Goods worth lakhs gutted in textile mill fire

Fire fighters faced a tough time dousing a fire that broke out today morning at NS Textile Mill situated on Tajpur Road. Machinery and stocks of clothes worth several lakhs of rupees were reportedly destroyed in the blaze. After receiving information the municipal corporation’s fire fighting staff immediately arrived at the scene, followed by senior deputy mayor.

Konika Kumari today made the city proud by winning a gold medal in the hammer throw event during the Junior National Athletics Championship held at Bangalore. Konika, a resident of Delhi, has been practicing for the past one year at the Guru Nanak Sports Complex here. Her coach Nirmal Singh Grewal, a local resident, is an international hammer thrower.

LIT flouts rule, lays road at night

The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) has allegedly wasted public money by constructing roads at night to benefit a few blue- eyed contractors. Ludhiana Improvement Trust officials laid one such road at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar late in the evening despite opposition from those residing in the area.

Vehicles were seen being driven carefully, with the headlights turned on, on national highways. Several trains, including Delhi bound Shatabdi Express, Super fast Express, Dadar Express, Barauni Express, Sachkhand Express, Pashchim Express, Amritsar bound Howrah Mail, Howrah Express, Frontier Mail, Tata Express, Jammu bound Jammu Mail, Jhelum Express and Himgiri Express, were running from half an hour to four hours behind the schedule due to thick fog.

The division number 4 police today arrested a 50-year-old resident of Salem Tabri with 17 cases of liquor near Chand Cinema. According to SHO Devinder Kumar of division number 4 police station, accused Baldev Raj, alias Debi, was arrested with 14 cases of the IMFL, one case of pint and two cases of nips. A Hero Honda motorcycle (PB 10 AN 2271) was also recovered from the accused.
