Spurned youth sets three scooters afire
Cops come 1.30 hours after emergency call
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 16
Hours after the confidence-instilling exercise by the top brass of the Chandigarh Police, including the IGP and the SSP, by visiting houses of residents across the city, the UT police showed gaping holes in ground realities when cops arrived an hour and-a-half after an emergency call made by a resident of Sector 22 in the wee hours this morning.

A hooligan sprayed the contents of his liquor bottle on three scooters outside a house at Sector 22-B and put his burning cigarette stub on it. The scooters caught fire and exploded. Parul, an inhabitant of the house, said the police and fire station were called immediately. Fire tenders came only an hour later, around 3 am, while the police followed around 3.45 am.

Parul said, “It was around 2 am when the boy, who had been pursuing my sister, came and parked his car (a Swift Desire) outside our home. He was playing Punjabi love songs loudly. We were up as my sister was preparing for the entrance examination of MBBS course. We know the boy. He is an old neighbour, whose family has now shifted to another house in the same sector.”

“My sister had only recently told me that the boy was troubling her for the past few months. They were classmates in a previous school. He was constantly troubling her. When my sister did not respond to his calls yesterday, he started shouting abuses. My sister even went to the extent of saying that she would talk in the morning in case he went at that time. He did not relent. After an exchange of words, he threw liquor on the scooter and then his cigarette stub. He then went away,” she said.

“The Kinetic scooters exploded. We are a joint family. We took our nephew, young kids and ladies through an alternative route outside. We were shocked to see that the fire tender came about an hour later and the police even later, around 3.45 am. We have filed our complaint. The police registered a case. That serves us no good as the walls of our house are black,” she said.

The elder sister said, “The boy even gave calls from his mobile from inside the police lock-up. My sister is participating in the Miss Chandigarh contest and he said he would not allow that.”
