I am glad that I am getting fun roles to do now and directors think I can pull them off. I believe in myself and my talent and that is why I am as successful as I am today. Obviously, people like this change too as otherwise, Tanu Weds Manu would not have worked. People like seeing happy people on screen. |

Are you wasting your time?
Ranadeep Moitra Strength and Conditioning coach, Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS, a workout routine and fat loss expert, feels that cardio is a lame form of exercise and a complete waste of time. He says doing cardio signifies inefficiency and a waste of time. I agree somewhat with his observation. Here is why I think that cardio is a bad idea. Most people hate doing cardio Have you ever met a person in the gym who is excited about doing cardio? Hey, don't get me wrong. I love my endurance training and still do a kilometer around 4 minutes. But I don't call my routine, 'cardio'. I have a small group I train outdoors, sometimes on the track, sometimes in a park, often, on any free land available. But we don't do, ‘cardio’! We train our guts out, seldom ever running more than 6-8 minutes in a complete session. Contrast this to what some people do in the gym where a routine cardio session lasts for 30- 45 minutes. No wonder people hate doing cardio. People are obsessed with calorie counters Most people get obsessive compulsive with cardio. All they can think of is how many calories they have burnt and how much food that means they can eat. People think you have to do 30 minutes of cardio to stay healthy Your diet is far more important for cardiovascular health than your exercise regime. Besides, far from being healthy, long-duration cardio, actually down-sizes your lung and heart's reserve capacity. Reserve capacity means that your heart has the ability to pump more blood, faster in times of stress. Reserve capacity for your lungs allows them to deal with high exertion like lifting, carrying, running or going up stairs. By performing at an easy task for 30 to 45 minutes you are sending a signal to your heart and lung to become fuel-efficient and pump blood economically. So you become a great fuel saving machine but when you have to deliver power you fall flat on your face (sometimes, almost literally!) In other words, you don't have the capacity to do so. Cardio keeps you fat!
Where do you usually find the fattest people in the gym? No marks for guessing. They usually spend their time in the cardio section. A lot of their time! Long-duration cardio burns fat during your workout. Sounds ideal, right? Guess again…. On the contrary, this sends a message to your brain that you need a reserve of fat available at all times-so the next time you work out, you will have something to throw in the fire. This self-defeating vicious cycle will naturally ensure that your body makes fat every time you finish exercising. That's why you have such a hard time losing fat at the gym. Every time you burn fat during exercise, your body reacts by making more fat. Road Rage
Each one of us has experienced that irresistible urge to doze off at the driving wheel while on an exhausting trip. The resulting scenario could be disastrous for not only you, but also your co-passengers and other travellers on road!
According to a recent study conducted by the University Health Network and the University of Toronto Sleep Research Unit, driver fatigue continues to be a serious road safety issue accounting for 26 per cent of the road accidents across the globe. Though anti-sleep security systems sales have risen sharply in markets like Canada, USA and Britain, India is still to witness the required sincerity towards the issue. A whole lot of devices - ranging from the ones that are fitted to the driver's ear and track the nod-tilting angle to buzz the warning alarm to the motion cameras that track the fatigue levels - are easily available even in India. Research is on to even track the retina movements to further strengthen the anti-sleep security systems. Even car manufacturers across the globe have dealt with this issue with utmost care and have included some amazing anti-sleep security measures in the car interiors. Some of the noteworthy systems are Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist that uses the car's engine control unit to monitor changes in steering and other driving habits and alerts the driver accordingly. On the other hand, Lexus placed a camera in the dashboard that tracks the driver's face, rather than the vehicle's behaviour, and alerts the driver if his or her movements seem to indicate sleep. Saab uses two cameras in the cockpit to monitor the driver's eye movement and alerts the driver with a text message in the dash, followed by a stern audio message if he still seems sleepy, whereas Volvo's Driver Alert Control is a lane-departure system that monitors and corrects the vehicle's position on the road, then alerts the driver if it detects any drifting between lanes. Going a step ahead, Volvo has launched Pedestrian Detection with full auto-brake system in its S60 variant that detects pedestrians in front of the car, warn the driver and automatically apply full braking power if the driver does not respond in time. Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake can avoid a collision with a pedestrian at speeds of up to 35 km/h if the driver does not react in time. Volvo has also pioneered Adaptive Cruise Control with Cue Assist, which helps the driver to maintain a safe distance with the vehicle in front. This marvellous cruise control technology works at speed from 0-200 kmph. Though the data is not very organised as far as India is concerned, still a major segment of accidents caused due to human error includes drivers dozing off while managing the wheel of life for many! With car manufacturers coming forward with these features, we, as consumers, would also need to understand their importance and take a step forward for these safety features. Flip side of depression
Depression has become something of a modern-day epidemic, with some experts arguing that it can be a positive life-changing experience that leaves people tougher, more resilient and more creative. Some even argue that depression may not be an illness at all, but an evolutionary survival mechanism that helps us cope with life's crises by forcing us to reassess our priorities.Eleven years ago, Helen McNallen suffered an episode of depression so severe she attempted to take her own life.
