SSP denies recovery rumours
Chandigarh, January 1
On the first day of the New Year, ‘rumours’ were rife that abducted child Khushpreet had been recovered by the police. However, UT Senior Superintendent of Police Naunihal Singh vehemently denied any such development towards the evening. “We are investigating the case. But there is no recovery of the child,” he categorically stated.

Jan 1 spells joy for 45 families

It was double celebrations in many homes in the tri city, as the first day of the New Year spelt happiness for many families in the city as 45 babies were born in hospitals of the tricity after midnight.

Pending projects high on Mayor’s agenda

Mayor of the Corporation, Ravinder Pal Singh, while addressing his first press conference here today said the priority this year will be to complete all pending projects that commenced four years ago. He said within a fortnight he would hold a meeting with the MC officials to get the status of the pending projects to ensure fast execution.

Uprooted road berms bane for Sec 28 residents

Residents of Sector 28 D are harassed lot these days courtesy, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. It was more than a week ago that the Municipal Corporation through a contractor got the road berms uprooted in order to widen the road. However, the workers never returned to finish the work. As a result, the residents are finding it difficult to enter into their homes. This coupled with heavy rains that lashed the city over the past two days has added to the woes of these residents who are also not able to park their vehicles inside their premises.

One held for fraud

The police arrested a person on the charges of cheating another by selling a disputed property here today.
Manish Tehran, a resident of Sector 40, lodged a complaint with the police that Ravinder Kumar Jain, a resident of Sector 15, had taken Rs 45 lakh fraudulently from him.

Two thefts reported at Zirakpur
Zirakpur, January 1
Police inspects the spot where theft took place at a house in Vasant Vihar, Phase II, Zirakpur, on Saturday On day one of the New Year, two thefts were reported here today. Thieves decamped with jewellery and cash after breaking into two houses in Vasant Vihar, Phase II, Dhakoli.
Jaswinder Kaur, a resident of house number 157, said she went to her parental house in Naraingarh on Wednesday, along with her children. She got information about the theft from her neighbour this morning. When she returned, she found the house ransacked.

Youth electrocuted
Mohali, January 1
An 18-year-old safai karamchari was electrocuted when he came in contact with a high tension line in the industrial area, Phase IX, here this morning. The victim, who was engaged by a private contractor to sweep the road, climbed up a tree to chop a branch. Accidentally his head touched a live wire and he was electrocuted. He is survived by four sisters.

Atul Trehan was declared Mr Chandigarh in the bodybuilding championship organised by the Chandigarh Bodybuilding Association, Mohali, which concluded here today.
The CBBA official said winners of below 55 kg, 60 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg, 85 kg and 90 kg have been selected to participate in the forthcoming Mr North India competition to be held at Palwal in Haryana.

SGGS College win baseball tourney
Panchkula, January 1
SGGS College, Sector 26, has won the Punjab University Inter-College Baseball Tournament by beating PU campus 6-0.
In the final match, Sourav and Vaneet scored two points each while Bhupinder and Amit scored one point each for their SGGS College team.
