Multiple tractor-trailers a safety hazard
Rohtak, November 14 Two persons riding a two-wheeler were recently injured seriously when they were reportedly trying to overtake a tractor with three trailers on a narrow road, claimed Deepak of Kharkara village. “The violation becomes more common during the harvesting season when farmers or agents, who purchase crops, use tractor-trailers to carry crop to the market or the godown and nearly all roads leading to mandis are occupied by such vehicles,” claimed Virender, a local resident. Four persons, including two officials of the district administration, died in a road accident near Meham here recently because of a tractor-trailer. The police had not been keeping any check on the violation of traffic rules by drivers of heavy vehicles, he added. The movement of such vehicles should not be allowed at least during the day. Alleging misuse of the machinery, he said tractor-trailers were even being used for commercial
activities. Transportation of goods like building material was being done openly in violations of the norms. The plying of tractors with more than one trailer had become a common sight, but no action had been taken so far, said an official of the local administration. |
Sewage plant on MC land
Samalkha (Panipat), November 14 The construction of the treatment plant is likely to start in a couple of months as the Public Health Department, which is to execute the project, has already written to the local municipal council for transfer of the land. The treatment plant, which will be constructed on 4 acres near the local gaushala, will have a capacity to treat 5 million litres of water a day (MLD). Earlier, the state government had initiated the process to acquire the agricultural land near the Nestle plant to set up the treatment plant. However, the farmers moved the High Court, on directions of which it was later decided to set up the plant on land
that belonged to the local civic body. The High Court in a verdict pronounced in June, had observed that the state had issued a notification under Section 4 read with Section 17(2) (C) of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, on November 16, 2006, and later made a declaration on December 28, 2006, under Section 6 read with Section 17 (1). However, the Chief Minister did not deem it appropriate to set up the plant inside the populated area, as is evident from the letter dated January 4, 2008. Later, on April 8, 2008, another notification brought an end to the acquisition of the specified land. On May 9, 2008, again a notification was issued to acquire 48 kanals and 8 marlas. However, the High Court ruled in favour of the farmers, whose land was to be acquired and quashed all notifications. Sources in the Public Health Department stated that the new place selected for the project would help the department save Rs 50 lakh, which was otherwise required to set up the plant near the Nestle factory. The department is now hopeful that the construction of the plant would begin in next six months and would be completed by the next year. |
Ginners lose crores as cotton prices dip
Sirsa, November 14 The prices had started falling as the market opened on Thursday and the maximum price offered was Rs 4,825 per quintal. As a corollary, prices of lint cotton that had risen from Rs 3,670 per mound (37.5kg) in the first week of October to Rs 4,060 (October end) and up to Rs 4,620 on Wednesday came down to Rs 4,325 per mound
on Friday. The prices of lint cotton also started falling since Thursday, when it came down to Rs 4,450 from Rs 4,620, a day before. “This is a worldwide phenomenon that started from China, the largest producer and consumer of cotton,” said Sanjiv Dutt, director, North India Cotton Industries Association. Dutt said in India too, the hiked prices were not real, but was the result of some hoarding as well as panic buying by exporters, who have to honour their commitments by December 15, 2010. “China’s economic planner recently had asked governments in cotton-producing areas of that country to step up their oversight of the market and probe into the dissemination of information regarding cotton price rises, hoarding and other activity that would artificially raise prices,” Dutt said, citing a report on the website quoting China’s official Xinhua News Agency. He claimed that the high demand and expectations of a severe shortage of
supply had kept cotton futures prices at record highs, but the bubble in prices was waiting to burst. Meanwhile, due to the unprecedented rise in the prices of cotton in the past 45 days, a majority of forward trades in the country have crashed with sellers failing to honour their commitments. Sources said of the forward in the country, commitments for 3 lakh bales have been honoured so far. |

I am still in a state of disbelief,” she said. It was only after reaching Rahul Gandhi’s residence that she learnt that Parkash Kaur, Suman Bala and another woman Zila Parishad member from Mahendragarh had also been invited. “We were made to fill some forms that sought our names, ward numbers, districts, 3 problems of the ward and some other information,” said Parkash Kaur. “I stressed on the need for schools and primary health centres for every village and the need to step up development in my area,” she said. “When I told Rahul Gandhi that the constituency I represented was ‘Inailo’ he looked puzzled. I then told that it was the name for Indian National Lok Dal (INLD),” said Mamta, who won the civic elections from Ratia, which is represented in the assembly by Gian Chand Odh of the INLD. Bowled over by the charm of the young AICC general secretary, Mamta said Rahul Gandhi “showed interest in the minutest details.
