Hosiery goods transporter killed
Robbery ruled out; cops yet to determine motive
Ludhiana, January 10
Unidentified assailants killed a 54-year-old hosiery goods transporter in cold blood in the latter's godown located near a gurudwara on Sekhewal Road in the city’s Shivpuri locality late Sunday night. The motive in the crime has yet to be determined.

LPG shortage leads to theft at godown

Owing to acute shortage of LPG cylinders in the city, it seems to be a much sought after commodity even by thieves. In yet another such incident, 43 cooking gas cylinders were stolen from a godown near the Dhandra road here today.

Thieves decamped with gold jewellery worth nearly Rs 9 lakh from a house in Punjab Mata Nagar late last night. The incident came to light when the owner of the house returned from Amritsar after attending a function there.

School winter break extended
Ludhiana, January 10
With no respite in sight from the harsh weather conditions prevailing in the region, the state government has extended the winter vacation of primary classes of all schools till January 16. The primary sections of all schools, private as well as government, will now reopen on January 17.

VAT on many items hiked; pulses to be cheaper

With the change in rates of value added tax (VAT), cellphones, power inverters, spectacles, UPS systems, LCD and LED TVs and plastic goods will cost dearer. On the other hand, VAT on Punjabi ‘juttis’ (shoes), rice and bran and deoiled rice bran has been abolished. VAT on pulses and unbranded ‘besan’ (chickpea flour) has been lowered to 1 percent from 4 percent earlier.

On the second day of his tour undertaken to disburse development grants to various villages and towns in Payal constituency, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today arrived at Dr Ishwar Singh Memorial Hall of Guru Nanak National College and distributed cheques worth Rs 81 lakh among 13 panchayats of the surrounding villages, apart from taking up the problems of the beneficiaries.

Roads on VIP route repaired

As expected, the local authorities ensured that the convy of the Chief Minister, who was on a visit to the town today, did not have to face a bumpy ride. For, no road, be it the national highway or a link road, that was part of the VIP’s route was left untouched or unrepaired.

Sun brings relief, but chill continues

With fog enveloping the city and chilly winds blowing since early in the morning, most residents preferred to keep themselves warm inside their houses, shops and offices. However, after the sun emerged from the clouds in the afternoon they came out for a while. Sitting in the mild sunshine for about half an hour provided the much needed relief from the severe cold.
