city Beautiful, but not entertaining
With Chandigarh failing to keep pace with other cities, many of which have jumped on the modernisation bandwagon offering a variety of entertainment avenues, The Tribune reporter Pradeep Sharma speaks to a cross-section of city residents to know if the scrapped mega projects would have pushed the city into the metro league
Though numerically the young population may be growing by leaps and bounds with an upswing in the local economy due to retail revolution and service sector, over half a century after it came into being, the ‘City Beautiful’, as it is cliched, continues to offer little in terms of entertainment options for visitors and residents alike. The city residents playing host to guests from metros invariably cut a sorry figure, with Chandigarh failing to keep pace with other cities, many of which have jumped on the modernisation bandwagon offering a variety of entertainment avenues.

A 23-year-old labourer was killed after he fell from an under construction building at Dhakoli village here this afternoon. The victim was identified as Nane Ram from UP.

Overloaded rickshaws, but who cares?
Despite police orders and media pictures and reports on the violation of safety norms for schoolchildren, it is a common sight to see overloaded rickshaws and autorickshaws ferrying students in the tricity. Last week, a Tribune correspondent stopped alongside a rickshaw carrying students in the southern belt. Two children had climbed the roof of the rickshaw and were yelling. 600 households without water for 4 days
Kharar, April 24
The water supply in the Sunny Enclave area of Kharar has been affected for the past four days. Around 600 households have not got water supply owing to technical problems with the tubewell installed.

Two arrested for cheating

The police claimed to have arrested two persons involved in a cheating case. According to the police, the accused were running an entertainment company in the name of Seven Star Entertainment Private Ltd.

Gang of vehicle thieves nabbed

The CIA staff today busted a gang of vehicle thieves following the arrest of five members of a gang who were working as waiters at weddings in the area. The police seized a car and a motorcycle from their possession.

GAIL officials booked for cheating
Chandigarh, April 24
On the directions of a local district and sessions court, the Chandigarh Police registered a cheating case against certain officials of the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), Udyog Bhawan, here on the complaint by the general manager of a Parwanoo-based industry here today.
According to Hardit Singh, SHO of the Sector 17 police station, Ramesh Gupta, general manager of Chemi Plast Industry, Parwanoo, complained against BC Tripathi, chief manager/director, JS Saini, GM, SD Dhiman, GM/zonal manager, and Akash, manager, GAIL, alleging that they invoked bank guarantee of Rs 26,45,930 from the account of the industry and had withdrawn Rs 10,04,000.

Youth slips, dies

A visit to the Rock Garden here proved fatal for 21-year-old Ajay Kumar. He lost his life after he slipped while he was inside a pool fitted with a fountain here this afternoon.
