The virtual world offers a rare liberating experience — uninhibited by physical boundaries like that of the real world. For example, an art exhibition on display at one of the city art galleries would be about a few artists and as many artworks as a gallery can hold. On the other hand, a website dedicated to artists and their works can go up to any number.

It would enable art connoisseurs anywhere in the world to take a look at the artworks of Jahangir Art Gallery by Ajay and Gayatri Deshpande by logging on to the website IndianArtCollectors. Art and technology, two starkly different subjects, now share the same platform!

So, in case you missed Atul Dodiya’s lecture and slide-show held in the city last month, log on to the official website of Chandigarh Lalit Kala Academy (CLKA) to watch the video of the lecture. Those who like to follow the Facebook route for everything can check the FB account of CLKA. “The website and FB account are the fallback options for art connoisseurs who missed the lecture,” informs Diwan Manna, chairman, CLKA.

The website mentions details of many region-based artists and pictures of recently held exhibitions are uploaded on it regularly. “At present, there are 60 artists and five artworks that are uploaded. It helps promote artists worldwide.”

Sisters Malyada Goverdhan and Ramya Rangacharya came up with the initiative ‘Hands of India’ after leaving their respective jobs of an architect and air force officer in 2005. The website of the organisation has become a medium between artists across India as well as the buyers. “Through the website we inform artists about the motifs in fashion. Instead of sticking to the age-old motifs, they then use those designs on apparels, bags, soft furnishings, pottery and clay toys,” says Malyada. The online store has helped them make the handloom industry work as a corporate firm. “We give artists regular input about the latest trends that would increase the market value of their products.” The pictures of the final products are then uploaded on the website by artists only, who are taught the procedure. The products have their price justified with details of the handwork. As Ramya adds, “Details like 70 per cent handwork and 30 per cent machine work would make the buyer understand the high cost of a product.” The organisation has in the loop artists from 13 states in India. The recently held exhibition of works of ‘Hands Of India’ at the Punjab Kala Bhawan was a huge success.

A mere glance at the statistics is enough to judge the success rate of online portal IndianArtCollectors. Within a span of six years, artworks of 700 artists, which includes names like SH Raza, MF Husain, Jatin Das, enjoy space on the portal and 7,000 is the number of collectors registered by it. City-based Anuja Lath Gupta, CEO of the portals, shares some facts, “As many as 20 artists apply for registration every week, out of which a couple are selected after their works are reviewed by our expert committee.”

The website also selects artist of the month, whose works and details are highlighted on the website. Anuja feels that the website gives Indian artists a platform to showcase their work around the world. “Since, the website has a wider reach, it enjoys a bigger clientele.”

Hips don’t lie

Her curvaceous figure is the envy of many in Hollywood but singer-actress Jennifer Lopez says she does not like working out everyday. From cheerleaders to singers, IPL offers a chance for many to showcase their talent
Jasmine Singh
Labh Janjua
right act: Labh Janjua

Now, we are not going to tell you something you don’t know or haven’t ever heard of. Cricket as we have seen, heard and known unites just about everyone. And while everyone is doing the bonding act, how can ‘our’ Punjabi singers be far off! Especially, when it is a commercial enterprise called IPL!

Here’s Punjabi singers Labh Janjua and Karan Jasbir bringing in a whole lot of entertainment as the home team Kings XI plays against Rajasthan Royals at the PCA, Mohali, on Thursday. If you ask how singing boosts up the morale of the cricketers, we can’t help you with that. But we sure can tell you what these singers have to say!

The Ji Karda, Singh is Kingg fame singer Labh Janjua is the first one to share his notes. He is excited, and can’t wait to perform in front of cricket fans? “Kings XI is our home team and it is our duty to cheer them up,” he shares. We thought the performance is for the audiences? “Well both,” he is quick to correct.

Oh! This means he is also caught in the vicious circle of entertainment. So, how does it feel performing for the cricket crowd? “It feels great, we should all do something for sports. As an entertainer this is how I can contribute,” shares Labh who has given hits like Baari Barsi (Band Baja Baraat), Dance Pe Chance (Rabb Ney Bana Di Jodi). Indeed, IPL is all about entertainment and our singers are game for it.

