Farmers association chief lashes out at SAD-led govt
‘Worst-ever paddy procurement process in the state’
Rajay Deep/TNS

Bathinda, October 25
“It has become a phenomenon that whenever Akalis come to power, the farmers in the state have to face harassment in selling their crops,” alleged the state president of the Indian Farmers Association (IFA), Satnam Singh Behru here today.

Lashing out at the state government, he claimed, “The worst ever paddy procurement process in the state this time will dethrone the Badal-led state government in the coming assembly polls.”

“To make the government feel ashamed of its deeds at the national level, we are going to release a farmers’ resentment pamphlet on November 9 outside Parliament in Delhi,” he disclosed.

Behru said, “To our surprise, conducting a statewide survey of the mandis, we observed that farmers are being looted at the hands of corrupt officials of the Mandi Board and procurement agencies, who have some links with commission agents and rice millers.”

“We are soon going to expose a scandal in the state in the name of purchase of PUSA 44 and Hybrid 6129 varieties of paddy. If a farmers wants to sell any of the two varieties, he will have to shell out a bribe Rs 30-Rs 70 per quintal out of the fixed MSP of Rs 1030 per quintal to the purchase officials,” alleged Behru.

About the basis of his allegations, Behru said, “I am well equipped with all required documents to prove my charge. I wish that after reading it in the newspapers, CM Sahib gets the matter examined through independent agencies and challenges any of my statements. Then I will produce everything in black and white before the media.”

“After the media highlighted the factual position of mandis, the chief minister claimed to have deputed his principal secretary to monitor and speed up the process but failed in bringing the situation under control,” alleged Behru.

Speaking further, he said, “As we all know, that farmers are the vote bank of the SAD-led government but the policies of this government (apparently to please the election fund donors—big rice millers and Arhatyas), have exploited the farmers to such an extent that they are now remembering the previous Congress regime and are campaigning to weed out the Akalis to save the agriculture of the state.”

Terming the hike of Rs 20 in the wheat MSP a cruel joke with farmers, Behru said, “We are planning to move the Supreme Court to get the report of the Swaminathan commission implemented in letter and spirit,” he disclosed.

Abohar, October 25
The campaign launched by district health authorities to curb the activities of those making spurious eatables yielded positive results when one of its team managed to unearth two factories involved in manufacturing spurious 'desi ghee' and seized eight quintals of spurious Patisa sweet in this town and its surrounding areas.

The team of district health authorities being supervised by Kanwarjit Singh Kakkar, civil surgeon and YK Gupta, district health officer (DHO), also took samples of six sweet makers, four from Fazilka and two from Abohar town, to check adulteration.

Kakkar said the first spurious desi ghee manufacturing unit was unearthed on Seetoguno road and about one quintal of such ghee was seized. The owner of the factory had claimed that he had been indulging in these activities for the past over two months.

Moga, October 25
The animal husbandry department has geared up to prevent the spread of brucellosis disease among the cattle in Moga district. Although, the disease, commonly known as 'contagious abortion' and 'bangs disease' is not being viewed as a major threat at the moment but keeping in view the past experiences, the department has kept ready a stock of as much as one lakh dose of the vaccine to control the spread of the disease in the district.

Talking to The Tribune, Dr PC Mittal, deputy director of the animal husbandry department revealed that the department would provide the vaccine dose free of cost to the farmers. He said the testing facility for the disease was also now available in Moga district. Earlier, the test to detect this disease was conducted at the regional laboratory of the department at Jalandhar, he said.

Adding that the department has enough antigens available here to conduct the tests for detecting the disease, he appealed to the farmers to contact the nearest government veterinary officer if their cow or buffalo repeatedly aborts the foetus after pregnancy.

"The brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by gram negative facultative intra-cellular bacterial organisms of the genus brucella that are pathogenic for a wide variety of animals and human beings. The disease is manifested by reproductive failure which includes abortion, birth of unthrifty calves and retained placenta in female animals," Dr Mittal said. It spreads from the vaginal discharge of an infected cow/buffalo or from an aborted foetus. The infected breeding bulls could transmit the disease to cows at the time of service by infected semen. Milk produced front an infected cow may also transmit the organism to the human beings. The infected milk creates a public health hazard as the organism causes undulant fever in humans and could also lead to impotency.

Dr Mittal further said that there was no effective way to detect infected animals by symptoms of brucellosis. "The most obvious signs in pregnant animals are abortion or birth of weak calves. Milk production may be reduced from changes in the normal lactation period. This is caused by abortions and delayed conceptions," he said.
