Preservation of city’s architectural heritage
Admn to finalise action plan

The Chandigarh Administration is set to finalise its action plan for the preservation of its architectural heritage. An important meeting to finalise the blueprint prepared by expert groups on the preservation of heritage is scheduled to be held under the chairmanship of UT Administrator Shivraj Patil on December 15.

Residents of Sector 18 and 19 have been consuming contaminated muddy water for the past five days. This shows the callous attitude of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, which has failed to even visit the spot despite claims of having spent crores of rupees on improving filtration of water.

Finally, 69 security gates to be put up in Mohali

The municipal council has decided to install as many as 69 security gates in various areas of the town after it approves a sample gate in Sector 70 in a day or two. All the 39 gates put up about a year ago will now be replaced with new ones.

Streetlights non-functional in southern sectors

A road in a dilapidated condition; and (right) streetlight poles without bulbs in Sector 55, Chandigarh, near the Mohali barrier. These days, southern sectors of the city are engulfed in total darkness due to non-functioning of streetlights. Interestingly area councillor Manjit Singh Chauhan in a number of house meetings had raised the issue but the authorities said that no one had ever complained about the problem in the area.

Heavy landslides have pushed the process of setting up the Pinjore-Parwanoo bypass behind schedule. Delay in handing over a chunk of land, too, has contributed to the slowdown, the Punjab and Haryana High Court heard today.

Man arrested for possessing snake

The Chandigarh Police arrested a person for possessing a snake today. The accused Gian Chand, a resident of Karbala Bedi village, Uttar Pradesh, was nabbed from Motor Market, Mani Majra, here on the complaint of Rajinder Singh, Forest Guard, World Life Squad Office of Deputy Conservator of Forest, Chandigarh.

War widow claims denial of plot

The widow of a war hero today alleged that she had been denied a plot against the Gallantry Award category in the Aerocity. Amarjit Kaur, widow of Lt Col Daljit Singh, resident of Barnala, said despite being successful in the draw of lots for 500 sq yard she was denied the benefit.

‘Law, order going haywire in city’

Jai Ram Joshi, a former president of the local unit of the BJP has expressed his concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the city. In a press note issued here today he said that the incidents of snatching, robberies, thefts, murders had become order of the day in the city and its surrounding areas.

RLA clears backlog of files

In accordance with the UT administration’s directives the Registering & Licensing Authority has cleared the backlog of nearly 5,000 cases in all its offices. This follows a report recently carried by the Chandigarh Tribune highlighting the harassment faced by the public due to pending files.

Jet Airways slashes fare for armed forces
Chandigarh, November 29 Jet Airways has announced a 50 per cent discount on fares for the Indian armed forces and paramilitary personnel with immediate effect. A press note issued here today said that the discount would also be available for retired defence and paramilitary personnel, and their families.

80-year-old struggles for his land

An 80-year-old man is struggling for his land. Acting on his complaint, the Zirakpur police arrested two persons after registering a case in February. However, he is yet to get his land back.

In a bid to standardise its Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme introduced last year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) would now use a special software solution to collect and analyse all data related to it.

The second convocation of PTU’s Gian Jyoti School of TQM and Entrepreneurship was held here recently. Around 260 BTech students were conferred degrees, while 196 received diplomas.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, in its latest notification has extended the last date for submission of forms and fee for the candidates appearing under compartment, improvement and additional subject categories for March 2010 examinations to December 15.

‘Harmony in Nature’ enthrals audience

Riverside DAV Public School today organised its annual day function, in which DR Yadav, former joint secretary, CBSE, Panchkula, was the chief guest. The students mesmerised audience with their enthralling performances on the occasion. The programme began with the display of skating, aerobics and gymnastics, which were executed with total perfection and left the audience spellbound. The kaleidoscope of the celebration started with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the principal, which was followed by Ganpati Vandana. Shivani Sareen read out the school annual report and further added that the school had always made an effort to enlighten its children towards protecting and preserving environment.

Ten students of Rayat-Bahra group secured meritorious positions in the merit list of Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. Results: Aayush Sharma stood first in the university ECE IV semester, Gurpreet Singh stood first in university ME IV semester, Harinderbir Kaur stood first in university BME IV semester and Paavni Sharma stood first in the university BME IV semester.

Navreet Kaur of Pheelkhana School bagged the first prize in the inter-school declamation contest organised by Atma Ram Kumar Sabha Higher Secondary School, here recently. Maintenance for spouse despite detention: HC
Chandigarh, November 29
Prison won’t bar your spouse from getting maintenance, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear. The ruling came on a petition filed by Gurjant Singh against his wife, Lovepreet Kaur. He claimed that his wife was undergoing sentence in a murder case. As her needs were being taken care of by the state, he was not required to pay maintenance.

Court orders to stop PRTC perks of officers
Chandigarh, November 29
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed that the managing director and other Class I officers of PEPSU Road Transport Corporation would not be paid travelling and daily allowance, along with petrol expenses, till post retirement benefits of the 818 PRTC retirees were not cleared.

The Mohali police has busted a gang of robbers, who were active in Mohali and Chandigarh. Two members of the gang, Umesh and Tony, told the cops that they were involved in snatchings, robberies and thefts.

Heroes welcome to silver medallist Abhijit
Chandigarh, November 29
Budding golfers of the CGA admire the medal of Asiad silver medallist Abhijit Chadha in Chandigarh on Monday. Abhijit Chadha is back with a silver medal. The 19-year-old city golfer was part of the India quartet that won the team silver medal at the Guangzhao Asian Games in China. Abhijit was among the three best scorers on the second and third day of the golf squad. In the team event, the three best scores were counted on each of the four days to determine the winning team.

RSB clinch civil services cricket title
Panchkula, November 29
The Regional Sports Board (RSB), Chandigarh, clinched the All-India Civil Services Cricket Tournament defeating Central Civil Secretariat, New Delhi, by six wickets in the final held at Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium here today. Put in to bat first, Central Civil Secretariat, New Delhi, were bundled out on just 64 runs in 14 overs. Madan Lal broke the backbone of the rivals with his clinical bowling.