As for Labh, “IPL is not just entertainment. It is cricketainment, which is a good mix of little bit of fun and more of cricket. “Besides, this gives us an opportunity to perform in front of cricket fans, and also do something for sports.”

Does this hold true for games like hockey or football as well, who wants to bring in the entertainment dose here? ‘Our’ very own Punjabi singers? “I am in favour of promoting all kinds of sports, whether it is hockey or cricket. If they come up with something like this, we wouldn’t mind,” says Labh, who stars as an actor and villain in three upcoming Punjabi films. Do we need to read between the lines…if they throw in money why not!

No hard feelings for our Punjabi singers, they are the least politically correct lot! They say what they have to, as they don’t have image managers telling them what to say when. Karan Jasbir, the Dhai Lakh fame singer, a cricket fan who pursued the game in college and university days before he opted for a singing career, feels strongly about singers performing during matches. “I have performed at various events like hockey, football and kabaddi. This is the best way I can stay connected with sports, which can ‘actually’ help the youth of Punjab deal with the problem of drug addiction. Kings XI is Karan’s favourite team and IPL is giving them a chance to connect sports and entertainment. Did you forget something – moolah? Does someone want to talk about it and IPL?

chILL OUT
Abiding charm of Old Manali
Rahul Singh

Manali, named after the Hindu law-giver Manu, literally means "the abode of Manu". Situated 2 km north of the mall (read new Manali), old Manali is nothing like you would expect. Devoid of the hustle-bustle of honeymooning Indians and the restaurant-lined mall, Old Manali offers a peaceful atmosphere for that perfect promenade. Believe what I say because once we were there, the very sight of the mall made us squirm back to the snug little town.

As one entered, the enchanting forested approach hinted of what lay ahead. A little further and an array of quaint shops, cafes as well as old, traditional residences greeted us on the road into the town. Old Manali is nothing but a long narrow road winding up hill-lined with shops, cafes and guesthouses on either side. The houses of locals intermingle with visitors' accommodations. Yet the entire charm and warmth of the place is evident by the old, stilted houses and well-mannered people. During peak season, the place is swarming with foreigners from all corners of the world (majority from Israel) with some staying there for decades. Little wonder then, they are adept at the local dialect and mannerisms.

After checking into a cottage with an amazing view of the snow-capped peaks (for a meagre Rs 150 per day) we set out to explore the town. With breathtaking landscapes, the Beas meandering through the city, pine and deodar trees as far as eyes can see, Old Manali is a place that must be explored on foot. A backpacker's paradise, every path we took led us to new, interesting places tucked away in nooks and corners. The air is scented with aroma emanating from the roadside food stalls and the cozy cafes (their names betrayed their character: Lazy Dog, World Peace Café, Shiva café etc.) playing trance, soothing instrumentals and serving momos, pizzas, cakes, sandwiches, paranthas as well as all kinds of Israeli and Italian dishes. Also, there are the English and German bakeries. Well, their proprietors may not be otherwise but their cookies, breads and pies are definitely out of this world! Like-minded company is on-the-house with people doing that extra bit to accommodate you. Everyone seemed to be chilling out probably owing to a puff or two of the 'chillum'!

The little bazaar comprises tiny little shacks selling irresistible woolens, hip tees with Shiva Shakti, Boom Shankar, Marijuana leaf and Rastafari prints, chillums, sheeshas, bongs, incense sticks, purses, accessories and wall hangings, all conveying an inclination towards Indian mythology. At the bottom of the road is the Club House, selling overpriced silver pieces, woollens, incense sticks, books et al.

Old Manali also offers a plethora of other options for adventure buffs. A walk through the Deodar forest in Dhungri took us to the stunning Hadimba temple (dedicated to Bhima's wife), nestled in the midst of the green haven. A visit to the Manu temple, probably the only temple in India dedicated to Manu, is also a must (which we unfortunately skipped). Other activities include trekking through dense jungles that lead to small, quaint villages, rafting on the raging Beas and river crossing.

