The citywide surveys conducted at premises of prominent business houses by the income tax department yesterday, have led to "voluntary surrenders" of unaccounted income to the tune of a whopping Rs 6.75 crore.

Red Ribbon Express, the HIV/AIDS awareness train, reached Chandigarh today. The train, consisting of eight coaches, will be open to visitors from 9 am to 6 pm till October 16. Pradip Mehra, Adviser to the Administrator, took a tour of the train and said the HIV/AIDS epidemic was a formidable challenge to development and social progress. He urged the public to visit Red Ribbon Express.

Students protest against irregular bus services
Colleges students of Barwala protest at the ISBT, Sector 5, Panchkula, on Wednesday Panchkula, October 13
Irked over irregular bus services, students from five colleges of the district protested in front of the Inter-state Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Sector 5 here this morning. The students raised slogans against the Haryana Roadways officials and alleged that due to poor bus service to their colleges situated on the Panchkula-Barwala route, they always reached late to their classes.

PGI’s contractual staff protest for pay

Hundreds of PGI contractual employees protesting over delay in salaries held a rally at Sector 25 here today. It was the third consecutive month that these workers protested to get their monthly dues.

A total knee replacement surgery will now take just 15 minutes, as, for the first time in Asia, made-to-order artificial knees will be available in the country. This has been claimed by Dr Manuj Wadhwa, director, Department of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Fortis Hospital, Mohali.

Ensuring that organs are donated after one’s death is the noblest act a person can do as it will help save a number of lives. This was stated by Dr Anuradha Jatana of the PGI while addressing at least 50 members of Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik and their spouses last evening.

In a poor showing, a six-member squad, formed by the Mohali municipal council to catch stray animals, averaged under one catch per day in a period ranging over 16 months. The civic body was able to catch just 426 animals over 502 days and impose a fine of Rs 1,47,700.

Final 454 applicants make it to Aerocity

Computer glitch bugs sales tax payers
Zirakpur, October 13
Truck operators hold a protest at the sales tax barrier on the Zirakpur-Chandigarh highway on Wednesday A number of truck drivers, who came to deposit sales tax at the Zirakpur sales tax barrier, faced inconvenience, as the computers stopped functioning here this afternoon.
Due to the delay truck drivers started protesting against the sales tax officials. Truck drivers alleged that they were standing in long queues for over three hours and failed to deposit the sales tax because of non-functioning of computers.

Man caught stealing from car

A resident of Sector 15 was allegedly caught red-handed while stealing articles from a car parked at the PGI here yesterday.
Kamal Kumar of Yamunanagar reported to the police that Ansul Goyal of Sector 15 was caught red-handed stealing his bag, containing Rs 8,500 and some documents, from his car (HR05Z-0347).

35-yr-old motorcyclist killed in accident
Chandigarh, October 13
A 35-year-old man was killed after he rammed his motorcycle into a tree on the road separating Sectors 37 and 38 here late last night.
Meanwhile, two persons, including a 13-year-old schoolboy, were injured in separate road accidents in the city in the past 24 hours.

College student dies
Panchkula, October 13
A 19-year-old boy, who was taken to the Sector-6 General Hospital in an unconscious state, was declared brought dead by the doctor here this morning. The deceased has been identified as Abhishek Bhatia, a native of Shimla and a student of Swami Devi Dayal College of Engineering and Technology, Mouli, near Barwala.

The police yesterday arrested one person with 5 kg opium from a resident of Guwahati.

Company director arrested for excise duty evasion

The Chandigarh (I) Commissionerate of Central Excise Department has arrested a director of Iron and Steel Company in Mandi Gobindgarh for allegedly evading payment of Central Excise duty of Rs 2.9 crore. This is the first ever arrest made by the department for such a violation in the region.

The other winners in the section were Shriya Kalia (HP), Tanysha Dussabje and Sarah Dev, who beat their respective opponents in today’s matches.
