Bahar Kaur wins Miss U’khand title
Dehradun, December 6 Swati Negi and Manpreet Kochar were declared the first and second runner-up, respectively. The grand finale was attended by eminent personalities of the city who thoroughly enjoyed
the competition. The pageant was divided into four categories. The first round was the saree round which was followed by the western dress round. Ethnic and evening gowns also carried on the schedule. In between a dance troupe from Delhi mesmerised the audience with their performance. Talking to The Tribune after winning the title, Bahar said she had fulfilled her parents’ dream, as it was they who wanted her to win the title. “Life will change to some extent, but I will remain the same person my whole life,” she said, adding “I want to complete my studies first, as I am planning to do PhD in Mass Communication. But, I will definitely pursue a career in modelling side by side”. Swati, student of diploma in airport management, said she wanted to enter the acting field and if she did not get a chance, she would pursue a career as flight attendant. Manpreet, who is a first-year student of MCom at DAV College, said her next target was Miss India Pageant and she would continue her studies along with it. Meanwhile, the results of 14 sub-titles were also declared. While Arushi Gupta and Manpreet Dhillon shared the title for Miss Beautiful Smile, the other winners were Bahar Kaur Ratan (Miss Perfect Ten), Chetna (Miss Talented), Chitrakshi Tiwari (Miss Beautiful Simle), Deepika Bisht and Swati Negi (Miss Catwalk), Vidushi Bhatnagar (Miss Dancing Queen), Poonam Kohli (Miss Beautiful Hair), Manisha Rana (Miss Beautiful Skin), Nitisha Rana (Miss Photogenic), Shikha Rawat and Chetna (Miss Body Beautiful), Shikha Rawat (Miss Congeniality), Rahel Rupama and Tarang Chauhan (Miss Fresh Face), Tarang Chauhan (Miss Popular Choice) and Manpreet Kochar (Miss Personality). Judges for the beauty show included Anudeep Sharma, Regional Manager of the Seagrams company, Prateek Lamba, choreographer, Sakshi Aggarwal, firsht runner-up of Miss Uttarakhand-2008, Radhika Agarwal, Michelle Nair (academician), Geetika Bisht (member, DCMTE) and Mayank Shekhar (fashion designer). |

suddenly it became a moment of embarrassment for a contestant as half of her top
fell though she managed to pull it up immediately. She was wearing a beautiful off-shoulder red dress. She came forward very confidently, but when she turned to go back, her dress malfunctioned. Somehow she was able to hold it and went back and got the dress tightened using a safety pin. Backstage she was seen crying, while her mother and acquaintances comforted her as she refused to go back on the stage. “It may happen sometime by fault, but it depends how the person carries it. Moreover,
you are not facing the audience at that time,” she was heard telling her daughter. Although she was put at ease, till the end of the show the smile was missing from her face. |
Jumbos attack check post, forest guards run for life
Haridwar, December 6 Not a day passes when elphants in residential areas in the vicinity of these forest terrains are not visible or creating a ruckus. Jumbos actions are even life threatening as many people and even forest guards have just escaped their attacks. At Roshanabad where the District Magistrate, SSP and District Court are situated, a herd of jumbos attacked the Rawli forest check post all of a sudden. Such was the gravity of the attack that forest guards on duty had to run to save their life as elephants were in quite an aggressive mood. Not only did the elephants attack the check post, destroying its safety wall, and they also intimidated the forest employees for about 50 metre. As per nearby villagers and forest employees, the presence of the elephants was being noticed for the past few days, but suddenly late last night after creating havoc in the agricultural fields nearby, they attacked on the check post. Speaking to The Tribune, Wildlife Warden Vikram Singh Tomar informed that the active presence of elephants had increased in the area with a special alert issued to the forest employees. Also villagers were being apprised of various precautions they should take these days as, apart from crops, jumbos were also causing threat to human life. Villagers are being advised to be highly cautious and not venture out alone after sunset and quite early in the morning, as these are the hours when elephants venture out in the open. Villagers are also in fear as earlier they used to run to nearby forest guards to inform them and seek their help, but now jumbos have attacked forest guards. Affected people are carrying night vigil in groups with lighted torches and musical instruments to shoo away the elephants when they try to enter agricultural fields or human settlements. “Be it villages Missirpur, Katarpur, Jagjeetpur, Pathri, Shyampur, everywhere there is jumbo scare which is now becoming a major problem for us. Earlier, elephants used to ravage crops of sugarcane only, but now they are intimidating and getting violent when villagers try to turn them away,” said Rao Affaq Ali, village representative of Jeopata village on the Haridwar-Roorkee route.
Elephant kills Gujjar boy
In a shocking incident, an 11-year-old boy was mowed down by a ravaging elephant, while the boy was sleeping in his hut. The victim Jaffar Ali was sleeping alone when the incident happened. When other family members heard the noise, they came to help, but till then the jumbo had severely wounded the boy. Infuriated Gujjars then went after the elephant and chased him away from the Gujjar colony
at Hajara Grant falling in the Ranipur area. An instant ex-gratia payment of Rs 5,000 has been accorded to the victim’s family by Forest Department officials. |
Varsity fulfils students’ demand
Nainital, December 6 In a bid to remain at par with the major universities of the country, Kumaon University had recently decided to go for online filling of examination forms. While this decision was broadly welcomed, a section of students had launched protests across the region stating that online filling of forms remained a distant dream in colleges located in remote areas where connectivity and power was a major problem. They had stated that before taking any decision, the university must take into account the geographical conditions of the region. With a view to resolve the impasse, Vice-Chancellor Dr VPS Arora had convened a meeting on the issue today. Some students continued to agitate even as the meeting was on. Directors from various colleges, Dean, Student Welfare, examination authorities and student leaders from all over Kumaon were invited for the meeting. Arora also said such an initiative would help the students keep up with the times. He added that the students appearing for the examination would have to fill the form by themselves and this would also cut the number of mistakes on the form and the problems arising thereafter. |
Free books, school bags given to poor, disabled students
Haridwar, December 6 Alongside a medical camp was also organised for these students where their health check-up was done and medicines were given free of cost. This was done under the aegis of Cavinkare situated in Roshanabad as part of its social efforts to contribute to the society. Informing about the freebies given to the poor children, Chairman of the school Rajeev Tumbadiya said the school had more than a 100 odd students who were unable to even meet their school fees. So such aids helped these children carry out their education. Notably Uttaranchal Public School provides free of cost education to the poor, weak and handicapped students at Dheerawali, Jwalapur, in Haridwar and has been functioning for the past decade. Cavinkare executives also inspected the facilities and infrastructure of the school assuring of further help in upgrading the social school’s educational setup. DAV students participate in blood donation
Dehradun, December 6 A large number of students participated in the camp organised by college students union. The camp aimed at creating awareness among students to donate blood. Speaking on the occasion, Anshul Chawla, president of the student council, said donating blood was a noble cause to give life. Several students of the college, along with many cops deployed on the campus, also donated blood. They were medically examined first by the doctors and accordingly made to donate blood. |
Flood-affected get relief
Haridwar,
December 6 Under the supervision of sub-divisional magistrates, the relief is being distributed as per loss assessment done by the administrative teams. Public representatives have also been included in the distribution teams to make sure that the process is fair and the allocation completed as early as possible. The allocation team includes village development officers, kanungos, additional tehsildar, nayab tehsildar, lekhpals and other revenue officers. The District Magistrate has also directed the SDMs that any discrepancy found in the allocation process has to be resolved on priority basis, as further delay in reaching out to the flood-affected people will aggravate the problem. |
125 blankets handed over to Governor