Who wants to let go of a cozy hug? Well that's precisely how we felt on our way back. Old Manali with its myriad colours and tenors embraces you with such warmth that it's hard to let go (that's when you start planning of settling there).

Even after our three-day excursion the Old Manali experience seemed incomplete, so much so that 40 kms en route Chandigarh, we decided to turn around and go back to the sadhus, bazigaars, trippy cafes and silent musings by the riverside, put forth on a platter by Old Manali!

Colour your space
Satish Narula

A garden devoid of colours means nothing. We have all the slogans for going 'green' but there is no harm if it is supplemented with 'hues'. After all, what is life without colours?

The range of plants that is available for indoors as well as the outdoors is amazing. Nature has done wonders and the credit goes to the explorers too who located such plants in the wild, tamed them and brought to cities.

Almost all the shade-loving plant species are valued either for the foliage, leaf texture or splashes of colour on the leaves. Imagine a group of plants with all green arrangement and another interspersed with plants with coloured foliage. It breaks the monotony. This holds good for outdoor plants too in the garden. No doubt there is a wide range of winter and summer annuals that keep a garden in colours but then there are intervening periods when there are no flowers and the garden given either all green or barren look. Use of such plants is handy at such moments.

This is the time when the caladiums are planted. They are available as rhizomes or prepared plants. The soil where these are planted, whether in pots or earth, should be friable and should not allow water stagnation.

The plants live in partial shade. You have to plant them once and thereafter they keep multiplying underground. In winter they may die but sprout again in spring once again. Begonias on the other hand are more of permanent kind and do not die in the winter.

They are winter hardy plants. Their propagation is from leaf or stem cuttings or root catching on internodes that touch ground.

(Narula is a horticulturist.)

Myth: Making a water body in your garden may lead to mosquito breeding is a myth. A fish called Gamboochia, which is an inch long and multiplies fast on its own, should be used. It thrives on mosquito larvae so stops them from breeding in your pond. Put a few of them in the water body and forget about the problem.

Rolls Royce, Porsche and Varun Bahl are the names thrown at us in what promises to be a first-of-its-kind exhibition in India. Chandigarh hosts plenty of exhibitions, but this one, we are told, is different.

"Magique for Arte is for the style conscious, super rich who do not mind a bit of splurging," says Upasna Chugh, CEO, 1 Management Entertainment Pvt Ltd.

This exhibition brings some 15 odd participants - Jewels Emporium, Jaipur that caters to royalty, Rolls Royce for automobiles, The ESTD for private aviation, yachts and boats, porcelain from Dyramics, luxury mobiles and phones from Porsche Design and Varun Bahl Haute Couture.

"It's only the best from each field that we have chosen. The idea is to give a feel of what makes these state-of-the-art, sales is not the focus," says Upasna.

"Chandigarh is a very lucrative market that's why this is the first city to showcase Magique for Arte. We will take this to Ludhiana and Delhi later," she adds.

Wear your attitude

Fashion is all about setting trends and those who follow the trends judiciously are the ones that cultivate their own distinctive style, which makes somebody to emulate them and some just feel plain envious. Seeing is eating

A new study has indicated that consumers will choose and eat more indulgent food after they see someone who is overweight-unless they consciously think about their health goals. "Why do people often think back on a pleasant evening with friends and realise that they ate more and worse food than they wish they had?" asked authors Margaret C. Campbell (Leeds School of Business) and Gina S. Mohr (University of Colorado, Boulder).

If any of those friends carry a few extra pounds, just being in their presence could trigger what the authors call a "negative stereotype." The research suggested that merely seeing someone who is strongly associated with an undesirable behaviour leads to surprising increases in the behaviour.

"Seeing someone overweight leads to a temporary decrease in a person's own felt commitment to his or her health goal," said the authors.

