Infiltration bid foiled in poonch
Jammu, November 14 A senior Army officer said troops of the 5 Maratha Light Infantry (MLI) noticed suspicious movement between the Anand and Gian forward defence posts in the Mankote sub-sector of Poonch district early today. During a search operation, they found a group of militants trying to sneak into the Indian side and challenged them, he said, adding the militants fired at the troops, who returned the fire, leading to a fierce gunbattle. When the firing stopped, the troops discovered the bodies of two militants along with two AK-47 rifles, jackets, AK magazines and some other ammunition from the forest. Manmohan Singh, SSP, Poonch, said: “ It seems there was a group of militants as the firing continued for nearly three hours. So far, we have found the bodies of two militants, who probably belonged to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).” The identity of the slain militants was yet to be established. Asked whether any identity card or any other documents linking the two militants to the LeT had been recovered, the SSP replied: “Mostly the LeT pushes its militants from this side. So, it is possible that the slain militants belonged to the outfit ”. Giving reasons behind the recent increase in infiltration bids, the officer said: “ Dense jungles and the location of our forward posts in the low-lying areas give an advantage to Pakistan troops”. Troops along the LoC have been alerted in view of reports that there will be more such intrusion attempts along the LoC. It is pertinent to mention here that even though the Army and police have devised a number of strategies to foil such misadventures, the Krishna Ghati (KG) sector in the Jammu region continues to be a vulnerable spot. |
