600 households without water for 4 days
Tribune News Service

Kharar, April 24
The water supply in the Sunny Enclave area of Kharar has been affected for the past four days. Around 600 households have not got water supply owing to technical problems with the tubewell installed.

The area residents have been battling with the problem of water scarcity for the past five months. The colony gets water supply from two overhead water tanks. In December last year, the tubewell of extension number 1 went out of order and the colony became dependent upon single tubewell near the colony’s gurdwara.

Area residents said while many households had not been getting adequate supply of water for the past four months, the situation had become worse since past four days when the lone working tubewell’s pipes started leaking.
People are dependent on water supply from water tankers.

Municipal council officials said the sewerage board has installed a new tubewell at the extension number 1 area and it would soon be made functional.

Golf club poll witnesses low turnout
Counting of votes today
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, April 24
Nine hundred and seven members cast their votes, with a comparative less turnout of defence personnel, in the Chandigarh Golf Club elections here today.

The fate of the presidential candidates, Raja Malvinder Singh and Lt-Col JS Panag, and the executive have been sealed in ballot boxes which will be opened for counting at 9 tomorrow morning.

Compared to last year, the turnout this year was 150 voters less. The outgoing president, BS Gill, was a happy man as the elections were held in a calm and a peaceful atmosphere.

Malvinder Singh and Colonel Panag agreed on this score. Malvinder Singh said: “It was a cool and healthy competition. The atmosphere was never vitiated by either side. I am happy and confident of making it.”

Colonel Panag said: “Everyone was very cooperative. No complaints.” But he felt that the turnout of defence personnel was comparatively less. But he hastened to add that "even if 200 defence votes had been cast, the fight was going to be tough.

At the AGM held earlier, which was attended by a mere 150 members of the 1,800 total strength, the 2010-11 budget was presented by the outgoing team.

On the five-year roll-over plan to improve the fairways and give a facelift to the course, president BS Gill said he gave a synopsis of the plan which would be taken up at the next AGM to be held in May.

This roll-on plan had been supported by Jeev Milkha Singh, who had appealed to all members before the last elections to back the five-year facelift plan.

David Hemstock and Nic Davies, the golf course designers from the UK, were engaged in a six-month trial run to suggest course improvement matters in January 2010. The managing committee seem to be hesitant in placing the plan before the AGM because of the big cost involved. The cost could run into more than Rs 1 crore per annum if the full roll-on plan in implemented.

Cricket
DCM Engg XI lift trophy
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, April 24
An all-round performance by Ravinder Singh (29 runs and 3 wickets for 11) enabled DCM Engg XI to defeat Infosys XI by three runs to win the IXth Bharat Kesho Gupta Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Sector 16 cricket stadium today.

After winning the toss, DCM Engg had a fine start as its openers stitched a 44-run partnership coming off six overs. Jaspreet Singh emerged the top scorer with 41 runs to his credit. DCM seemed to be sailing smoothly to a defensible target when Gourav Kalra turned things around for Infosys. He picked up three wickets in his successive overs and reduced DCM Engg to 87 for 4 in 15 overs. Avinash Dubey and Ravinder Singh tried to get out of the doldrums but tight line and length bowling of opposite team did not allow them a chance to score freely. Ravinder and Avinash scored together 21 runs for the fifth wicket. The next five wickets fell for just 15 runs in nine overs and the whole team were bundled out for 133 runs in 24 overs. For Infosys XI, Gourav Kalra was the pick of the bowlers as he scalped three wickets for 25 runs in his five overs. Nikhil and Sahil Seth picked up two wickets each.

In reply, Infosys XI started off with a bang, scoring 22 runs off the first two overs. Sahil Seth and Parmod Rawat scored briskly and made their intent clear with some big hitting. But the DCM bowlers were quick with their reply and Baljeet Singh took out Sahil in the third over of the inning. Things went downhill for Infosys thereafter as the batsmen failed to find any foothold on the crease. Parmod Rawat was the top scorer for the team with 38 important runs contributed to the total. The bowlers of DCM Engg managed to reduce Infosys XI to 100 for 9 in 19 overs. Requiring 31 runs to win off the next six overs and one wicket in hand, the match seemed to be in DCM's grasp. The tail enders Pankaj Dutt and Gourav came up with a fine 27-run partnership for the last wicket. Needing just four runs to win off the last over the batsmen faltered and Gourav was run out off the second ball of the 25th over. For DCM XI, Ravinder Singh was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up three wickets.
