Brilliant MI down kings

Mumbai produce all-round show to win by 23 runs
Sachin, Rayudu shine with bat
Marsh lone ranger for Kings XI

Mumbai, May 2
Mumbai Indians bounced back in splendid fashion after a loss in their previous game by beating Kings XI Punjab by 23 runs and regain the pole position in the Indian Premier League here today.

Batting first, half centuries from skipper Sachin Tendulkar and Ambati Rayudu helped them score a competitive 159 for five in 20 overs. The MI bowlers then did a fine job in restricting the visitors to 136 for eight despite valiant effort from Shaun Marsh who scored 61 off just 47 balls.

Barring a fine innings from Marsh, who struck eight fours, and his 72-run second wicket partnership in 60 balls with opener Paul Valthaty (33 in 38 balls), there was little of note in the Kings XI chase resulting in their fourth defeat in seven matches.

For home team, Harbhajan Singh – who opened the attack – grabbed two for 25 along with Lasith Malinga (two for 19) and Munaf Patel (two for 18).

Man of the match Kieron Pollard, who made a brisk 20 in 11 balls and took two catches, and Andrew Symonds also grabbed a wicket each.

Earlier, asked to bat first Tendulkar and Rayudu added 95 runs in 72 balls for the second wicket to guide MI to a winning score.

While Rayudu was the more aggressive of the duo and got his runs in 37 balls with eight fours and one six, Tendulkar struck a six and three fours in his 45-ball essay.

Both were caught in the deep trying to give a charge to the KXIP bowlers.

Later, Kieron Pollard, who has hardly got a chance to bat in earlier matches, made a quick-fire 20 with two sixes and a four. Rohit Sharma made a quick 18 in 11 balls before falling off the penultimate ball.

Andrew Symonds (4) remained unconquered at the end with T Suman (0) who did not face a ball.

For the visitors, leg spinner Piyush Chawla and medium pacer Ryan Harris grabbed two wickets each while left-arm slow bowler Bipul Sharma accounted for the other wicket.

When Punjab chased, Mumbai too, like their rivals had done, commenced the bowling with Harbhajan Singh and the move succeeded. The offie trapped Gilchrist leg before when the left hander tried to sweep the bowler.

The fifth ball strike with only one run on the board put Kings XI on the back foot, but the home team suffered a setback when Rayudu was injured while fielding, appearing to have twisted his right knee. He later came back to keep wickets after first-choice stumper Davy Jacobs suffered a thumb injury and had to leave the field. — PTI

Maken’s poser to IOA, NSFs
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 2
Sports Minister Ajay Maken reiterated here today that the Government had no intention of interfering in the functioning and autonomy of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the National Sports Federations (NSFs), adding that his ministry only wanted "transparency in their functioning and their accountability to the sports lovers and the people of the country".

Maken asked the IOA and the NSFs to suggest "in black and white" as to which were the specific provisions in the draft Bill that were tantamount to interference in their functioning and autonomy.

He pointed out that the NSFs, who represent the nation at various international fora, were "in a way repository of the faith and prestige" of the people of India, and it was only logical and in national interest that they conformed to transparent and universally accepted best practices of sports governance.

The minister said the reported opposition of the IOA and the NSF representatives to the proposed draft Sports Development Bill as being "interfering" and "agonistic to the autonomy" of the functioning of the apex Olympic body and the sports federations was a mere perception and he would await feedback from the designated committee, chaired by Justice Mukul Mudgal and comprising badminton ace Prakash Padukone and athlete Ashwini Nachappa, apart from the Sports Ministry officials.

Maken asked how a legislation that aimed at bringing about transparency in the election procedures through secret ballot and pre-determined declared collages, which would mandatorily have at least 25 per cent of sportspersons as voters, could in any way result in interference in the autonomy of the sports federations and the IOA.

"It could not be comprehended as to how the NSFs being brought under the purview of the Right to Information (RTI) Act as public authorities and ensuring their accountability to the people of the country and sports lovers would amount to interference in their functioning" he added.

