Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 11
Terming the selection of women hockey players for the coaching camp of Punjab hockey team, starting from January 13, as a big launch pad, the women hockey players said the first Senior National Women Hockey Championship will be a “do or die” situation for them. The women hockey players had gathered for the selection trials at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here today.

The women hockey players will undergo coaching at the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala. The final selection for the Punjab women hockey team would be held on January 18.

The first Senior National Women Hockey Championship is scheduled to be held at Sonepat from January 21 to 30.

As many as 26 women hockey players were selected by a seven-member selection committee, comprising Olympian Varinder Singh, Rajbir Kaur, Iqbal Singh Sandhu, Saroj Bala, Harjit Kaur, Balbir Singh Randhawa and Baljeet Kaur.

The women hockey players said the first Senior National Women Hockey Championship would further pave way for their selection in the Hockey India Camp.

Asian Champions Trophy player goalkeeper Yogita Bali, who was selected in the trials for the coaching camp said, “It is a golden chance for the women hockey players and we will have to perform the best to grab place in the India Camp. It will be a do or die situation and we would ensure that the Punjab team wins the championship, promising better prospects ahead.”

Another player from the selected team, Kirandeep Kaur from RCF, Kapurthala, said, “Punjab has always remained a hub of hockey in India and it is time for us to bring back the glory of the state at the national-level. There was a time when maximum players in the national team were from Punjab, but that trend received a set back in the past. If the team ends up in the top slot of the tournament, it will be good beginning for the women hockey in the state,” she added.

Rajbir Kaur, one of the selectors from the seven-member selection committee, highlighted that the selection of the players had been done keeping in mind the mix of the experienced and the budding players.

“During the coaching camp at the RCF, Kapurthala, emphasis would be laid on selecting the players with better track record and good physical endurance. We are sure that the final selected players of the team would be the best to compete in the championship,” she said.

The women hockey players also maintained that the championship promised good openings for the budding hockey players, as they would get a chance to get recruitment in the reputed academies. “One of the major problem with hockey, despite being a national game, is that it lacks good sponsors and money.

It is very important for us to showcase good hockey skills so that we are selected in the Punjab women hockey team and further get a chance to get good jobs too,” said a budding player.

While Harjeet Kaur, who is also the coach of the Women hockey team at the RCF, Kapurthala, said the players who appeared for the selection trials were from colleges, Asian and Commonwealth Games teams.

“The selection would be done keeping in mind the talent required for the national games. The coaching camp would be the real testing time for the players during which we would select the best players for the senior national women hockey championship,” she said.

Travel agencies asked to pay up
Deepkamal Kaur
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 11
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has asked Kuoni Travels, Mumbai, SOTC, Jalandhar, and Pinochhio Travels, Amritsar, to refund Rs 21,000 to an Amritsar-based couple for not being able to provide them the required visa for Europe travel.

In their complaint, Pushpinder Singh Grover and Kuldeep Grover said they had got their seats booked with Pinochhio Travels for an 11-day Europe tour starting from July 2, 2009, organised by Kuoni Travels. They said they were told that it was compulsory for them to get processed their multi-entry Schengen visa through SOTC even as they had UK visa.

As advised, the Grover couple gave their passport and visa papers to them for getting Schengen visa processed. They said they were assured by Kuoni Travels and SOTC that all arrangements for their tour would be made without much difficulty before the date of their tour.

However, before the start of their tour they were shocked to know that their visa could not be procured and the tour booked by them had been cancelled. They said the officials even failed to refund the booking amount of Rs 42,000 paid to them. Further, they complained that the officials returned their passports only with the condition that they should give in writing that they were prepared to appear for interview before any Embassy and even got signed some blank documents.

In their reply, Kuoni Travels agreed that they had received an initial non-refundable interest-free booking deposit of Rs 42,000 for the couple. They further replied that the complainants had themselves decided to cancel their tour and did not appear for personal interview before the Italian Consulate on June 29, 2009, due to a family problem. They denied having withheld their passports and pressurising them to sign the blank letters.

Kuldeep Grover, on the contrary, said they were not aware of any interview held at the Italian Consulate on June 26, 2009.

The forum, presided over by A.K. Sharma and Darshan Singh, found that the booking terms and conditions were ambiguous and too vague to make out any comprehensible meaning. They even said travel companies could not wriggle out of their liability even assuming that complainants signed documents about non-appearance before the embassy. The forum also got proofs that the complainants travelled to the UK on their UK visa from July 11 to July 22.

It accepted the plea of the complainants and directed all three companies to jointly pay up Rs 21,000 along with cost of litigation to the tune of Rs 1,000.

IMA criticises forming of regulatory Act to monitor pvt medical centres
Amaninder Pal
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 11
Reacting to reports of recommendations made to enact a regulatory act to monitor the functioning of private medical establishments, the state body of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) today criticised the formulation of any such act and termed it as a move to provide undue room for the expansion of big corporate hospitals in the state.

The reaction came after reports of the recommendations made by the Punjab Governing Reforms Committee (PGRC), to enact the Private Health Regulation Bill Act, appeared in the newspapers.

“It is unlikely that the act’s provisions regarding building, manpower and equipments might be fulfilled with the current treatment costs. Small hospitals will either close down or there would manifold increase in treatment costs,” said state IMA President, Dr Rakesh Vig.

“This appears to be a step taken under the influence of various corporate sector groups functional in the healthcare sector. The private hospitals and clinics have already been regulated by 45 various laws and regulations. Moreover, doctors and paramedical staff working there is accountable to courts, respective district health authorities, Punjab Medical Council and Medical Council of India. There is no rationale to frame any such act,” he added.

Besides other objectives, the act reportedly envisages bringing uniformity in treatment costs and bringing such hospitals under the ambit of registration bodies, to be headed by the respective Deputy Commissioners.

The IMA had also strongly opposed the Clinical Establishment Bill, 2010, which, by and large, had made similar recommendations.

“How can there be uniformity in treatment costs, when the quality of services in each hospital varies? A similar regulation was implemented in Jammu and Kashmir a few years ago, which, instead of improving the healthcare scenario, led to the closure of over 60 per cent small clinics and hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir,” opined Dr GS Gill, Chairman, Punjab Nursing Home Cell, Dr Yash Sharma, former IMA president, Dr SPS Sooch, State Secretary, Dr SPS Grover, State Vice-President and Dr Yogeshwar Sood.

Railways fail to get encroached properties vacated
Deepkamal Kaur
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 11
While the railway authorities have been ruing dip in income and spurt in costs in the past few years, they seem to have done little to recover their encroached properties spread over hundreds of hectares of land.

As many as 173 properties belonging to the Ferozepur division of the Railways have been encroached upon. But the Estate Officers of the division have perhaps not tried to recover these properties for there is not a single case regarding this pending in any court. The only property which the officials have managed to get evicted in the past five years is a 9.4 hectare land.

The revelation came into official record in replies furnished by the CPIO of the division to queries put forth through RTI application filed by advocate Rajinder Bhatia.

The fact that this encroached land, if recovered, can become a big source of income is proven from the fact that the railway division received a rent of Rs 56.75 crore from 165.68 hectares of land. This recovery is just for seven-month period starting from April, 2010, to October, 2010.

The rent has gone significantly up in the past five years. The collection was Rs 12.1 crore in 2005-06, Rs 12.87 crore in 2006-07, Rs 17.42 crore in 2007-08 and Rs 26.03 crore in 2008-09.

In fact, a total of 10,480.18 hectares of land is owned by the Railways, through which it has been making income by licensing of land for growing food, sale of fruit trees, sale of dry and mature trees, sale of fishing rights, etc.
