Dhanteras: The right day to buy metal ware
Dehradun, November 2 Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day Divali festival. Falling on the thirteen day of the Krishna paksha in the month of Ashwin, it signifies wealth. On this day, people purchase metals and other precious items. Utensil traders, jewellers and dealers in electrical home appliances are expected to do brisk business tomorrow. The purchase of steel utensils is considered auspicious on Dhanteras. Kumar Bartan Bhandar, one of the oldest shops dealing in utensils, crockery and gift items, has got some of the finest quality brands. Along with known brands such as Prestige, Futura, Hawkins, Cello and Milton, this year’s additions are matt-finish steel items by De-Stellar, a known brand from Chennai, and Shakun, another famous brand in steel accessories. Starting from a mere Rs 10, there are items worth Rs 10,000. “We will open our shop early tomorrow. From spoons to cookers, we have high-end non-stick cookware as well as Indian and import-quality cutlery from Spain, Korea, Japan. We also have gold-plated crockery,” asserted Prakash Kumar, the owner. High-end crockery and cutlery of crystal ware by the brand name of Cristal Darques is another hit with the people. “I have many types of crockery items at home, but I am planning to buy a crystal dinner set this Divali. It is very fragile and needs a lot of maintenance, but its elegance makes it worth owning,” said Krishna Rathi, a housewife. “Idols of 24 carat hallmark gold of Lakshmi-Ganesh and silver coins are the next common things that witness great sales on the festival after utensils. Some persons also prefer purchasing silver glasses and spoons,” said Daljit Pal of Pal Jewellers at Dispensary Road. However, with Asmi, Nakshatra, D’damas, Gilli, there also branded silver items by MMTC and Sanchi, trusted silverware from the government of India. “For the past week, people are thronging our shop. These silver items are high in quality. From small silver items worth Rs 500, we have dinner sets that are worth Rs 4 lakh weighing around 12 kg,” said a salesgirl at Punjab Jewel. |
600 cars to hit city roads today
Dehradun, November 2 Local car dealers confirmed that there has been a rise in the car sales this year as compared to last year. “We have bookings to deliver over 30 cars on Wednesday,” said Divine Honda Sales manager Sunil Kala. “We expect the sale of 70 cars this year,” he added. “We usually sell about 40 to 45 cars a month. Selling more than 30 cars on a single day is certainly exciting business.” Maruti Suzuki dealers too are having great business this Diwali season. The three dealers of Maruti Suzuki in the state capital are said to have booked over 400 cars for the auspicious day that falls on Wednesday. “Last year, Maruti sales were comparatively less - at around 200 cars on Dhanteras. But this year, the booking has crossed 350 with the figure expected to touch 400 on Wednesday,” said Gaurav Arora, DGM, Dee Dee Motors. “On an average, we sell around 200 cars every month,” he stated. Talking to The Tribune, Rakesh Oberai, MD, Oberai Motors, said, “Over 36 cars will be delivered tomorrow. Nano accounts for 14 of these. “From today, customers can straight away walk out of our showroom with brand new Nano for which they otherwise had to wait for months,” he said. People here are also crazy about the costliest cars in the country i.e. Volkswagen. “About 12 persons want the car on Dhanteras, but otherwise, 19 cars will be delivered in all on the auspicious day. Customers had to wait for more than three to four months for the car, so they do not mind taking it on other days as well,” Praveen Kumar Gaur, Senior Sales Manager at Volkswagen, Dehradun, said. Gurpreet Singh, Manager Sales of AB Motors that deals in Ford, said that they would be delivering about 40 cars on Wednesday. “The response is overwhelming. We expect the sales to go up to 50,” he stated. A Chevrolet dealer said, “If we go by the booking figures, we hope to sell around 50 cars in the city.” The sales manager of Grand Toyota refused to disclose the details as he said, “It is against company rules. We cannot declare the numbers.” |
Crowd is up, so is crime
Dehradun, November 2 Reason: With the onset of the festive season, criminal activities have got active in the overcrowded city’s main market, the Paltan
Bazar. Threat of pickpocketing and chain snatching, besides small thefts, becomes common in such crowded places. The situation at the markets also leads to the problem of eve-teasing and misbehaviour with
women.
