Tension as farmer’s condition worsens
Rajpura, November 9
Tension mounted as the condition of one of the three farmers sitting on a hunger strike in front of the residence of local MLA deteriorated here tonight.Farmers have been protesting against the setting up of an Information-Technology and Knowledge Park on 1,369 acres of agricultural land of six villages — Sehra, Sehri, Aakar, Aakri, Pabra and Takhtumajra.

Now, PSEB joint secy’s appointment under scanner

A day after the removal of Sukhwinder Kaur Saroya from the post of Controller of Examination of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), the appointment of a joint secretary in the board has now come under the scanner. At the last meeting of board members of the PSEB, during which the issue of the Controller of Examination was raised, the criterion adopted by the board while promoting an assistant secretary as joint secretary was questioned.
Proposal to double MC councillors’ honorarium

Six years after their last pay revision, the Chandigarh municipal corporation councillors have proposed doubling of their monthly honorarium with an across-the-board Rs 5,000 hike. The proposal envisages all councillors being paid Rs 10,000, up 100 per cent from the current monthly honorarium of Rs 5,000.
Arrest of four for robberies

Jails in Burail and Patiala provided platform to dacoits, who were arrested while allegedly planning to rob a chemist shop in the city on Sunday night, to form a gang.Sources in the crime branch said the accused during interrogation said they had come in contact with each other in Burail and Patiala jails.
Marital discord cases on the rise

The number of matrimonial disputes has been steadily increasing in this district with unions arranged through the Net accounting for most of them. According to data available, 293 cases of discord were reported till October 31, 2010 as compared to 312 cases in 2009 in the women’s cell of the local police

In a desperate bid to retain its sliding base of landline subscribers and make its services “competitive” to the low tariff being offered by mobile companies, state-owned telecom company BSNL is set to implement a new billing system, call detail record (CDR), that will enable it to offer cheaper rates on usage on per second basis.

ABVP protests against commercialisation of education
