Abohar
TSU to go on strike today:
The Technical Services Union (TSU) has given a call for strike on November 10 and 11 to express resentment over the failure of the Powercom authorities in implementing the agreement that had been reached during a high-level meeting with senior functionaries of the joint front. The TSU workers staged a dharna at the sub-divisional offices of the Powercom here and shouted slogans against the management. Their demands included payment of arrears besides other facilities.

Declamation contest: Madhu of Maya Devi Memorial School and Amandeep Kaur of Government Senior Secondary School (Kerakhera) won the first and second prize respectively in the declamation contest that was organised by the Teachers Club as part of Children’s Day celebrations at the Government Senior Secondary School at village Dangarkhera near here. Club president Amrik Singh presided over the function. Programme coordinator DK Chaitley informed on Tuesday that Radhey Shyam of village Kerakhera and Virender Singh of Killianwali village got top positions in the contest for physically disabled children. Sanjeev Gilhotra, Vijyant Juneja and Rakesh Raheja formed the panel of judges.

Nagar kirtan: Nagar Kirtan would be held by the Osho Club today during the bhajan sandhya programme here, Tony Sandhu and Sanjeev Gandhi informed. Maa Dhyan Abha would address the gathering at Arorvansh Dharamshala. Prominent folk singer Hakam Sufi and Om Dutt would enthrall the audience.

Counselling camp: Block-level mass counselling camp was held jointly by the district employment and training and education departments at the Government Senior Secondary School for Girls at village Panjkosi, principal Rajesh Dhuria informed. Branch manager, PNB, VK Guglaney, employment official Sukhjit Singh Gill, Mehal Singh, deputy director Ex-Servicemen Welfare Board, Rajinder Kataria, deputy director fish farming, instructors Madan Lal, Harjot Singh, Avtar Singh and Naib Tehsildar Baljinder Singh Sandhu spoke on the occasion.

Cyprus team visits Moga:
A team from the University of Nicosia (Cyprus) visited Desh Bhagat Institute of Engineering and Mangement in Moga. The visiting team discussed various programmes such as training programme and education trip. They plan to open their campus in the institute. Michalis Psoltis, their representative, was welcomed by the institute’s director Davinderpal Singh, Dawanpreet Kaur, Pawandeep Chahal, Heena, Satvir Singh and Manjeet Singh.

Man hangs himself to death:
A middle-aged man, Surinder Singh, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in the Basti Gujan locality here on today. While the cause of suicide is yet not clear, according to statements given by his wife Kiran Bala and brother to the police, he was a drug addict. This was his second marriage. He had four children. While he was a rickshaw-puller, his wife works as domestic help. The police has initiated inquest proceedings under section 174 of Cr.PC. The body has been handed over to his family members after autopsy.

4 police vehicles flagged off:
SSP Narinder Bhargav flagged off as many as four vehicles equipped with ultra modern facilities for as many as four police stations - Rahon, Kathgarh, Mukandpur and Behram, here on Monday. The vehicles would be connected with the police control room and would help in improving the functioning of the police department.

Man dies in accident: While Amarnath Mittal, resident of Zirakpur, was killed, his son Shabnam and his friend Deepak Garg were injured when their car was hit by a tourist bus near Nai Mazara village on the Nawanshahr-Chandigarh road here at about 12.30 am on Tuesday. The victims were returning from Jalandhar after attending a marriage ceremony and when they reached near Nai Mazara village, the tourist bus, reportedly trying to save a bull lying on the road, hit the car. The bus driver absconded.

Red Ribbon Express: Students of the Doaba Group of Colleges, Chhokeran, visited the Red Ribbon Express here on Tuesday. Besides attending the training sessions, the students also donated blood on the occasion, Dr Daljit Singh, Director of the group, said.

Sonker is vice-chief of block BJP:
Local trader Inderjit Sonkar has been appointed vice-president of the Block BJP, Phagwara. This was announced here by Sunil Madan, press secretary of the party in a press release here today. He said block president Arun Khosla has also appointed Arun Sudhir as secretary of the party.

Extension lecture on maths: The Department of Mathematics of the Kamla Nehru College for women organised an extension lecture on “Uses of mathematics in real life”. Dr Shelly Arora, assistant professor in mathematics, Punjabi University, Patiala, was the key speaker. Delivering the lecture about the uses of mathematics in different sectors like banking, finance, medicine and economics, etc., Dr Shelly Arora said, “Before the mathematics rules people used barter system. But this system could not continue longer when need of humans increased”. On this occasion Prof Manjit Singh of Mathematic Department said that all the mathematics terms were based on counting and as all businesses used counting, there was no concept of business without mathematics.