Mohammed Kaif gives tips to budding cricketers
Dehradun, December 6 He was in the city on an invitation by the Navyuvak Sangh Cricket Academy to share his experiences in the field of cricket and to motivate the budding cricketers. It was in the afternoon at Nehru Stadium where he met the local cricketers and had a cadid interaction with the teams. On his arrival he was greeted by the organisers and Minister for Tourism Madan Kaushik. Kaif was surrounded by the public which made him leave the stadium within a short period. It has been learnt that the organisers had not done much of security arrangements to avoid the huge crowd. Kaif also visited the College of Engineering where he interacted with students and and gave away College Cricket Trophy to winning team captain Abhishek Pratap. Pratap and his team were excited over receiving the trophy from Kaif and asked him to share best of his tips as a token of his visit to them. Rao Academy down Mussoorie Association
Dehradun, December 6 Mussoorie Cricket Association scored 127 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs. Sanjeev (25), Pravesh (22) and Sagar (19) mainly scored in setting up a fighting total for Mussoorie. Pramod and Sachin got two wickets each while Sanjay, Shankar and Ashwani took a wicket each for Rao Academy. In reply, Rao Academy achieved the target in 18.4 overs losing eight wickets. Muzzfarnagar. He was also a cricketer and member of Ajabpur Youngstar. This tournament is held in his memory. District-level tournaments have been held in his memory twice earlier. Addressing a press conference, Anil
Dobhal, president of the club, said a total of 16 teams from across India would take part in this tournament. The teams include MCI, New Delhi,
DCA, Bareilly, Kishanganj Zymkhana, Delhi, Malik Sports, Delhi, Chandigarh,
Merath, Cricket Club, Muzzfarnagar, Sharanpur, Haldwani Cricket Club, Uttarakhand Police, Tanush Cricket Academy, Punjab Cricket Association, Doon Combined and Doon Tiger. All matches will be played on a knockout basis and every match will be of 35
overs. The semifinals and the final will be of 40 overs. Ranji and IPL-level players are expected to take part in the tournament. Devender Sati, club member, said Rs 10,000 is the entry fee for each team and the winning and runners-up teams will be awarded. As per Sati, their club on the day of the opening of the tournament will also honour state agitationists from the district. |

The winners will qualify for South Asian Games-2010 to be organised at The Doon ice skating rink and Maharana Pratap Sports College, Raipur, Dehradun.