In one study, researchers asked people who were walking through a lobby if they would take a quick survey. The surveys had photos of an overweight person, a person of normal weight, or a lamp. After completing the survey, the researchers asked respondents to help themselves from a bowl of candy as a thank you. "People who completed the survey that included a picture of someone who was overweight took more candies on an average,” added the authors. — ANI

Eye to eye

An Australian study, led by an Indian-origin scientist, has found that six-year-olds who spent the most time watching television, using a computer or playing video games had narrower arteries in the back of their eyes - a marker of future cardiovascular risk. The first-of-its-kind study showed that more sedentary behavior such as "screen time" was associated with an average narrowing of 2.3 microns in the retinal arteriolar caliber. A micron is one thousandth of a millimeter or one-25th of a thousandth of an inch.

In the study, six- to seven-year-olds who regularly participated in outdoor physical activity had 2.2 microns wider average retinal arteriolar compared to those children with the lowest level of activity.

The magnitude of the narrowing associated with each hour of television/computer viewing was similar to that associated with 10 millimeters of mercury (mm HG) increase in systolic blood pressure in children, researchers said.

"We found that children with a high level of physical activity had a more beneficial microvascular profile compared to those with the lowest levels of physical activity," said Bamini Gopinath, lead author and senior research fellow at the Center for Vision Research at the University of Sydney.

"This suggests that unhealthy lifestyle factors may influence microcirculation early in life and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and hypertension later in life," she said.

The study included 1,492 children in 34 primary schools in Sydney, Australia. Parents answered a 193-item questionnaire, providing the number of hours spent each week in indoor and outdoor physical activity and sedentary activity such as watching television, videogames, computer time and reading.

On average, the children spent 1.9 hours per day in screen time and 36 minutes a day in total physical activity. Children in the highest levels of physical activity at just over an hour or more had significantly wider average retinal arteriolar caliber than those spending just under half an hour or less per day.

Increased screen time was associated with narrower average retinal arteriolar diameter after adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, iris color, length of the eyeball, BMI, birth weight and blood pressure. Each hour per day of TV viewing time was associated on average with 1.53 microns narrower retinal arteriolar caliber.

"Excessive screen time leads to less physical activity, unhealthy dietary habits and weight gain," she said.

"Replacing one hour a day of screen time with physical activity could be effective in buffering the effects of sedentariness on the retinal microvasculature in children. Free play should be promoted and schools should have a mandatory two hours a week in physical activity for children," she added.

The study has been published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Rivalry or revelry?

Sonam Kapoor
No Match: Sonam Kapoor

Catfights and rivalries are dime a dozen in Bollywood but actress Sonam Kapoor who is often pitted against contemporaries like Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha, says that the "war" is just a media creation.

According to the 25-year-old all the leading ladies of Bollywood can find their own place under the sun.

"We all have been here for some time now and are trying to do our best. Why create a sense of war among us? I don't see any kind of rivalry here and there is no point in comparing one with other," Sonam said.

The actress, daughter of actor Anil Kapoor, had debuted along with Deepika Padukone on the same day when her Saawariya clashed with Om Shanti Om.

And in recent times, Anushka Sharma and Sonakshi Sinha have also entered the fray.

"The good part is that all of us are very different from each other. If you look at Deepika or Anushka, we are all poles apart. As for Sonakshi, I can't even think of getting competitive with her. She is a very good friend of my sister and has practically grown up with me," said Sonam.

Though Sonam's debut film bombed at the box office, she tasted success later with I Hate Luv Storys and followed it up with the chick-flick Aisha and the recent multi-starrer Thank You.

Another benefit of working in this film was a protective senior co-actor in the form of Akshay Kumar.

"He was always super nice to me. Those who have worked with him tell me that he restricts himself to professional conversations but with me he was very sweet and kind. I immediately felt comfortable with him," said the actress.

"He was very protective about me. He also warned me for shooting off my mouth. Though I feel that I know the world, he used to tell me that it was far from being true as I was still growing up," added Sonam.

Kapoor has a packed schedule for this year, what with Mausam starring Shahid Kapoor opposite her coming up and Players, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu too expected to hit the screens this year.

"This is turning out to be an interesting year for me.

I want to have a lot of fun and do films that I really want to," said the actress.
