No fee hike on PU campus this year
Announcement made during UGC team’s visit to varsity
Chandigarh, January 10
In a crucial announcement made during the visit of a seven-member team of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to Panjab University today, Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti said there would not be any fee hike for students this year, not even the annual 10 per cent hike that has been ritualistically followed in the past.

Make plan for periphery’s development, Centre to UT
Chandigarh, January 10
The Central Government today directed the Chandigarh Administration and the Punjab and Haryana governments to chalk out a comprehensive plan for the integrated development of Chandigarh’s periphery. The directions came at a high-level meeting of senior officials of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh under the chairmanship of RC Mishra, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Urban Development, at New Delhi today.

The much-awaited notification to upgrade the Mohali Municipal Council into a Municipal Corporation has finally been issued by the local government. After being cleared by the Legal Cell of the Local Government Department, the notification has been sent to the press for publication.

Police preparing sketches of suspects

With police investigations into the gruesome murder of five-year old Khushpreet heading nowhere, the police is now preparing sketches of the suspects. According to sources, the police is making the sketches on the basis of description provided to them by the STD booth owners from where the ransom calls were made.

Government schools in Chandigarh and Panchkula will remain closed till January 16. However, the schools in Chandigarh will now function on second Saturdays after these holidays to enable the teachers to complete the requisite number of working days, sources said.

AICTE norms changed
Chandigarh, January 10
The latest AICTE norms for business schools, other than the IIMs and those affiliated to universities, have become a cause of resentment. According to the new norms, admission process and fees fixation for the PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) programme shall be conducted by the respective state governments.

PGI head draftsman gets 2 yrs for graft

A CBI court today sentenced the head draftsman at the PGI to two years rigorous imprisonment in a case of corruption. Santosh Kataria was convicted under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 12,500 on him.

Cyclist run over by canter

A 45-year-old cyclist was killed by a speeding canter opposite the petrol pump on the Ambala-Chandigarh highway here this morning. The deceased has been identified as Ram Kumar, a resident of Pabhat village.

Two held for snatching incident
Chandigarh, January 10
The UT police today arrested two persons who had allegedly snatched cash from a Dhanas resident yesterday. The accused have been identified as Harjit Singh and Harish Sharma, both residents of Barh Majra, district SAS Nagar.

Woman hit by car, dies
Chandigarh, January 10
A 62-year-old woman was killed after she was hit by a rashly driven car in Sector 37 here today. The victim, Daya Rani, a resident of Sector 25, died after her cycle was hit by the car.

2 houses burgled in city
Chandigarh, January 10
Thieves struck at two houses and decamped with cash and valuables worth lakhs in the city. In the first incident, thieves targeted a house in Sector 48. According to the police, the owner, Sanjay Aggarwal, had gone to Rajasthan along with his family on December 22.

2 booked for tampering with revenue records
Mohali, January 10
Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Nayagoan, complained to the police that Karan Singh and Rajinder Kumar, residents of Gobind Nagar, Nayagaon, tampered with the revenue record of Khasra No. 253 and 194 with the connivance of revenue officers tried to grab the land of the complainant.

Man held for firing in air
Chandigarh, January 10
The UT Police arrested a Sector 34 resident for firing five gunshots in the air today. No one was, however, injured in the incident. According to the police, the accused was identified as Gurcharan Singh.
