NCP suspends MLA accused of rape
Mumbai, February 26 NCP spokesman Madan Bafna said Wagh has been suspended following the allegations. "We would like the government to conduct a thorough inquiry into the case," Bafna said. Wagh was accused of raping the 22-year-old woman at the government guest house at Nashik after being called to meet him in connection with a job on November 21 last year. In her complaint, the woman alleged that Wagh and his personal assistant Rajendra Mali raped her at the guest house. After the incident, the duo allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she spoke to anyone about her ordeal, the woman said in her police complaint. The Nashik police posted a lookout notice for the MLA recently after he went underground. Wagh, who remains untraceable, called up local newspapers to say he was being framed by his political opponents. Wagh has claimed that the allegations were part of a "political conspiracy" hatched by his rivals. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar said, “The party has taken a serious view of the rape charges and suspended Wagh, MLA from Pachora constituency, who has alleged a conspiracy against him. If he is proved not guilty, action taken would be withdrawn.” Maharashtra Home Minister and senior NCP leader RR Patil said: “All are equal before the law and police would conduct the probe impartially.” Reacting to the development, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said, “He (Wagh) should surrender and face the probe. The party would decide on the issue if he is found guilty.” (With inputs from PTI) |
No relief for K’taka CM in land case
Bangalore, February 26 The additional city civil and session court judge CB Hippargi also rejected Sohan Kumar's separate application for including former Chief Minister and JD-S chief H D Kumaraswamy as an accused in the case filed on private complaints by two advocates. Rejecting the two applications, Hippargi posted the matter to February 28 for recording of evidence. In his application, Kumar had sought a stay on the proceedings on the ground that the matter was already being investigated by the Lokayukta and a judicial commission set up by the state government. Having obtained Governor H R Bhardwaj’s sanction for prosecution of the Chief Minister, Sirajin Basha had filed five private complaints against Yeddyurappa, his sons B Y Vijayendra and B Y Raghavendra, MP, and Sohan Kumar and others accusing them of bungling in land de-notification and allotments. Counsel for the complainants objected to Kumar's applications contending that he had no locus standi to seek such a relief at the "pre-processing stage and pre-cognisance of the matter". |

PAC slams MoD over submarine purchase
New Delhi, February 26 This is in context of Scorpene submarines that are now being co-produced with French company DCNS at Mazagon docks in Mumbai. The PAC, in an earlier report, had observed that the delay led to escalation in the price of submarines by more than Rs 2,800 crore and an additional Euro 27 million commitment on procurement of missiles due to delay in the finalisation of the contract for three years from 2002 to 2005. The ministry had not quantified the loss. The PAC, headed by Murli Manohar Joshi, tabled its report in the Parliament a couple of days ago, reiterated the need for quantification of financial losses accrued due to delayed procurement of equipment (for the submarines). It asked the ministry to indicate exact losses, the action it has taken to recover the same and also fix responsibility to check recurrence of such incidents. The committee said it did not agree with the contention of the ministry that “highly complex nature of the procurement” had delayed the project. |
Villagers up in arms
Hyderabad, February 26 Several parts of the coastal district observed bandh today to protest against the high-handed behaviour of the police in evicting agitators from the plant site near Vadditandra village yesterday. People from 36 villages in the region, mostly fishermen, are opposing the 2,640 MW thermal plant being set up by East Coast Energy Private Limited (ECEPL) in 3,300 acres allotted by the government. The local fishermen, opposition parties and environment groups have been on an agitation mode for several months now, demanding cancellation of the project on the ground that it would spell disaster for the local environment and displace thousands of families of fishermen. A determined group of agitators clashed with the police in their attempt to prevent commencement of power plant works. The police resorted to baton-charge, lobbed teargas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse the mob, causing injuries to scores of fishermen and farmers. The opponents of the plant contend that the project developer has violated environmental laws and was bent upon vandalising the precious ecosystem. |
