Rohit powers mi win
Hyderabad, April 24 There couldn't have been a better birthday gift than a MI win for Sachin Tendulkar who turned 38 today. After posting a challenging total of 172 for four, MI restricted Chargers to 135 for eight as they now lead the points tally with 10 points from six outings. Rohit (56 not out, 34 balls, 5x4, 3x6) and Symonds (44 not out, 33 balls, 4x4, 1x6) added 102 runs off only 65 balls for the unbroken fifth wicket after MI were tottering at 70 for four at the start of the 10th over. Incidentally, the duo played together for Chargers during the first three editions. The duo thrashed Dale Steyn and Dan Christian for 16 and 24 runs respectively to score 40 off the last two overs. Christian went for 48 runs from his four wicketless overs. While chasing, the Chargers lost wickets at regular intervals. The MI bowlers led by Lankan slinger Lasith Malinga (4-0-9-3) kept the batsmen under wraps. The bowlers were also backed by some nice fielding that saw a couple home team batsmen being run-out. Save skipper Kumar Sangakkara (34) who was cleaned up by a low fulltoss from Malinga, the other batsmen lacked application. Malinga also got his trademark yorker going that castled Shikhar Dhawan (25). Davy Jacobs (32, 20 balls, 5x4, 1x6) who was back in the squad opened with Tendulkar. It was Jacobs who started the initial onslaught as MI scored 47 runs in the first five overs before he was caught by Pragyan Ojha off Ishant Sharma's bowling. All eyes were on birthday boy Tendulkar who turned 38 today. Tendulkar today got the 'Orange Cap' back from Paul Valthaty and is now the highest run-getter in the ongoing IPL. Cheered by daugher Sarah and son Arjun who were seen waving MI flags from stands, the legend hit a few crisp boundaries and again looked like making a substancial contribution. But to their utter disappointment, the maestro scored only 28(24 balls, 4x4) before he was holed out in the deep by Steyn off Amit Mishra's bowling. Tendulkar charged out but failed to get to the pitch of a flighted delivery from Mishra as Steyn took a well judged catch at long-on. Tendulkar's dismissal triggered a collapse as MI from 70 for one slumped to 70 for four within a space of six deliveries. Ambati Rayudu (7) who has had a good tournament so far played an ugly sweep shot off Mishra two balls later. Shikhar Dhawan stationed at deep square leg timed his jump to perfection send Rayudu back in the hut. Kieron Pollard who has hardly batted in the tournament was promoted up the order but he tried a delicate paddle shot off Pragyan Ojha's bowling and the ball lobbed up for skipper Sangakkara to take a simple catch. Rohit and Symonds then started a repair job. They were cautious for a couple of overs before they started playing their strokes. Symonds' first boundary was swatted shot off Christian over mid-off. Rohit also played some classy shots as they added 50 runs off only 45 deliveries. Symonds showed his class in the penultimate over bowled by Steyn. He started with a crashing shot over extra cover for four. He followed it up with a six effortlessly hit over long on. Then he took a couple and followed it with another drive through the cover region. If Symonds got 16 runs off the 19th over Rohit got 24 off the last. Not the one to be left behind, Rohit smashed six off Christian over long-on brought the team's 150. Two balls later he hit him over deep mid-wicket for another six and the next ball soared in to the deep square leg stands as Rohit completed his back-to-back fifty. He signed off with a straight drive which also brough the 100 run partnership for the duo. — PTI Scoreboard

Royals break Kochi’s winning run
Jaipur, April 24 Warne's decision to bowl first was vindicated as his bowlers responded to the captain's call to skittle out the Kochi outfit for a paltry 109 in 20 overs at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium here. Shane Watson (49) and Rahul Dravid (44) then came back to set the foundation of their runchase, while Johan Botha (14) and Ross Taylor (2) finished off the game as the Royals reached 111 for two with 5.5 overs to spare. Rajasthan's third win in seven matches snapped Kochi's three-game winning streak and also helped them to jump to the second place in the points table. Earlier, Warne (3/16) removed Brad Hodge, Parthiv Patel and Ravindra Jadeja and was ably supported by Siddharth Trivedi (3/19), Johan Botha (1/19) and Amit Singh (1/26) to set up the win for the Rajasthan outfit. Watson started the runchase with a boundary at point on the first ball of the innings, while Dravid too joined in with a classic on-drive off Vinay Kumar in the next over. The former India skipper picked up two more boundaries, top-eding Vinay in the fifth over and then whipping Murali Muralitharan past mid-on in the next over as Watson played the second fiddle. Watson, who was dropped by Ravindra Jadeja on his own bowling in the eighth over, brought up his second four off Raiphi Gomez when he clobbered him down the ground across the long-on boundary. In the 10th over, Dravid and Watson picked up Jadeja for special treatment, blasting the spinner for a six and four respectively. But the Indian run himself out in the next over, looking for an unnecessary second run after pushing the ball to the third man in the 11th over. Watson then took the onus on himself and amassed 16 runs off Muralitharan, which included two sixes, before picking two more fours off Jadeja to take Rajasthan on the threshold of victory. But the Australian missed his half-century by a whisker after being cleaned up by Jadeja in the fifth ball of the over, which he tried to work towards the leg side, only to see his leg-stump shattered. — PTI Scoreboard

