Major breach in Fatehabad
Fatehabad, March 21 Chhotu Ram, a farmer, claimed that standing crops in over 400 acres had been almost totally destroyed. He said though the water had receded, the crops remained covered with sludge. Chhotu Ram said the breach had occurred due to poor maintenance by the irrigation authorities. He demanded demanded urgent dewatering of fields and compensation to the affected farmers. The irrigation authorities are working round the clock to plug the 250 ft-wide breach, which is proving to be a Herculean task. “We have deployed six JCB machines, 25-30 tractor-trailers and a large number of labourers to plug the leak. We hope to block the leakage by tomorrow evening,” said Satish Ginawa, XEN, Irrigation, Fatehabad. Ginawa said his department had acted swiftly, stopping any further supply of water from the Kajalheri head. “There were 600 cusecs of water in the Kishangarh sub-branch, which is otherwise closed during this period. The department has diverted 50 cusecs of additional water to the Sidhmukh branch and 181 cusecs to the Kheri distributory from the Bighar head to slow down the water flow in the Fatehabad branch,” Ginawa said. He said the authorities suspected mischief behind the breach and had lodged a complaint with the police. The XEN maintained that the left embankment of the branch was very strong and a breach could not have occurred without mischief. |
SC orders stay on HUDA scheme
New Delhi, March 21 A Bench comprising Justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly issued notices to HUDA and the Deputy Commissioner and tehsildar of Rohtak on a contempt petition filed by Haryana Roadways Cooperative House Building Society Limited, Rohtak, through its counsel Rishi Malhotra. The society contended that HUDA had advertised the scheme in newspapers in utter disregard of the status quo order passed by the Supreme Court on May 24, 2010. According to the society, HUDA had in April 1998 purchased land measuring 16 kanals in Pada village in Rohtak district and used it for allotting plots to its 168 members. The mutation was done on June 5, 1999. However, the Rohtak administration acquired this land on December 30, 2002 for developing a commercial area in Sector 6, ignoring the objections filed by the society and its members. Subsequently, the state administration returned 600 of the 800 acres of the acquired land belonging to influential persons, but rejected the pleas of the society and its members. In its May 24, 2010 order passed on an earlier petition filed by the society, the SC had directed status quo, clarifying that “this would necessarily mean that the petitioners and the respondents shall not alienate the land/property to any other person.” HUDA contended that the scheme did not cover the land acquired by the society. Nevertheless, the society maintained that the status quo order was meant for the entire chunk of land acquired by HUDA in Rohtak. The society stated in the contempt petition that HUDA had “deliberately and with mala fide intent misconstrued and misinterpreted the orders” of the apex court to “over-reach the categorical directions of status quo.” |
Jats refuse to budge
Hisar, March 21 The meeting criticised the Centre and the Haryana Government for failing to accept their demand and “resorting to delaying tactics”. Earlier, the authorities met the Jat leaders at Ramayan. The administration has summoned RAF companies to deal with any eventuality. Personnel of the RAF staged a flag march in the town last night. Chief Minister BS Hooda today appealed to the Jats yet again to end their stir as the “Centre is already considering my letter on the issue.” The decision was taken at a meeting of the representatives of Dahiya, Malik, Joon and Saroha khaps under the banner of the All-India Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti. The district president of the samiti, Mahender Singh Mor, said the dharna would continue till their demand for OBC status to the Jats was not accepted. The next line of action would be decided at a meeting in Sonepat on March 27. Meanwhile, the district police has taken all precautionary measures, including requisition of the paramilitary forces and patrolling of the sensitive areas to tackle any law and order situation. |
Conserve water, Hooda to farmers
Hisar, March 21 Hooda said the future of the planet depended on availability of water, but water was becoming an increasingly scarce natural resource the world over. The world was waking up to the problem and it was time the Indian farming community and farm scientists followed suit before it was too late. He said drip irrigation was one solution to conserve water and more new technologies suited to different regions needed to be evolved expeditiously. The Chief Minister said a second Green Revolution was also required for India to be able to feed its teeming billions. Organic farming without the use of insecticides and pesticides should be encouraged. He said to make farmers prosperous, the MRP of crops needed to be calculated by adding 50 per cent profit margin to their actual cost. Hooda called upon farmers not to remain stuck on two crops in a year. Diversification according to location of holdings must be done to boost incomes. Agriculture in India had still lots of potential provided farmers were trained to do so by farm scientists. The Chief Minister inspected the university’s research farm. He complimented the scientists for developing many new promising varieties. He visited the stalls put up by various companies and gave away prizes to farmers. He also tried his hands at a tractor much to the amusement of visiting farmers and farm scientists. He said farming was his first love since childhood. |