Maken said by seeking to prohibit nepotism through age and tenure norms, which are in total conformity with the best practices followed and recommended by the top international sports federations, the IOC would only add to the NSFs' acceptance and credibility, rather than undermine their autonomy.

Deccan play KKR in crucial match

KKR’s Manoj Tiwary has been their batting mainstay
KKR’s Manoj Tiwary has been their batting mainstay

Hyderabad, May 2
Former champions Deccan Chargers face an uphill battle as they take on a spirited Kolkata Knight Riders here tomorrow.Chargers’ survival in the Indian Premier League is at stake as they have played eight matches so far and have managed to win only three of them.

The roller-coaster campaign puts them in the lower half of the points table with six points.

Significantly, four other IPL teams also have six points and Deccan have another half a dozen matches at hand to rise in the table.

But the task is not easy as Kumar Sangakkara's men go into tomorrow's match after a 19-run loss to Chennai Super Kings last night.

RCB’s Chris Gayle

he Sri Lankan was quick to highlight the need for a winning streak in the later half of the event after the crushing loss last night. "It is pretty simple.

We have six games, we have to win five of them to stay alive in this competition. It is a great challenge.

We are playing well, but we have to convert that extra 10 or five per cent to try and win a game," he said.

In the slam-bang format that is Twenty20, a solid batting line-up is a must for any team and Deccan have been struggling on that front.

The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Sunny Sohal, Bharat Chipli and Sangakkara himself have not done enough to intimidate rival bowlers. — PTI

I am on my road to recovery: Nehra

New Delhi, May 2
The "pain" of not being able to play in the World Cup final will always be there, but Ashish Nehra wants to forget the disappointing last month in his bid to make an international comeback at the earliest.

"I have just come back from Australia last week. My finger surgery went off well. My recovery has been pretty good. I was at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) doing my rehabilitation work. I have also started bowling in the nets and haven't faced any problems," Nehra told PTI today.

However, the senior pro is unlikely to feature in the remaining matches for Pune Warriors India who have lost six out of their eight games in the IPL. "Playing in IPL is out of question right now. Although I have started bowling, I still have a slight pain in my fractured finger. At this point of time, batting and fielding are still a problem. So I would prefer to get fully fit before making myself available for selection," the left-arm speedster said.

Realistically, Nehra is eyeing to make a comeback in the ODI team that will tour Caribbean after IPL, but the next couple of weeks will determine whether that will be possible or not. "I will be again going back to NCA for two-week rehab program. The physios and the doctor will monitor my progress.” — PTI

Kochi Tuskers add to Delhi Daredevils’ misery
M.S.Unnikrishnan
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 2
Kochi Tuskers Kerala exacted revenge for their home defeat when they mauled Delhi Daredevils by seven wickets in an Indian Premier League Season IV match at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here tonight.

Chasing Daredevils’ total of 140, Tuskers raced to the target, scoring 142 for three in 15 overs as the hosts suffered their fifth home defeat in six matches and sixth defeat in nine to yet again slip to the bottom of the ladder.

The victory came as a whiff of fresh air for Kochi Tuskers after suffering three successive defeats at home in Kochi.

Chasing an asking rate of seven runs per over, Kochi Tuskers got off to a blazing start when Brendon McCullum and Michael Klinger put on 61 in 5.1 overs. McCullum slammed Morne Morkel for three boundaries in the second over and then ravaged Umesh Yadav for two sixes and two fours in the fourth over to turn the match on its head.

Yadav was clobbered for 23 runs in the over as Tuskers took the game away from Daredevils. Though Yadav had his revenge catching McCullum off Morkel for 37 (19b,5x4,2x6), the Kiwi's knock proved to be a clincher as the visitors lost Klinger and captain Mahela Jayawardene cheaply.

But Parthiv Patel and Brad Hodge pounded the Delh bowling to drive Tuskers to victory with five overs to spare. The scoring had slumped after Tuskers lost two quick wickets but Parthiv turned the match around when he blasted Agarkar for two fours in the 11th over and Morkel for two successive boundaries in the next over.