So it may seem extraordinary that the 43-year-old former city trader now devotes most of her time to running a website she has started up called www.depressioncanbefun.com. She set it up because she is convinced that her mental health crisis, which was triggered by the pressures of her job, has, in the long run, transformed her life for the better."I'm glad I had depression," says Helen, from Sheffield in South Yorkshire." Now, I feel very lucky to be able to spend my time helping other people. It was a turning point in my life," she added. The controversial idea, that depression might do some of us good in the long run, is backed up by a recent study .It analysed the effects of depression on 165 people by looking at how well they coped with life's stresses before and after their mental breakdown. The study found that the majority had more vitality, improved social lives and were performing better at work. But if suffering mental health problems really can be beneficial. — ANI |
Now a kissing machine!
In a bid to enhance long-distance relationships, Japanese researchers have developed a kissing machine that lets users 'transmit the feeling of a kiss' over the Internet. The device, created by the Kajimoto Laboratory at the University of Electro-Communications, consists of a hardware receptacle that is placed into the mouth.
Then the software records your tongue motion and transmits them to the other connected device, which moves accordingly. The lab is still working on recreating other elements of a kiss other than tongue movement - like breathing and the sense of taste. "The elements of a kiss include the sense of taste, the manner of breathing, and the moistness of the tongue. If we can recreate all of those I think it will be a really powerful device," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted them as explaining in a video showcasing the device prototype. "If you have a popular entertainer use this device and record it, that could be hugely popular if you offer it to fans," they concluded. —ANI |
It's rocking
It has the trademark Sufi touch, which Rabbi Shergill is popular for. Bandya Tu like his earlier tracks is a song for all times. It provides the much-needed break from numbers that solely depend on music videos to climb the popularity charts. Know it from music lovers, why they are humming Bandya Tu from the Punjabi film, Dharti. Pleasant surprise
Amidst the umpteen item numbers, this motivational song, Bandya Tu comes as a pleasant surprise. The lyrics are so amazing that you are enticed to listen to the complete song. It’s not everyday that we have a Punjabi movie come up with a track that doesn't have its trademark rhythm and bhangra. The beats are fast paced, the music is fresh, another reason why the song is as hit as the movie. Vikram Randhawa, B Tech student Song connects
When it's Rabbi Shergill, the song has to be different. Although, he doesn't sing in films, whenever he does, he gives a number that everybody easily connects with. Bandya Tu from the movie Dharti is as good as his earlier tracks Tere Bin or Bulla Ki Jaana. The song will be a hit with all music lovers, whether they watch the movie or not. Richa Sharma, a class XII student Originality counts
After a long time, a Punjabi track has become an instant hit. The best part is that it's original. It's not a redo of a song that was already a hit like Lehmber Hussainpuri's Kadi Saddi Gali. Bandya Tu will set the trend for more sufi pop songs in Punjabi films. The song is a hit also for its inspirational lyrics. Sahil Sharma, a private firm employee. As told to Ashima Sehajpal |

the year ahead
If your birthday is May 4...
Your basic number is four. If you add 4-5-2011, you will get four. The year's number is also four. What does it indicate for the future? You may feel that the world is moving too fast this year. Do not back out on any social engagement. Resist pressure from others while trying something new. You could, though, enjoy time alone or with one easygoing person who won't ruffle your feathers. In 2011, your health could suffer from stress. The stressful rhythm, the sudden overturn of values, the incredible amount of work you suddenly deal with, might have repercussions on the abdominal organs, putting you in a general state of discomfort and indisposition. Friends will remain cooperative in any kind of networking situation, be it financial, career, personal or romantic. Old companions will be quite helpful. You should monitor and control your strong desires and expensive tastes during festive season. Those who have credits and loans will feel the heat. Businessmen might make profits in their investment, mostly due to rich business partners. Kunal Basu (May 4, 1956) is author of English fiction who has written three acclaimed novels — The Opium Clerk, The Miniaturist, and Racists.