Yesterday only, a woman’s purse, containing Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 and an ATM card, reportedly went missing when she was shopping in the Paltan
Bazar. Her husband Kalam Singh, a resident of Canal Road, complained to the police today. The woman, due to the crowd, that is bustling at the seams, didn’t even know when her purse was stolen. Much later, she realized that she had lost her purse. Last week, three women from Andhra Pradesh, acting as customers, were caught stealing ornaments from a jewellery shop in the Paltan Bazar. They were nabbed with help of the CCTV cameras installed in the shop. Not only this, but some small-time fadhiwalas also indulge in criminal activities like petty thefts. Owing to illegal encroachments and big number of small-time road vendors, it becomes difficult for cops to do verification of all of them. Thus, most of such sellers in the guise of selling make hay. Though the police and intelligence will be on duty in such places, considering the crowd in such narrow roads and lanes, it is always a complex thing for the cops to catch hold of anti-social elements. “The public has to be vigilant and should inform the police if it faces some problem. However, on our part at every junction cops have been deployed and patrolling has been intensified,” acting Superintendent of Police Ajay Joshi told The Tribune. |

Cultural-musical contest kicks off at Jwalapur College
Haridwar, November 2 Alongside the state-level athletics meet being held at the BHEL main stadium in Haridwar, a cultural-musical competition is also being organised at Jwalapur Inter College. The cultural competition began today with students taking part in various cultural events. So from local Garhwali-Kumaoni, kathak, Bharatnatyam, western style dances to vocal, instrumental, antakshri contests, students from all over the state showcased their talent enlivening the atmosphere at the school auditorium and campus. The Uddham Singh Nagar team also clinched the first prize in the group song, drama and debate competition. The Dehradun team emerged winners in the physical exercise contest. In the traditional category, teams from hill districts with beautifully attired in Garhwali-Kumaoni regional outfits and singing local traditional songs and jagars were the dominant ones. Other districts too like Tehri Garhwal, Almora, Bageshwar, Pitthorgarh, Nainital, Dehradun, Haridwar, Champawat, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Uddham Singh Nagar too gave top performances making it quite tough for judges to adjudge winners in almost every category. Govt school lacks basic amenities
Mussoorie, November 2 The school situated at Silla village, 30 km from Mussoorie, has more than 124 students, out of which 64 students are studying under the campaign. Most of the students belong to the deprived section, as it is a Dalit-dominated area. They travel around 50 km every day to reach the school. Apart from this, they don’t have syllabus books and are forced to complete their recently conducted half-yearly exams without books. Savita (name changed), student of Class VII, said she belonged to a poor family and had not received books till now, thus facing immense difficulty during exams. According to Headmaster of the school Lalit Mohan Kala, he was posted at the school in July and found that books that should have been distributed by the state government free of cost in April when the session began had not received yet. Kala sent a letter addressed to the Education Officers and the Education Directorate in August clearly stating that students of Class VI and VII had not received the syllabus books till now. Kala said he got a letter from the Education Directorate, but no action had been initiated till now. Kala also feared that in November students and teachers both would face immense difficulty in the school because the building was leaking at several places. MLA Jot Singh Gunsola said the government of India under the SSA was doing a lot and had provided basic amenities to the school. He said he would inspect the school and find out the reason as to why the school had been neglected up till now. He said this was a serious issue and, if needed, he would raise the issue in the next Vidhan Sabha session. The District Education Officer was not available on the phone. |

Kaushal has asked the officials to ensure that the examinations are conducted in a peaceful and conducive atmosphere. The district has taken a lead in preparing for the examinations.
