New Punjabi cut
Our lensman came back with pictures from the shoot of Punjabi movie Yaara Dildaara. As a practice, we wouldn't have doubted him (officially doubt), but the pictures of the actress made us stop, stare and wonder…"Are you sure, these are the pictures of the lady acting in Punjabi cinema," we asked him hesitatingly. "She looks glamourous. We mean she isn't wearing salwar kameez and is she acting in a Punjabi movie!" Okay people, here it comes-costume styling is no longer gibberish for Punjabi cinema, to be left to the discretion of the spot boy who would fetch all colours and designs of salwar suits from any nearby emporium. We are talking about a 'fashion twist' in Punjabi cinema. We are talking about women don sexy dresses, sporting new hair do's looking glam in latest accessories. Make way for style divas in this industry who are redefining the stereotypical Punjaban of Punjabi cinema! 'Punjaban look no more'
I pretty much wore whatever was given to me to when I entered the industry. After 'Prince' though, I became conscious of my on screen styling and with Mel Kara De Rabba, I have pretty much given a new look to the otherwise 'Punjaban' of our cinema. In Jiney Mera Dil Lutiya, I am wearing skinny jeans and dresses with a lot of accessories. Sabrina Bajwa, who closely studies what's new on the ramp, is doing my styling. Instead of usual buns I have sported new hairstyles, fringes, cuts, loose curls. Who says a Punjabi kudi cannot look glamourous on screen? Neeru
Bajwa, actress in Mel Kara de Rabba 'Time to experiment'
Essentially, if a designer has a particular look in mind then we used to go by it, but now things are changing. Actors decide what they need to wear and how to go about it. I have tried to create a blend of Indo-Western style in my movies, whether it is teaming pencil pants with short top and a sequenced stool or cocktail dresses with neat cuts. For my upcoming movie, I am wearing Anarkali suits; the designs are those that are being followed on the ramp these days. Jonita
Doda, actress in Chak Jawaana. Don’t go overboard
We have come a long way in terms of styling in Punjabi film industry. Like the scripts of the movies, fashion too has gone in for a change. Actors go in for designer clothes, stylish hair do’s. Movie makers hire fashion designers in sync with the latest designs. At the same time, we have to careful about not hurting the sensibilities of the Punjabi audiences. Kulraj
Randhawa, actor,Yamla Pagla Deewana 'Punjabis are born stylish'
Gone are the days when we could wear anything. Punjabi cinema is going the Bollywood way, so is everything else, including the styling. The youth of Punjab is well travelled, and knows what fashion is all about. I try to keep up with the latest men's fashion in my movie. Amrinder Singh, actor in Munde UK De jasmine@tribunemail.com

Kangana’s dream
When a charismatic young lady from our neighbouring state (read Himachal Pradesh) dreams big and then realises those dreams, one feels she richly deserves her celebrity status. In Ludhiana for an inauguration, Kangana Ranaut was afforded a warm welcome by the people here. Lifestyle catches up. How would you describe your journey from the hills to Bollywood since you started six years ago? It has been a tremendous learning experience. The struggles were there, but when success followed it all became so worthwhile. I realised this after the award I got for Fashion. Maybe my 'happy-go-lucky-attitude' has helped me sail through. You have essayed bold roles in Gangster, 'Fashion' and the recent 'Tanu weds Manu'. Was it a coincidence or an option? Neither. For me the director is the boss. I am an actor and can do all roles, but I sure have enjoyed these roles. What would you say is the toughest part of being in Bollywood? Work is pleasure, but sometimes too much competition creates stress, which I particularly find difficult to handle. Another thing I feel is that star kids like Abhishek, Ranvir or Sonakshi do have a quicker and comfortable route to success, but that is the case everywhere I suppose. How do you feel being in Ludhiana? Being from North India, I always feel very comfortable here. Punjabi culture is a part and parcel of the movie world, and Ludhiana is making news these days. I also simply adore Punjabi weddings. What is your dream role? What movies are you looking forward to? I would love to enact a role similar to Madhubala's in Anarkali. I would also like to work with Aamir Khan and director Raj Kumar Santoshi. I hope you will like me in my forthcoming movies Double Dhamaal and Guest. |