CSK aim to end losing streak, up against Pune Warriors
Chennai, April 24 Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Chennai are second from bottom in the points table after three losses in five matches, all the defeats coming away from home, and would be seeking to regain their form in front of adoring home fans. Chennai have another eight matches to go apart from tomorrow's tie against Pune. Last year too, they were facing elimination close to the end of league fixtures, but their fortunes turned for the better as they went on to win the title. Apart from their two wins against Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai have lost to Kochi Tuskers, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. But despite the losses, coach Stephen Fleming has ruled out tinkering with the combination much. Chennai's batting has revolved around Dhoni, Mike Hussey, Suresh Raina and Srikkanth Aniruddha and the quartet has delivered on most occasions. The team's worries are mostly focused on the bowling department. Sri Lankan off-spinner Suraj Randiv is yet to find his rhythm and though he has claimed five wickets from four matches, he has also given away 120 runs in 15 overs so far. R Ashwin, who was impressive in the earlier editions, is also lacking in thrust and has claimed only four wickets conceding 143 runs of his quota of overs from five innings. As for the Pune Warriors, captain Yuvraj Singh has worked harder for points, as they too have lost two of their last matches. They rely heavily on Yuvraj and the aggressive Jesse Ryder to build the innings and this over-reliance on the duo probably cost them in the last two matches. On the positive side, Robin Uthappa struck form in the loss to Mumbai Indians and would be aiming to continue from where he left off, when he faces Chennai's bowlers. Bowling is Pune's weak link as the team does not feature a single established star that can intimidate the opposition by his sheer presence. The likes of Wayne Parnell have been economical but have not captured many wickets.

Confident on regaining momentum: Marsh
Chennai, April 24 "We have sorted out a couple of areas of concern, where we let ourselves down in two earlier matches. But we are taking the match positively and are confident on regaining our momentum," Marsh said on the eve of his team's match tomorrow. "We had a great start to the championship, winning the first two matches. We lost the third, which we could have won and against Mumbai, we had them on the mat at 16 for three before we let them run away with the match. You can't afford to do that against a team like Mumbai," he said. The Warriors have played four matches and won two and the coach was relieved to have Manish Pandey in the ranks for tomorrow's tie against defending champions Chennai, who are languishing at the eighth place in the point table. "It's good news that he will be ready for the next match. He is a good T20 player and a good fielder. We will decide about his inclusion in the evening," he said. Marsh said all the IPL teams are equally balanced and that was the reason for so many close matches. "All teams are even, and that's the reason why we are seeing a lot of close matches. All franchisees have done a lot of homework before picking their players and hence they have players of all sorts — bowlers, batsmen and all-rounders — in the team," he said.

Tendulkar turns 38
Hyderabad, April 24 Tendulkar, who sits on such a huge pile of runs and records which any contemporary batsman would find nearly impossible to exceed, is not known to be flamboyant in his celebrations. If he is not busy on the field, an intensely private Tendulkar prefers to blow the candles just in the company of his two kids, wife Anjali and other family members. No celebrations
Tendulkar, who landed in Hyderabad late last night with wife Anjali and two kids, was confined to his room at the Grand Kakatiya hotel. "He did not even have breakfast. No one was allowed to enter his room," a hotel manager said. There was speculation since yesterday that the Mumbai Indians captain would not celebrate his birthday in view of Baba's health condition. News of Baba's demise this morning apparently came as a shock to Tendulkar. A 'Do Not Disturb' sign was hung on his hotel room door since the news of Baba's demise came and Tendulkar did not even meet his teammates, the hotel manager said. Cricket fraternity wishes Sachin
The cricket fraternity today saluted Sachin Tendulkar, who turned 38 today, for the joy and happiness he gave to the countrymen with his achievements and wished him a long innings in his career and life. “As a kid, I have always looked up to him. I have grown up watching him play cricket. He is a great player and great human being. He always helps his teammates with his vast knowledge of the game. I want to wish him a very very happy birthday and hope he plays for a long long time to come,” said Virat Kohli. “You are the very very very best ... keep going strong paaji ... we all love u ... happy birthday ... may God be with u and ur family ... love always,” tweeted fast bowler S Sreesanth. From Coventry, with love!
Rurka Kalan, April 24 James Keenan, Michelle Stanley and Steve Freur brought with them not only priceless experience of technical know-how of the game, but also world renowned ‘Smart Speed’ technology, which allows them to assess and determine factors like sprint speed and agility in players. They conducted camps with coaches, where they helped the staff at YFC understand the dos and dont’s of coaching in modern day football. During their week-long stay with YFC, the Coventry University team invested heavily with their time in trying to teach the kids the importance of being physically sharp, and at your best. In their own words, their initial aim was to survey the current player standards and compare them to English players of the same age. They did so through a battery of tests including sprint times, agility, lower body power, body composition and strength tests. Senior scientist James Keenan, looking quite impressed with what the kids had accomplished in the little time they had said, ‘I am impressed with the coaches and players willingness to learn, adapt and implement changes, at YFC. The project here is exceptional in its achievements already and the dedication of the staff is inspiring. I look forward to hopefully continuing consultation with them to help them achieve their long-term goals.” It has not been easy for the three sports scientists to come to a remote corner of a country and explain things these kids did not even know existed. Michelle Stanley adds, “I feel that we have been welcomed into the club and allowed to enhance the children’s development. It was a little difficult in the beginning, but sports, dedication and the right attitude, they have the same signs the world over. The coaches have supported ideas that we have implemented and took on board what we have been saying.” Steve Freur also adds, “Like with any sport, be in India or the UK, the key is to create a successful athlete is provide a fruitful environment with a proper support network of coaches in place. I feel after spending a week at YFC Rarka Kalan I have seen that the club has what it takes to create successful footballers.” |
