Row over destroying used needles; patients bear brunt

A row over destruction of used needles seems to have snowballed into a major controversy, with over 80 operation theatre (OT) technicians proceeding on a sudden strike last night, leaving hundreds of anxious patients at the PGI a harassed and worried lot.

The oldest student organisation at Panjab University, Panjab University Students Union (PUSU), which is 34 years old, officially split today, with the ouster of one former president and a warning to the outgoing president.

Suicide bid by mentally challenged youth
Chandigarh, March 15
A 20-year-old student of the Regional Institute for Mentally Handicapped tried to kill himself by jumping from the fourth floor of the institute building at Sector 31 here today. The victim was identified as Subhash Kumar, a resident of Maloya. He jumped from the top floor of the building in the afternoon.

Holding United Indian Insurance Company liable for deficiency in service, the UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (II) has directed it to pay the entire claim of Rs 4.5 lakh for theft of a vehicle to a Faridabad resident, besides a compensation of Rs 50,000 and Rs 7,000 towards the cost of litigation.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has clarified the State Information Commission was at liberty to entertain and decide RTI appeals against the SGPC. Justice Surya Kant, through an interim order of March, 2010, had stayed an earlier order passed by the State Chief Information Commissioner.

Colony No. 5 youth kidnapped

Mahinder Kumar, a 24-year-old youth of Colony No. 5, was allegedly kidnapped here last night. In a complaint to the police, victim’s mother Rajpati Devi said Mahinder had left the house around 9 pm but failed to return home later in the evening.

Panjab University bagged the runners-up trophy during the All-India Inter-University Rowing Championship held in Kolkata from March 9 to 13. The 11-member contingent emerged winners in two categories of the competition, but failed to qualify for the final stage in two other events.

Anjum pockets 9 medals

Anjum Modgil, a student of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, has bagged nine medals in the recently-held national shooting championship at Delhi. After a brilliant performance in the nationals, Anjum managed to win two gold medals, three silver medals and four bronze medals.