Brad Hodge greeted Yogesh Nagar with a huge six and then a four as the bowler was clobbered for 15 runs to hasten the demise of Delhi Daredevils for whom nothing went right.

The hosts lost the toss, then lost openers David Warner and Virender Sehwag cheaply and then their bowlers were blasted to smithreens as Tuskers got back into their winning ways.

Delhi Daredevils' dangerous dalliance with the Ferozeshah Kotla ground continued when they were restricted to 140 for 6 in 20 overs.

Kochi Tuskers captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and put Delhi in as he wisely decided to bowl on a wicket with a greenish top. Though David Warner and Virender Sehwag got off to their usual flamboyant start, the Kochi Tuskers' bowlers eventually got on top with some controlled bowling to derive benefit from the pace and bounce generated by the wicket.

The Tuskers also fielded well to cut short many intended boundaries to slow down the run flow. When Sehwag was launching into a visious assault, he was consumed by debutant Prasanth Parmeswaran, whom Sehwag had welcomed with a huge six over the long-off fence.

The Kerala Ranji Trophy bowling spearhead, instead of getting rattled by Sehwag's big stroke, eventually got the Delhi captain's scalp off the third ball when he forced Sehwag to edge into the hands of wiket-keeper Parthiv Patel. Sehwag had begun in style, carting R.P.Singh's second ball of the first over past point, and then pulled the last ball of the over to mid-wicket, but fell to a rookie bowler who was making his IPL debut.

Later Parameshwaran also got the big wicket of Venugopala Rao to make it a memorable debut. One wicket down for 21, Daredevils could have still pulled off a substantial score but David Warner too fell quickly, as S Sreesanth took revenge for punishing him for a square-driven four. Warner went for a big pull shot this time, but the ball ballooned off to give a nice catch to Vinay Kumar at mid-on.

‘Dangerous to drop names in match-fixing’

Chennai, May 2
Reacting sharply to Hashan Tillakaratne's allegation that Sri Lankan players have been fixing matches since 1992, former captain Kumar Sangakkara said instead of throwing names around, the ex-player should work with the ICC's anti-corruption unit to rout out the menace if it is there.

Speaking in the post match media conference after his IPL side Deccan Chargers' 19-run loss to Chennai Super Kings here, the Deccan Chargers captain said, "Hashan has played the game for years and he's captained Sri Lanka as well. So it's interesting to see what he has to say and if he has anything more than allegations." "It's dangerous to throw names around, he should work very closely with the ACSU of the ICC and the home authorities to ensure that something's done about it if there is any foundation to those claims but beyond that I don't think it makes any big sense to the players playing now." About the defeat last night, Sangakkara said, "We had a few opportunities that went abegging, which was unfortunate.

"The guys tried their best to take those chances, but unfortunately we couldn't take some of the catches that came to us. But that's the way the game goes, maybe 10 to 15 runs too many but we were in the chase right up to the 15th, 16th over, when we fell away." Asked about the nature of the strip, Sangakkara said, "I think the wicket in the second half didn't turn as much as we thought it would. It was a bit on the slower side. It played much better than we thought it would." About the next few matches, his answer was "We have six games, we have to win about five of them to stay alive in this competition. It's a great challenge. We're playing well, but we have to convert that extra 10 or five percent to try and win a game." Man of the match Albie Morkel said he was "very surprised" not to see compatriot Dale Steyn among his opposition. Steyn was one of the four players rested by Deccan.

"I think Dale and Ishant, in the last couple of games formed a formidable bowling pair and them not playing one of the world's best Test and One-day bowlers. But they have a couple of back-to-back games in Hyderabad, so maybe they're saving him for that." Morkel was miffed when a scribe asked him as to whether he had been able to snap his "mediocre run with the bat." "I think to use the word 'mediocre' is unfair. If you look at the position I bat in, I only get (about) four balls to face, so for me it's not about only myself. It's also about whether I can do one or two good things for the team and help them win." — PTI
